St. Columban's teacher Meghan Henry and student Eric Brisebois show off the barren landscape that is the school yard.
CORNWALL, Ontario - The students at St. Columban's School in Cornwall want some grass in their yard - and they need your help to get it.
The school has been chosen by Aviva Insurance to take part in a community fund to help beautify the property at its Augustus Street locale.
The school is in the running for thousands of dollars to help offset the cost of turning the barren concrete and asphalt that dominates the yard into a lush, green landscape.
But the school is not alone in petitioning Aviva for funding. As part of the community fund project, the school is up against other worthy submissions that want to take advantage of the same funding pot.
People can vote online for the St. Columban's projecthere.
Meghan Henry, a Grade 1 teacher at the school, said the children are desperate for some grass in the school yard.
"It's what they really want," she said, adding some have approached her to suggest tripping and scraping one's knee on a grassy field is more desirable than the hard asphalt that currently exists.
There are just a few days for votes to be collected. If St. Columbans is successful in this round of voting, it will be on to the semifinals and more voting, before spots are determined for the final round and cash is doled out.

School needs your help to renovate its yard
This summers pool party season will be the biggest in years, with three favourites - Waltham Pool, Lytteltons Norman Kirk Memorial Pool and the Scarborough paddling pool - opening for the first time since the 2011 earthquakes.
These pools will join Jellie Park, Halswell and Templeton as the 2014/15 summer pool season hits. Festivities officially begin on Saturday 15 November with the opening of the Jellie Park and Halswell pools, with Templeton Pool following on Saturday 6 December.
Christchurch City Council Recreation and Sports Unit Manager John Filsell says theres extra cause for celebration this year.
"The Councils Facilities Rebuild team has pushed hard to reopen these three biggies in time for the summer season, so were thrilled to be able to include Waltham and Lyttelton pools in the party season. Theyll be a bit of a present to these communities that have been without for nearly four years, and the welcome-back parties are a thank-you for their patience and support."
Show Weekend sees the citys paddling pools opening for the summer, including New Brighton Whale Pool, Christchurch Botanic Gardens, Abberley Park, Edgar MacIntosh Park, Spencer Park and Woodham Park. The paddling pool at Scarborough will follow before Christmas.

Norman Kirk Memorial Pool
The anticipated December opening date for Lytteltons Norman Kirk Memorial Pool has been revised to 23 January 2015. The delay has been due to more-complex-than-expected ground conditions, with 400 cubic metres of ground needing to be dug out and replaced. The Lyttelton Lives On pool party will be held on Saturday 28 February.

Three Chch summer pools make a comeback

Timmons Groups landscape architecture team, led by Scott Wiley and Lu Gay Lanier, won the Jefferson Avenue Pocket Park Design Competition held this fall. The pocket park, an existing undeveloped green space, is located along a major gateway corridor of the Church Hill and Union Hill communities. The competition was hosted by 3HC, the junior board of The Better Housing Coalition, who teamed with The Enrichmond Foundation and Friends of Jefferson Park to beautify and transform the park into a cherished, environmentally friendly community space.
Participants of the competition were encouraged to address community input, shared community space, low maintenance practices, history, aesthetics, and environmental sustainability into their design concepts. Wiley and Lanier addressed each of these in their Two Hill Park design, created to celebrate the rich history of the two adjacent communities through respect and stewardship of the natural environment, while preserving valuable green space for future generations. The design offered a low maintenance, native and adaptive plant palette, and a balance of hardscape materials and green space to encourage a variety of activities.
The park is a unique, historic space within the City that has the potential to truly compliment the surrounding homes and businesses, said Wiley. It is inspirational to see the commitment of 3HC and their community partners for supporting, establishing, and maintaining this park for the future of Church Hill and Union Hill. I am honored to have been selected and am looking forward to seeing the design of Two Hill Park come to life.
A local jury consisting of Better Housing Coalition staff, planning commission and urban design commission members, and other civic leaders first narrowed down entries to five finalists that best addressed the major points of consideration. The final voting was open to the public on the evening of October 30, 2014. Over the next year, initiatives will be taken to finalize the design and gain approval from the City. Fundraising is an ongoing effort for the park and once the design is approved, the project is anticipated for construction in late 2015, or early 2016.

Now that the new political landscape is set Washington, president Obama called a bi-partisan luncheon yesterday to discuss upcoming issues that Capitol Hill will face over the next two years. In attendance of the lunch was South Dakota senator john Thune, who took the president's attempt at meeting with house and senate republicans as sincere. This is promising news to our senator as hopefully this means there will be more discussion, more compromise, and more legislation passed in the final two years of Obamas presidency. Well it's always a little bit about optics as you know in Washington, but I appreciate the fact that the President was reaching out to Senate and House republicans and democrats, it was a Bi-Partisan meeting. But I think he wants to try and create the conditions and a foundation of trust in order for us to get some things done said Thune.
Thune went on to say that in order for the republican majority leaders, and the democratic president to work together, that may hinge on Obama not using as much executive action to bypass congresses approval.

Senator Thune Discusses New Political Landscape in Washington
The Pahang Government wants the MACC to produce evidence of the allegations in its report.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Pahang Government has reportedly taken the position that theres no evidence of politicians and the palace being involved in illegal land clearing in the Cameron Highlands, as alleged by the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission in a report on July 22.
It was learnt that a meeting of the Pahang National Security Council meeting on July 22, chaired by Pahang Menteri Besar Adnan, dismissed the MACC report on the grounds that it was hearsay.
The Pahang Government wants the MACC to produce evidence of the allegations in its report, according to sources privy to the July 22 meeting. To say that the state government does not take action when confronted with facts is unfair.
Adnan has since been reminded by the Malay press not to overstay his welcome. He also stands accused by the Malay press of being arrogant.
