Ehrlich Pest Control Selected to Protect National Landmarks

    - November 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) November 12, 2014

Termite control is not just a concern for homeowners, its also vitally important when safeguarding historic buildings throughout the United States. Ehrlich Pest Control, one of the pest control brands of Rentokil North America, has been selected by the National Park Service to install and maintain effective termite control systems for 14 national historic sites in the Delaware Valley, including Independence Hall.

To ensure these sites remain termite free, the National Park Service (NPS) is taking a proactive approach to preserve these national treasures so they will remain structurally sound for generations to come. Ehrlich will be installing the Sentricon System with Always Active technology, the latest innovation in termite control. Sentricon targets and eliminates the termite colony when termite workers feed on the bait in the stations and then share it with the rest of the colony, eventually eliminating the entire colony, including the termite queen, who can produce millions of eggs during her lifetime.

According to the National Pest Management Association, termites are responsible for more than $5 billion in damage annually in the U.S. Older wooden structures are increasingly vulnerable to infestations or may need significant repair from previous infestations. Ehrlich technicians expertly install Sentricon stations around the landmarks.

Independence Hall is such an important structure for American history, its important to protect it from destructive termites without drilling into the buildings delicate foundation, said Jeremy Adamson, sales representative for the Sentricon System. With Sentricon, Ehrlich is expertly helping to protect this structure for future generations, and were happy to be a part of it.

Its a privilege that we were selected by the National Park Service for this crucial protection of our nations most precious assets, said John Myers, president and CEO of Rentokil North America. The NPS is taking an active approach in being the nations steward of historical buildings and pest control is an integral part of its preservation program. Our expert termite control techniciansalong with the Sentricon Systemprovide the NPS with the leading solution for preventing infestations today and in the future.

Ehrlich will be providing services using the Sentricon System with Always Active technology to the 14 sites. Most prominent are the buildings at Independence Square, including Independence Hall, Old City Hall and Congress Hall in Old City Philadelphia. In addition to these iconic buildings under the National Park Service, services will be provided to The Deshler-Morris House and Bringhurst House in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. The Deshler-Morris House is also known as the Germantown White House and is the oldest surviving presidential residence, home to George Washington twice during his term of office. Franklin Court homes on Market Street as well as two surviving residences on Locust Street will also be protected from possible termite damage.

About Rentokil North America Rentokil North America is part of Rentokil Initial plc, one of the worlds largest and most diverse business service companies, operating in more than 60 countries worldwide. - November 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Colleen Schmidt, CTV Calgary Published Wednesday, November 12, 2014 3:18PM MST Last Updated Wednesday, November 12, 2014 3:22PM MST

Calgary police are investigating 16 break-ins in south Calgary and have laid charges against several people in connection to some of the crimes.

Police say the break-ins happened in the communities of Evergreen, Millrise, Auburn Bay, Silverado and Chaparral between October 19 and the 26th.

In a number of cases the culprits were able to gain access to garages though unlocked doors or by removing door openers from vehicles in the driveway.

Police say in some cases the offenders even entered homes through unlocked doors between the house and garage and took keys to vehicles and other property.

In one instance, the culprit returned two days after breaking in and tried to steal a vehicle using stolen keys.

Charges have been laid against several people in connection to six of the incidents and investigators say at least four are related. They are working to determine if any of the other cases are connected.

Police say people should take the following precautions to ensure they are not targets of similar crimes:

Anyone with information on any break-in or vehicle theft is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers anonymously using any of the following methods:

Famed Hollywood hotspot Cat & Fiddle announced in late October that they would shut their doors on its Sunset Boulevard location after 32 years, due to a lease dispute.

The news comes after a recent announcement by the House of Blues on Sunset Boulevard, saying the landmark venue would have to relocate by the end of 2015 to make way for a luxury hotel chain.

The famous seven acre, Hollywood hill, where guests of the Yamashiro restaurant could take in panoramic views of the city, also went on the market Wednesday, Curbed L.A. also reported.

Hollywood, we are worried for your fate, wrote Cat & Fiddle co-owners Paula and Ashlee Gardner on the restaurants Facebook page. Overdeveloped & overpriced. Out-of-town landlords who are worried about their pockets and not their souls. Its a sad place to be.

Paula Gardner opened the first Cat & Fiddle on Laurel Canyon Blvd. in 1982 with her late husband Kim, a British musician who was the bassist in the band The Creation.

Due to popularity and space issues, they had to move a few years later to the current location on Sunset Boulevard. The venue, built in 1929 is rich in history and served as a set for several scenes in the classic film Casablanca.

The Cat, as its often referred to by regulars, is known as a token British-style pub that serves traditional English dishes like bangers and mash and fish and chip, that can be washed down with a classic Bass ale or Boddingtons on tap.

