For those who yearn for the days of a silent public library, a visit to the Reddick Library in Ottawa is in order.

Based on public input solicited during the planning process, one of the many features of the newly remodeled building which will see its grand opening Sunday is a quiet reading room in its northwest corner. In order to provide the maximum quiet, the room is far away from the new circulation desk and other high traffic areas, said Library Director Kathy Clair.

We took to heart that a number of people in the community said that they wanted one space that was reminiscent of a traditional library that was absolutely quiet, she said. So we created that space in probably the most pleasant corner of the building.

With north and west windows, glass interior walls, big comfy chairs and long work tables, the quiet room already has been claimed by folks with books and periodicals as well as students with homework who need to focus on studies.

Signs inform patrons that the room is a technology-free zone, a ban that applies to e-readers and similar devices.

A grand opening for the entire library will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9.

For those who like ceremonies the event will start with a ribbon-cutting at 2 p.m. in the new community room and remarks by library officials.

There will be light refreshments and music provided by The Flute Studio. Patrons will be able to take self-guided tours with plenty of library staff members available to assist and answer questions.

Clair said the librarys new color scheme has drawn the most favorable comments from patrons. She said the second most commented-on aspect of the remodeling is that even though the exterior dimensions are unchanged, the inside appears larger.

The space is used more efficiently, said Clair. There are literally no wasted corners now.

It took a lot of coordination with local utilities, state agencies and various stakeholders for the team to build this 202,000-sq-ft, steel-framed arena and 27,000-sq-ft convention center. The facility was built just 3 ft away from the foundation of the 50-year-old Bangor Auditorium, which remained in operation during construction before it was demolished.

Detailed logistics planning and daily communication went into the project along with extensive coordination of both deliveries and major work activities. The construction manager says these qualities helped to ensure that the existing auditorium ran smoothly while the new structure was erected and helped to advance the project schedule.

The Bangor facility's exterior shell was comprised of only a thin layer of corrugated asbestos, and the siding was so thin that daylight seeped through the seam of the panels. Demolition included removing the asbestos and other hazardous materials.

The hazardous materials abatement process had the greatest impact on the schedule because of the vast quantity of materials and technical labor involved. The process involved wrapping each piece of asbestos material in plastic and placing it in a special waste disposal location to ensure that particles did not enter the air.

The building was carefully dismantled down to the existing shell before heavy machinery could be used for the demolition.

The carefully executed process paid off as the entire demolition was completed with zero environmental incidents, the construction manager says.

Friedman's hiring by CEO Stan Kasten was announced on Oct. 14. In the three weeks that followed, Friedman has added two cabinet members who blend youth and experience, while demonstrating a cutting-edge analytical intellect and a respectful appreciation for old-school baseball.

But unlike the Dodgers' previous foray into analytics with the hiring of Paul DePodesta before the 2004 season, this collection of new-breed execs includes Friedman, a GM for nine seasons, and Byrnes, twice a GM covering nearly a decade.

Zaidi comes from the same Oakland training ground as DePodesta. Gasparino has already been a scouting director, and Kapler, most recently a FOX TV analyst, played 11 seasons as a Major League outfielder.

While fans remain understandably fixated on a 26-year World Series drought, the new regime will be equally focused on delivering Kasten's promise to revitalize a player-development pipeline that fell into disrepair under previous ownerships and still struggles to promote difference makers to the Major Leagues.

In the big league dugout, Friedman has said manager Don Mattingly will return for 2015, but Mattingly's coaching staff remains in limbo.
