Women represent about 43 percent of architectural school graduates in the U.S., but only about 20 percent of licensed architects and 17 percent of principals and partners are women, according to industry statistics.
Those disparities arent doing any favors for architectural firms, according to experts who spoke Tuesday morning at an American Institute of Architects event in Minneapolis.
Its been shown in study after study that companies with a higher proportion of women in top management perform better, said Amy Kalar, a health care architect with Minneapolis-based HGA and co-founder of the AIA Minnesota Women in Architecture Committee.
Kalar and other experts at the AIA Minnesota convention made the business case for bringing more women into architecture and encouraging women to stick with the profession.
The industry has made strides in diversity. According to the American Institute of Architects, about 17 percent of AIA members are women, up from 9 percent in 2000.
But women are still under-represented in leadership roles, even though women have steadily made up about 42 percent of the graduating classes at architecture schools in the Twin Cities since the mid-1990s, Karal said.
A number of factors are holding women back in architecture and other professions, including an unconscious cultural bias, the double burden of career and family obligations and lack of mentors and networking opportunities, Kalar said.
A March 2012 survey of women architects, published by ArchDaily.com, found that 80 percent of women think having children puts them at a disadvantage, and that 48 percent believe they would get paid more if they were men.
Men typically mentor other men and the lack of women in senior leadership roles results in fewer mentorship opportunities for up-and-coming women architects, according to Kalar.
Architecture isnt the only profession that presents challenges for women.

The Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw, Polanddesigned by Helsinki-based firm Lahdelma & Mahlamki Architects in collaboration with Kurylowicz & Associateshas been awarded the first Finlandia Prize for Architecture.
The Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA) created the Finlandia Prize for Architecture to honor an impeccable building designed by a Finnish architect or a building built in Finland within the past three years.
Pawel Paniczko
The jury included Juulia Kauste, director of the Museum of Finnish Architecture; Jorma Mukala, editor-in-chief of the Finnish Architectural Review; and Sixten Korkman, an economics professor at Aalto University. The Museum of the History of Polish Jews was the only building outside of Finland to make the jurys shortlist. The other buildings on the shortlist were Gsta's Pavilion in Mntt, MX_SI and Huttunen-Lipasti-Pakkanen Architects; the Seinjoki Public Library, JKMM Architects; and Kaisa House, the main library for Helsinki University, Anttinen Oiva Architects.
Pawel Paniczko
The museum building, which is used for research, education, exhibitions, and culture related to Jewish heritage, is located adjacent to a memorial that pays tribute to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943. The buildings exterior is wrapped with perforated copper and silkscreen-printed glass panels that feature Latin and Hebrew text. The museum floors are travertine stone, and a large entrance hall cuts through the entire building and features curved walls that extend the full height of the space.
"The mood of the building is solemn and dignified, but at the same time warm and optimistic," says Korkman. "Familiarization with the surrounding building stock leads to the idea that we are dealing with more than just a museum: This building is a powerful and significant work of art that will change the look of Warsaw as a whole."

With council member Rick DeGolia saying the move is a "huge step forward," Atherton has asked five architects to submit proposals for designing a new civic center for the town.
Atherton's City Council on Nov. 5 unanimously approved, with Bill Widmer absent, a request for proposals that will go out to five architects who have been chosen by the Civic Center Advisory Committee to compete for the job of designing the new civic center.
The huge step forward, Councilmember DeGolia said, "is making a decision to go out and interview the architects."
Mayor Cary Wiest agreed. The document that will be sent to the five architects, is, he said, a foundation for what will be the "town's biggest investment now and in the future."
The five firms, chosen from 16 that asked to be considered, are Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, Harley Ellis Devereaux, Siegel & Strain, Swatt/Miers and WNS Studio.
The document approved by the council was prepared by the town staff and the consultants who have been hired to manage the civic center project, Mack5, and then modified by the Civic Center Advisory Committee.
Steve Dostart, chair of the advisory committee, said he thinks the document, which carefully lays out a schedule, expectations and measures to keep costs in control, "is very well thought-through," adding: "This will become the road map to get our project done."
The firms must return their proposals by Dec. 10 and will be interviewed in mid-January by the advisory committee. The council is scheduled to interview the finalists chosen by the committee on Jan. 27.
The new civic center will be funded mostly with privately raised money, and while no commitments of funds have yet been publicly acknowledged, by the time the town hires an architect, the town will need to have private funds in hand to pay the firm.

One Airport Square is a 20,000 m2 mixed-use development currently under construction in the growing commercial district of Airport City in the Ghanaian capital Accra. This Landmark building comprises 2000 m2 of retail space and approximately 18,000 m2 Class A office space over ten floors. Elegant and contemporary, the building has been designed to the highest standards, by award winning sustainability designers; Mario Cucinella Architects, and will be the first green rated building, as well as the first Under Floor Air Conditioning installation in Ghana.
The Joint venture between equity investment company Actis, and Boston Investments is being managed by Laurus Development partners, a portfolio company of Actis. Construction commenced on site in 2012, with a major milestone achieved in February 2014 when workers celebrated topping out 26 days ahead of schedule. The compact design features an internal atrium which has the function of providing light and facilitating natural ventilation in the indoor space. To enhance the natural design, sophisticated mechanical, electrical, plumbing and lighting services were selected by M&E Consultants BDSP, and AET Flexible Space Under Floor Air Conditioning was chosen to provide the additional cooling.
The striking architectural design featuring large structural slabs that project beyond the facade outline, effectively provide horizontal solar shading. Extensive environmental analysis was undertaken to optimise the design and orientation of the overhangs with different glazed facade configurations, and adopting mixed-mode ventilation enables a total reduction of over 30% active cooling. MC Architects report a reduction of 48% of HVAC related CO2 emissions using their sustainable designs, and the New Build is the first project in Ghana to be awarded 4* Greenstar (SA) certification.
To supplement the natural ventilation within the building, an AET Flexible Space Under Floor Air Conditioning system provides cooling to the Class A office areas. This is a zonal CAM-V option which utilises the floor plenum beneath the raised access floor as the ventilation duct for the conditioned supply air. With a CAM-V system, used air travels back to the downflow unit for reconditioning via high level. Each floor was divided into four tenancy areas, each served by two AET CAM-V33 units. The air is introduced into the space via a fan terminal or Fantile unit, which has the added benefit of individual personal control of air flow and temperature via the integrated Fatronic controller, and this building is served by more than nine hundred standard TU4 fantile units.
The project is due for completion this year and AET Flexible Space engineers have travelled to Ghana for commissioning of the UFAC equipment. Flexible office space from 450m2 at Ghanas most prestigious address will be available. One Airport Square, Accra, the first building in Ghana to feature Under Floor Air Conditioning.
