The third annual American Society of Golf Course Architects Design Excellence Recognition Program has recognized Nicklaus Design and Trump National Golf Links at Ferry Point in the Bronx, New York, with one of 12 Design Excellence awards for 2014. Since its creation in 2012, the Design Excellence Recognition Program has shined a light on the innovation and problem-solving skills required of todays golf course designs.
Nicklaus Design and Ferry Point also received recognition by the Florida Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. The New York City course was one of 30 recipients of the organizations 2014 Design Awards, and was recognized with the Environmental Sustainability Honor, as well as in the Resort and Entertainment Category with an Award of Excellence.
In awarding Ferry Point the Design Excellence Recognition, the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA)the oldest professional organization of golf course designers in Americalauded the environmental responsibility of the Ferry Point project. How does land get transformed after 20-plus years as landfill to an Irish Links-style course? For this Jack Nicklaus Signature course in collaboration with [John] Sanford, it was by working with the land and striving to improve the environment, along with creating really good golf, the ASGCA said.
To date, at least 23 past and present designers who have supported the work of Nicklaus Design have gone on to earn membership in the prestigious American Society of Golf Course Architects, including Ferry Point course designer Jack Nicklaus, Design Associate Jim Lipe, and John Sanford, who collaborated on the project.
The 2014 nominations were reviewed by a panel of golf industry leaders, including representatives of the Club Managers Association of America, Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, Golf Course Builders Association of America and National Golf Course Owners Association.
The Environmental Sustainability Honor by the Florida Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects is presented by the Awards Jury to a single project that exhibits sound sustainable practices as described by the ASLA Environmental Sustainability Policy Statement.
The American Society of Landscape Architects believes that both human civilizations and the natural ecosystems represent integral parts of our environment, and therefore must be protected, restored, and perpetuated. In order to provide a healthy, productive, and socially enriching life for all, the Society urges public and private decision-makers to employ sustainable design policies and practices, minimize environmental degradation, avoid excessive consumption, and respect the needs of future generations.
Trump National Golf Links at Ferry Point features native fescue grasses that cover more than 50 percent of the course, which has only 70 acres of irrigated turf. More than one-third of runoff is recirculated back to the irrigation pond and reused on the course. The balance is delivered to basins, which trap and filter sediments, nutrients and chemicals. The course is scheduled to host a 2017 PGA Tour event, and will open to the public in 2015 upon completion of its clubhouse.

The surface parking lot at Newport on the Levee will be closed for 2 years as an $80 million project is built on that space. (Photo: Enquirer file )
The surface parking lot east of Newport on the Levee is closing Tuesday in preparation for a two-year, $80 million construction project.
The project is expected to add 238 upscale apartments, an 800-space parking garage, a hotel and 8,200 square feet of retail space in Newport along Third Street. The development would serve as a second act for the 13-year-old retail, restaurant and entertainment destination.
BIG PLANS: Read why Levee officials are working on big development projects
Newport on the Levee officials said parking garage access will remain available and other nearby parking options remain available.
The Levee, which draws about 3.5 million visitors a year, has a 20-screen AMC Theater, Newport Aquarium, Axis Alley bowling lounge, GameWorks, and the Funny Bone Comedy Club. It also features national and regional restaurant brands such as Dick's Last Resort, Brio Tuscan Grille, Mitchell's Fish Market, Brothers Bar & Grill and Tom+Chee, office tenants i-wireless, Intrinzic, Constellation Brands and Comstock Valuation, and specialty shops and kiosks.

Shares of Apogee Enterprises, Inc. ( APOG ) reached a new 52-week high of $45.16 on Nov 11 and eventually closed trade at $44.94. The stock price appreciation continues to be fueled by Apogee's robust backlog and strength in architectural markets that has set the momentum for improved results in 2015.
Apogee has delivered a solid one-year return of about 36.2% and year-to-date return of 26.7%, outperforming the S&P 500. Average volume of shares traded over the last three months is approximately 225K.
This Minneapolis-based leader in technologies for design and development of value-added glass products, services and systems has a market cap of $1.29 billion and long-term estimated earnings per share growth rate of 10%.
Strengths of Apogee
Shares of Apogee have started gaining since the company reported second-quarter fiscal 2015 results on Sep 16. Apogee's earnings per share in the quarter improved 67% year over year to 35 cents aided by a strong architectural market. Earnings also benefitted from an IRS 48C energy-efficiency investment tax credit, with startup and commercial production of coatings on the new architectural glass coater.
Backlog increased across the board and was at the highest level in the last 6 years at $480 million. Approximately 59% of the backlog or $285 million, is expected to be delivered in fiscal 2015 and the balance 41% or around $195 million in fiscal 2016 and beyond.
Apogee's architectural businesses are gaining share as revenues for all of them increased 34%. Organic growth at 25% was well above the expected 10% market growth this year. Moreover, based on the robust bidding activity, the company guided revenue growth of 20% (up from the previous 15% to 20% range) and earnings per share in the range of $1.62 to $1.72, for fiscal 2015.
Apogee has reopened its Architectural Glass facility in Utah. The facility, which has been closed since Apr 2013, will resume operations by Jan 2015. This will help the company to meet the growing demand for Architectural Glass. Apogee will also expand its Architectural Finishing facility in Wausau, WI by the second half of fiscal 2016. This will add more than 50% capacity to a critical growth operation.
The Viracon architectural glass fabrication business, in its Architectural Glass segment, continues to benefit from the U.S. tall-building sector, which is at its peak since 2007. The segment has also been gaining from improved operating leverage and pricing.
In the Architectural Framing Systems segment, the U.S. storefront business will benefit from price increases and will continue to be a profit driver for Apogee moving forward. Despite delivering a decline in revenues and profits in the second quarter, demand for the Large-Scale Optical segment is expected to pick up in the third quarter for holiday picture framing glass and acrylic requirements.

LEID Products, LLC., the leader of electronic locker and cabinet storage with biometric asset protection and control, today announced that it has been hired to upgrade electronic components and software for electronic mail lockers at the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) with its Access.it Asset Management System. Keeping locker hardware and just replacing electronic components will cost just a fraction of full electronic locker and control system replacement.
LEID Products Access.it Asset Management System equips the older electronic lockers with new electronic components, controls and software. The new Access.it tracking software will track all activity, validate entry codes and/or card (badge) and provides secure web-based reports. Users and admins are able to access and manage the lockers through an LCD-keypad and/or card reader interface, or remotely via a remote web-based administration platform. Beyond initial installation and warranty period, LEID Products offers ongoing service contracts for continued support throughout the newly extended life of the equipment.
There are many legacy electronic locker systems fielded in government agencies and in the private sector, when they begin failing, finding replacement parts and technical support is problematic, said Sam Hoff, president, LEID Products. When DTRA and DLA began experiencing problems they were proactive in finding a viable solution without having to replace everything, our Access.it technology will make their antiquated system function like a brand new installation with more advanced functionality.
LEID Products offers free consultations to users of legacy electronic lockers systems to review whether and an Access.it upgrade is possible. LEID also provides contracts for professional support services to maintain new and legacy electronic locker systems.
