CLEVELAND Its taken 45 years, but the jokes about the river burning in Cleveland have faded.

Now they cant be replaced by jokes about Lake Erie being the only great lake where you cant drink the water.

We dont want to be the butt of late night comedians again, says Rep. Dave Hall, the Republican chairman of the Ohio House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee.

Hall, whose district stretches from Millersburg north to Brunswick, says the first concern is public safety, and the second is an image problem that can impede economic development in a region that appears poised on the brink of a comeback.

Halls committee will hold hearings to look at what to do to prevent a repeat of what happened last summer in Toledo.

For an entire weekend, close to half a million people living in and near Toledo couldnt drink their water for fear that an algae bloom on Lake Erie had rendered it toxic.

The concern was over a bloom that produced microcystin a toxin that in too high of amounts can lead to liver and stomach problems.

Julius Ciaccia, Executive Director of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, warns that without change, the region is doing worse than playing with fire its playing with its source of drinking water.

(The blooms) will come again, just like the river burned, he says.

There are three main sources of the pollution that leads to the blooms: storm water overflows, faulty septic systems, and farm fertilizer runoff.

INTEREL Announces New Product Releases And Expands Its Global Footprint

MANILA, PhilippinesA restaurant in Marikina City lost much of its stock of food and beverages in a burglary on the eve of its opening, the police said.

Aside from losing key items on its inaugural menu, the management of Fines Herbs Restaurant on Katipunan Street, Barangay Concepcion, also reported the theft of a coffee maker and a cooler, according to SPO1 Charles Pacquing Jr. of the Marikina police.

In a statement to investigators, Paul John Lakasa, a stay-in waiter at the restaurant owned by Lourdes Santos, said he went to sleep on the second floor of the establishment around 11 p.m. Sunday after finishing the preparations for Mondays opening.

He woke up the following day to find the kitchen on the ground floor in disarray. Pacquing said the still unidentified thief destroyed the padlock on the restaurants backdoor and took containers packed with pork, salmon, tuna, shrimps and other ingredients, as well as six bottles of wine and seven cans of soda.

The restaurant, which is located in between a vacant lot and a construction site, was forced to postpone its opening because of the incident.

David Houston, director of a young nonprofit called Homes 4 My Peeps, promotes sustainable housing in neighborhoods as a way of reducing crime, conserving resources and attracting new development. It wasn't Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater house that drew David Houston to architecture, or even the sight of 801 Grand towering above Des Moines. Rather, he recalls finding inspiration growing up in his family's home, a tiny house cramped with four siblings in north-central Des Moines. At the age of 10, Houston didn't dream about growing up designing some grandiose tower. He just wanted to draw up a better home for his family.

He grew up, left Des Moines and earned a degree in architecture. When Houston returned 15 years later, he visited his old neighborhood of River Bend and didn't like what he saw: The boarded-up houses still had boards, he said. The vacant houses were still vacant.

Houston's response: Homes 4 My Peeps, a developing nonprofit he formed in 2012. The organization hopes to transform blighted areas of Des Moines through sustainable home solutions from solar panels to simple recycling that he believes can reduce waste, improve property values and better communities.

The Register spoke with Houston about his nonprofit, which has acquired a house in River Bend he intends to outfit as a green model home for the community. A Fun Run to raise money to the project takes place on Saturday.

Q. In a nutshell, what's Homes 4 My Peeps all about?

It's to provide green housing solutions to blighted communities, promoting sustainability, efficiency and healthy living.

This first home would be used as an incubator and model home. We'd like to promote sustainability through do-it-yourself programs ranging from composting, gardening, hydroponic systems, bee keeping, even permaculture and rainwater harvesting.

Q. Some might wonder whether a busy family in a working class neighborhood would have the time or energy themselves to take up composting or permaculture. What convinces you otherwise?