EPA fines Vacaville co. on lead-based paint violations

    - November 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Vacaville-based company that renovates foreclosed homes has been fined $51,000 regarding lead-based paint handling requirements, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Wednesday.

Blue Mountain Air failed to comply with the federal Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair and Painting rule that requires obtaining an EPA certification, using certified renovators and complying with other work practice requirements for handling lead-based paint safely, the EPA said.

Blue Mountain Air and Blue Mountain Realty are subsidiaries of Blue Mountain Inc. that is owned and operated by Greg S. Owen, the EPA said. Owen did not return a call for comment from the Bay City News on the fine Wednesday afternoon.

Blue Mountain Air renovated four foreclosed homes in Napa, Santa Rosa and El Sobrante in 2011 and 2012, the EPA said.

The company did not obtain the required EPA firm certification before the renovations, failed to ensure that a certified renovator was assigned to the renovations and that all workers were certified and trained by a certified renovator and failed to maintain records to ensure warning signs were posted, work areas were contained and a certified renovator performed post-renovation cleaning verifications, according to the EPA.

Renovations include sanding, cutting and demolition that can create hazardous lead dust and chips that can contaminate home surfaces and accumulate to unsafe levels, the EPA said.

Eating and playing can move the lead dust from surfaces, including floors and windowsills, into the person's body and expose children, families and workers to lead poisoning, the EPA said.

"Lead-based paint is the main source of lead poisoning for children, which can cause learning disabilities and behavior problems," said Jared Blumenfeld, the EPA's regional administrator.

The EPA said lead exposure is more dangerous to children than adults because the children's growing bodies absorb more lead and their brains and nervous systems are more sensitive to lead toxicity.

Children younger than 6 years old are most at risk for behavior and learning problems, slow growth, hearing problems and brain and neurological damage, the EPA said.

Indoor Air Pollution Kills Millions Annually

    - November 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    GENEVA

The World Health Organization warns that millions of people every year, mainly in developing countries, are dying from indoor air pollution caused by the use of dangerous fuels and cookstoves in the home. So the organization is issuing new guidelines aimed at reducing health-damaging household pollutants.

The World Health Organization reports nearly 3 billion people have no access to clean fuels and technologies for cooking, heating and lighting. It says more than 7 million people die from exposure to indoor or outdoor air pollution each year. Of that number, WHO reports some 4.3 million people, mainly in developing countries, die from household air pollution emitted by rudimentary biomass and coal cookstoves.

WHO's new guidelines on reducing these indoor pollutants are based on new findings that the use of toxic fuels in inefficient stoves, space heaters, or lamps are to blame for many of those premature deaths.

    Harmful fuel

Carlos Dora, coordinator in WHO's Department of Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health, said people should not use unprocessed coal and kerosine indoors. He said opening a window or door to let out the toxic emissions will not remedy the situation. It only will serve to pollute the outdoors.

You cannot expect that a bit of ventilation is going to get rid of this. It is really about very clean technologies and clean fuels. And the fuel story has not been stressed enough so far in the global debate," said Dora. "So, that is the new thing. We should be going for clean fuels. We should be avoiding coal. We should be avoiding kerosene and we should be going for the solar, the LPG [liquified petroleum gas], the ethanol-the solutions that we know exist that can address a big proportion of this issue.

WHO says indoor pollution leads to premature death from stroke, ischaemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, childhood pneumonia and lung cancer. Women and girls are the main victims.

WHO says these diseases primarily are caused by high levels of fine particulate matter and carbon monoxide released by the burning of solid fuels. These include wood, coal, animal dung, crop waste and charcoal.

Ray and Michele Blundell built their Elizabethan-style home in Lichfield, Staffordshire entirely from scratch Both had come out of divorces when they embarked on the ambitious project in 1998, buying a third-of-an-acre plot The couple spent 90,000 on the land and spent next two-and-a-half years living in a static caravan on the site They taught themselves key building skills and spent 110,000 on building costs as their dream home took shape The home, which includes an oak frame, low ceilings and a spectacular garden, is now worth more than 600,000

Walk past Ray and Michele Blundells home near Lichfield in Staffordshire, and you might think you had stepped back 450 years.

It is in the classic, half-timbered, Elizabethan style - built on an oak frame, with an ancient tiled roof, and the first floor teetering over the ground floor.

In fact, the cottage is only 14 years old. Whats more, the Blundells built the whole thing from scratch, teaching themselves plumbing, electrical wiring and medieval carpentry into the bargain.

Oh, and they also carved a majestic garden out of a dreary third-of-an-acre plot, which had only three plum trees and a lawn when they bought it. And all for only 200,000.
