Alderman Ian Luder, Lord Mayor of London in 2008-9, has been elected foreman of the Guildable Manor of Southwark.
He succeeds former BBC International Mastermind champion Leslie Grout.
The installation on Wednesday afternoon was immediately followed by a sitting of the Guildable Manor court leet at St George the Martyr Church in Borough High Street.
This was the first time that court of Guildable Manor, covering the Borough Market area, has been convened at the church.
But it was the last to be presided over by Southwark High Steward Brian Barker who retires next spring as Recorder of London.
The jurors presented the retiring High Steward with a copy of Southwark and the City by David Johnson.
Judge Nicholas Hilliard, who has been appointed the next Recorder of London, is expected to be confirmed as High Steward shortly before Easter.
Since 1804 it has been the convention for the Recorder to also take on the role of Southwark's High Steward at the invitation of the City of London's Aldermanic Court.
In 2003 Judge Hilliard, at present Common Serjeant of London, was prosecuting barrister in the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? coughing major trial at Southwark Crown Court.

Editor's Note: This is part of a monthly series of stories by the Community History Writers, a group of area individuals committed to documenting and writing about local history and the people, places and happenings that created the various communities within Morgan County. This volunteer group first came together to create, "Morgan County: A Land of Immigrants," a booklet detailing the area's immigration history; copies are available at Fort Morgan Library & Museum, among other places.
A unique two-story sod house once stood on the Eastern Plains of Colorado southwest of Orchard, not far from the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. And as long as it stood there, it served as a monument to the early pioneers' imagination, their industriousness and their ability to adjust and to innovate.
This two-story sod house used to stand near Orchard in Morgan County. It is shown in 1983. (Thelma Downing / Special to the Times)
The utility of, or the need for, the early sod houses is closely linked to the Homestead Era, as it played out to open and settle the American West.
Beginning in 1862 by virtue of a series of Homestead Acts, a citizen could become the owner of a tract of federal land by obtaining and "proving up" on a Homestead Application.
One of the several legal requisites of "proving up" and obtaining title was the requirement that a habitable house be built on the land.
Persons interested in Homesteading had to first file their intentions at the nearest Land Office. A brief check for previous ownership claims was made for the plot of land to be claimed, usually described by its survey coordinates.
The prospective homesteader paid a filing fee of $10 to claim the land temporarily, as well as a $2 commission to the land agent.
With the application and receipt in hand, the homesteader returned to the land to begin the process of building a home and working the land, as requirements for "proving up" at the end of five years.
When the time had passed and all requirements had been completed, the homesteader was ready, finally, to take legal possession.

An endurance organiser says she will never host FEI competitions again because of the behaviour of Group VII (Middle East) riders at her CEI in August.
A yellow warning card was issued to one UAE rider for incorrect behaviour, and anothers placing was demoted to completion after their altercations with road-crossing stewards at Barbury.
But organiser Linda Kidd believes further violations escaped censure because they were not reported within the FEIs 30-minute rule.
Organisers hand over their site to FEI officials an hour before the start. Mrs Kidd says inappropriate corral areas and gazebos were erected too close to the vet hold area, creating a potential health and safety risk. She also alleges that the new limit on crew numbers was not enforced.
We have run FEI events for four years, and this was the first time weve had Group VII, she said. Dealing with the Dubai Equestrian Club (DEC) took up 95% of my time.
Barbury was just eight days after the new FEI rules took effect on 1 August. You would have thought the UAE would try to respect them.
Mrs Kidd wrote to Endurance GB (ECB) chairman John Hudson, but says he didnt answer all her concerns. She also believes he understated rule-breaking during UK rides this summer in comments to H&H about the sponsorship EGB is discussing with DEC.
Mr Hudson said: EGB are fully aware of the issues that arose at the Barbury Castle event and accept that we did not publicly acknowledge this. We would like to reassure members that we have received a full report from the organiser and are taking this experience into account when planning FEI rides in 2015 and beyond.
Liz Finney, chief steward at Barbury, told H&H: We did not find more than the allowed number attending any horse. There was obviously a large contingent of UAE grooms in the crew area due to the number of UAE-trained horses competing.
This news story was first published in Horse & Hound magazine (13 November 2014).
