History is all around the Regency at Chancellorsville, an amenity-rich development in Fredericksburg for residents 55 and over that sits on portions of a onetime Civil War battlefield.
Once completed, the Regency at Chancellorsville will have 280 single-family houses.
Surrounded by woods with miles of paths, the community is a picturesque oasis near permanently protected open land dubbed the Chancellorsville Battlefield. This includes trails with plaques that explain the historic significance of the fighting on the site in the 1800s.
The development is named for the Battle of Chancellorsville, which was one of the major skirmishes of the Civil War in 1863. More than 30,000 soldiers were said to have died in the battle, including General Thomas Stonewall Jackson. The South, led by Generals Jackson and Robert E. Lee, defeated a large army from the North, resulting in one of Lees greatest victories for the Confederates.
Malcolm and Marge Huffman moved into the Spotsylvania County neighborhood at the end of May after downsizing from their single-family home on seven acres in King George County, about 25miles west of Fredericksburg. They were attracted to the size of the development and the extra amenities it offered.
A couple of years ago, we started to think if we should continue to stay or to downsize to a property with less maintenance, Malcolm Huffman said. After looking around at other 55-and-over communities in the area, they decided on the Toll Brothers development.
Tae Wills, sales manager for the Regency at Chancellorsville, said buyers in the community have been coming from all over the region. Recently, she said, she had buyers from LaPlata in southern Maryland who are looking for a maintenance-free lifestyle.
It was a good feeling hearing the lawn mower and knowing someone else was on the other side, said Huffman, adding that not having to cut the grass was a big selling point.
Built with guests in mind: The community offers four two-bedroom, two-bathroom home styles that are highly customizable and range mostly from 1,685 to 2,026square feet. All of the homes feature 10-foot ceilings on the main level, large walk-in closets and hardwood floors in the foyer, kitchen and breakfast rooms, and an attached two-car garage. The Bedford is $301,995 and is the smallest model. It offers an elegant foyer that opens into a 29- by 15-foot great room and dining room combination.

A new restaurant and shopping plaza has been proposed for the Hilltop Steak House lot on Route 1 South, Wicked Local/Saugus reported.
On Oct. 28, Hilltop attorney Peter Rossetti Jr. came before the Board of Selectmen to announce that the property owned by High County Investors had been sold, and to request a renewal of the existing liquor license.
Developer Ross Hamlin said he plans to demolish the Hilltop Steak House restaurant and rebuild a 200-plus seat restaurant and shopping center on the property, starting as early as April of next year.
If construction begins in April, Hamlin estimated an October 2015 finish date for the project.
Hamlin told the board that the restaurant will be a full-service, family-friendly establishment with white tablecloths.
While Rossetti and Hamlin would not disclose the buyers name or specific plans for the restaurant or space, Hamlin did say there will probably be some steak involved. That, and the giant neon cactus sign will remain.
The new structure will be built further back from Route 1 South than the existing structure is presently situated. Hamlin said the restaurant will stand alone, and that the shopping center will be located in the back.
Selectman Steve Castinetti supported a liquor license renewal.
The Hilltops been a good neighbor to this town. The cactus put us on the map for many, many years, said Castinetti. People knew the Hilltop all over the country. And as such, they were good to us, I think we need to be good to them.
The selectmen were prepared to vote in favor of renewing the liquor license through 2014, but realized they would vote on that next month when all the licenses come up for renewal. After some discussion, board members simply referred the update to their files.

