I occasionally get email from readers promoting the concept of selecting best-of-breed standalone antivirus, firewall, spam filter, and so on, for the best protection in every area and assembling a DIY security suite. Those enthusiasts are rare, though; for most users the convenience of an integrated suite is irresistible. Avast Internet Security 2015 ($49.99 per year; $69.99 for three licenses) includes almost all the expected suite features, but it's just not up to the quality of the very best suites.
You can fine-tune Avast's user interface to associate the four security components you use most with four big buttons that dominate the main window. A button menu down the left side offers access to every feature, not just the ones you use most. And a large banner across the top reflects security status; green means good. When the banner turns yellow or red to reflect a problem, it also offers a link to fix that problem.
Shared Antivirus This suite is built around the anitivirus protection found in Avast Pro Antivirus 2015. I'll summarize my findings here; read the antivirus review for full details.
Avast's lab test scores range from best to worst. It received AAA-level certification from Dennis Technology Labs and rated Advanced+ in two tests by AV-Comparatives. However, "crazy many" false positives caused it to fail the file detection test from that same lab. Bitdefender and Kaspersky generally take top scores across the board.

In my own hands-on malware blocking test, Avast earned 9.0 of 10 possible point, better than most products tested using this same malware collection. Webroot SecureAnywhere Internet Security Plus (2015) earned a perfect 10 in this test.
My malicious URL blocking test uses newly-discovered malware-hosting URLs, typically no more than four hours old. When I challenged Avast with about 100 of these, it blocked all access to 29 percent at the URL level and eliminated another 43 percent during download, for a total block rate of 72 percent. That's quite good, though McAfee Internet Security 2015 managed to block 85 percent.

WOODBURY, Minn. -- A Woodbury homeowner is hoping home security video helps catch a thief who helped himself to her new snow blower.
The burglary happened on October 22nd, when Jodi Baggenstoss says she accidentally forgot to close her overhead garage door.
Video shot using her home security system shows a light-colored Jeep Wrangler Sahara first case the quiet cul de sac, then back up into Baggenstoss' driveway. You can see someone lifting the snow blower into the back of the SUV, close the tailgate, then quickly leave.
"Very brazen," Baggenstoss says. "I was sick to my stomach that I was sleeping in my bed and this man was in my garage."
Some call it high tech neighborhood watch as more and more homeowners install sophisticated security systems to protect their homes. Just last week in Champlin police arrested a man seen on home security video taking a package from someone's front step.
Security experts like Joe Castro with Nighthawk Security say cameras are a deterrent but to really be protected, homeowners need more.
"Unless there's something connected to that can notify authorities or notify the homeowner, it's pretty much going to be video of somebody taking or doing what they're going to do," Castro says.
Baggenstoss does have a monitored security system, but did not have sensors to tell her the garage door was open. She has since corrected that issue and is now hoping to catch the thief, not to get back her $700 snow blower, but to reclaim her sense of security.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. The temperature outside is dropping, and many around West Michigan are cranking up the thermostat. That means furnace repair companies are gearing up for the busy season.
Earlier in the season tends to be a lot of intermittent issues, said Dave Drescher of GRapids Heating and Cooling. People tend to forget to maintain their furnaces, he said, a carry over issue from last year. Later on in the season, as we get to where the systems are wearing more, are running a lot more, we tend to find hot surface igniters or flame starters tend to go bad.
But what should you be doing to make sure youre not left in the cold as the winter wears on?
Change the filter on a regular basis, Drescher said. He recommends checking the filter on a monthly basis.
Dirty filters, especially once we start a fresh season and somebody maybe forgot to change their filter, were going to take a look and see if the filter is dirty. Can we see through the filter?
And unless youre a handyman, Drescher says, dont try to be a Mr. Fix-it.
Not only is it a potential danger to a homeowner, it can be a situation where if you start monkeying around inside your furnace, you can end up damaging more than whats already been broken, he said.
