Plumber told garda he tested boiler for leaks

    - November 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A plumber on trial for manslaughter arising out of a gas leak at the Trident hotel in Kinsale, Co Cork, had told garda he had tested the boiler for possible leaks with a computerised testing device. But the accused later stated he had not done so.

The accused mans own lawyer said yesterday what Richard Davis first told garda, in this regard, was untrue and he clarified it.

Mr Davis, aged 44, from Serenity, Killanully, Ballygarvan, Co Cork, is on trial for manslaughter of Miriam Reidy, and two breaches of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.

His company, Davis Heating and Plumbing Contractors, of Marina Commercial Park, Cork, is charged with two similar breaches of the act relating to the conversion of a gas boiler at the Trident on January 4, 2011. All charges are denied.

Judge Sen Donnabhin and a jury at Cork Circuit Criminal Court were told yesterday of a pre-prepared statement made by Mr Davis to Garda Michael Brosnan at Kinsale Garda Station on January 10.

Ms Reidy was found dead in her hotel bedroom at lunchtime the previous day.

In his statement, he said he worked as a plumber for 26 years and had completed the recognised courses to be a gas installer, and his company had carried out work at the Trident for 25 years.

Mr Davis said he had a Kane analyser, which he described as effectively a handheld computer to take readings from boilers and store them on the computer and print an information ticket with the reading.

On January 4, Mr Davis was in Kinsale for some other work and inserted a chip into a Worchester Bosch Greenstar Forty CD 1 boiler at the Trident so it could be used with liquid petroleum gas as it was configured at that time for natural gas. I put in the chip in one of the new boilers and did an analysis with the Kane analyser. Everything was OK and I fired up the boiler, Mr Davis said in his first statement.

During the trial yesterday, Michael OHiggins, defending, said: Any suggestion that the Kane analyser was used on January 4 is incorrect. It is untrue. That was later clarified to the garda to their satisfaction.

How End-to-End MDM Leaves Rollins With One Less Pest to Control

    - November 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    .

For many enterprises, a mobility strategy means fine-tuning customer-facing apps. Other companies, however, aim to take their in-house mobility management to the next level. Rollins, an Atlanta-based company that provides pest control services through 10 subsidiaries, including Orkin, recently selected a service provider to provide end-to-end mobile device management.

The partnership with Bethesda, Md.-based Digital Management Inc. (DMI), announced in October, goes beyond traditional management approaches that focus mainly on tracking devices. Bryan Larrieu, managing director of IT customer service at Rollins, says the company previously employed a mobile device management provider, but the nature of the service has changed in recent years. Rollins went back into the market for device management to tap into a broader set of services. DMI offers enterprise mobility services to commercial and government entities.

[ Analysis: Mobility Brings Changing Roles for CIOs, Workers and Businesses ]

"If you talked about mobile device management three years ago, it was all about being able to locate a device and ... disable [it] should it get away," Larrieu says. "Today, from a managed services standpoint, it's a lot more feature-rich."

The current service menu includes mobile application development and distribution as well as device logistics, which includes staging, imaging and provisioning devices.

The scope of DMI's arrangement with Rollins covers more than 5,000 company-owned devices, many of which are in the hands of service technicians. A critical aspect of the device management pact is the ability to resupply those technicians when they lose a device or experience a defective unit. Technicians use mobile apps that help them conduct business, so keeping them equipped with functioning devices lets them continue to create "billable moments," Larrieu says.

The DMI relationship gets replacement devices to the field the day after a mishap occurs -- provided DMI receives the request by midafternoon. "We can turn these devices around pretty quickly," he says.

DMI also provides device configuration services. Sam Ganga, executive vice president for DMI's Commercial Division, says the company makes as many changes as possible over the air, to minimize business disruption. A significant change to the base image that runs on Rollins' mobile devices will require the units to come into DMI's facility for an upgrade.

Bait, cage and even shoot foxes: Wandsworth Council's suggestions for dealing with urban fox problems

    - November 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

"Cut off foxs food supply so as to limit their numbers" is the message from Wandsworth Council.

A press release from the council, which says it does not deal with foxes, urges residents to put their rubbish bags in a bin with a lid so as to limit their food supply.

Deputy leader of the council and environment spokesman,Councillor Jonathan Cooksaid: "Foxes are now a common sight in London.

"While some people welcome them as an interesting addition to the capital's wildlife others view them as pests who cause a multitude of problems.

"The most humane and natural way to control the fox population is to limit their food supply. The less food there is for them to eat - the fewer there will be."

Baited cage traps, shooting, commercial animal repellents and snaring are just some of the other methods discussed within the release from Wandsworth Council on dealing with the "problem" of foxes, although a spokesman said it was not suggesting them, only discussing them.

The release said: "There are a number of commercial animal repellents available, but only those approved for use against foxes under the Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986 may be used.

"Although snaring is a legal method of fox control, it does pose risks for domestic animals. Snares must be visited at least once a day, but ideally more frequently to minimise the suffering of any animals caught.

"Shooting is not usually appropriate in urban areas, but where it is carried out, care must be taken to ensure the safety of the public and other wildlife.

"If a vixen is shot during the breeding season, the den has to be traced and the whole family of cubs humanely killed.

The mystery of the alleged rats at Union Station

    - November 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Downtown business owners are bracing for a rat infestation after a pest control company warned that the demolition and construction of several underground structures at Union Station has displaced a large rat colony, forcing its migration to new areas of the downtown.

But the exact location and size of the rat colony remain a mystery along with other facts about the alleged rats.

Nobody knows. Mike Heimbach, spokesman for Abell Pest Control, which sent out the news release, said the company does not service Union Station but has received a lot more calls about rats from residents and business owners in the area. He also said that its not a colony but a population of rats.

What do Metrolinx and the TTC say?

Nope, havent seen a single rat, said Metrolinx media relations manager Anne Marie Aikins, who works out of Union Station. She added that rats arent usually seen on the Metrolinx level and are generally found underground.

We have no reports of any increased activity in rats, said TTC spokesman Brad Ross.

Where in the station were they living?

Nobody knows. Rats are common in any city, especially in underground areas like subways. Since Abell doesnt service Union, none of its workers have gone in to look for rats, Heimbach said.

    Where are the rats going?

No one really knows. Heimbach said the station rats are pushing out other rats in the area, which in turn causes those rats to spread out through the city. As well, since its getting colder, more rats will try to get indoors.