Have a Tip or Think You Are a Victim?
A Red Oak woman tells police when Aaron Johnson, 38, came to her apartment she thought he was there to exterminate bugs. Instead, she now believes he planted them, after she found an audio recording device in her bedroom.
The recording device she found was under her bedroom TV box. When Red Oak police did a search, they found a second audio recording device behind her bed on the floor.
Police quickly narrowed the crime down to one suspect, Johnson. They executed a search of his home after getting a warrant and found more audio recording devices and several firearms with ammunition. (To see a some of the evidence pictures, click on the View Gallery button above the video box.)
Johnson was immediately arrested for electronic and mechanical eavesdropping, a serious misdemeanor, and a felon in possession of a firearm, a class D felony.
Montgomery County Attorney Bruce Swanson said the evidence in the case is strong.
"It's bizarre and it's frightening," said Swanson. "This lady was very frightened and justifiably so. When they found the second one she really got upset. That is a massive invasion of your privacy."
Johnson owns his own pest control company called RMPKA, which is how police believe he was able to get inside the victim's apartment.

SALT LAKE CITY A Utah dad foiled an attempt to kidnap his young daughter from her bed early Friday after confronting a man carrying her across the lawn.
The 5-year-old girl wasnt hurt in the frightening experience, but the incident has evoked haunting echoes of when 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was snatched out of her Salt Lake City bedroom in 2002. She was held captive for nine months before being found.
The suspect in this case entered the home through an unlocked door or window about 4:30 a.m. in Sandy, a middle-class suburb south of Salt Lake City, Police Sgt. Dean Carriger said.
The intruder was in the familys basement searching through things when he came upon the girl sleeping in her bedroom, Carriger said. The suspect took her out of bed and carried her upstairs, making noises that woke the parents.
The girls father went to the door and saw the man carrying his daughter in the front lawn. He ran outside and confronted the man, wrestling away his daughter.
The suspect then fled, and the father called 911.
Officers set up a perimeter, and with the help of police dogs, launched a search. The suspect went into a second home, where the residents heard him and called police.
Police captured the 46-year-old man outside that second home thanks to a police dog that bit the suspect in the upper shoulder, Carriger said.
The family told police they had never seen and dont know the suspect, who police have identified as Troy Morley of Roy, Utah. Police dont know yet why the suspect was in the house or if he had a planned it, Carriger said.
Morley is still at the hospital receiving medical treatment for the dog bite but is expected to be arrested later Friday and booked on charges of child kidnapping and burglary.

WASHINGTON (AP) Offering a pre-Veterans Day salute to U.S. troops, President Barack Obama said Thursday that the "American patriots" who voluntarily go into harm's way to keep the country safe and protect its cherished freedoms have the respect and admiration of a grateful nation.
The commander in chief also spoke movingly of having met a service member who was left on death's doorstep after being wounded in an explosion during his fifth tour of duty in Afghanistan, and how that individual was brought back to life, in part, through hours and hours of music therapy.
"He's even playing, as I understand it, a little bit of golf," Obama said as he opened a musical tribute to service members, veterans and their families. "We honor them with the beauty of music, music that has the power to inspire us and fill us with pride and, yes, sometimes to help us heal."
The program is the latest edition in the PBS series "In Performance at the White House." It was taped inside of a large tent erected on the South Lawn with a view of the White House, and was attended by first lady Michelle Obama, Cabinet secretaries and several hundred service members, veterans and families.
It was scheduled to be broadcast Friday on PBS stations nationwide.
The night featured rock and roll by the band Daughtry, performing via satellite from a USO concert in Japan, and country music from Willie Nelson. Hip-hop artist Common, singer Mary J. Blige, John Fogerty and Latin musician Romeo Santos also performed.
Obama said the mix of rock, country and everything in between was "fitting because here in America, no matter where you're from, no matter what music you listen to, we're all united in our respect and admiration for our brave men and women who wear our country's uniform."
Obama has said lifting up those men and women is one of his top priorities.
He met Wednesday with the top two officials at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Secretary Robert McDonald and Sloan Gibson, the deputy secretary, urging both to continue working to improve services, health care and accountability for veterans, the White House said.
Obama also regularly touts administration efforts to cut the staggering backlog of disability claims filed by veterans, reduce homelessness among them and help veterans, their spouses and children pursue higher education under the post-9/11 GI bill.
