Katherine Schmidt and Samantha Kraus Named SEC Riders of the Month Gamecocks sweep hunt seat awards for October Nov. 5, 2014 South Carolina senior Katherine Schmidt was named SEC Rider of the Month in equitation over fences for the month of October. In the Oct. 31 win over Texas A&M, Schmidt posted a career-high score of 93.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - University of South Carolina senior Katherine Schmidt (equitation over fences) and junior Samantha Kraus (equitation on the flat) were both named SEC Riders of the Month for October, it was announced today. This is Schmidt's fourth career SEC Rider of the Month honor, while Kraus received the conference award for the first time.

Because the conference does not award a Rider of the Month for September, riders' individual statistics were counted for October.

In equitation over fences, Schmidt went 4-0 in September and October with two MVPs to earn her fourth career SEC Rider of the Month award. Schmidt went 3-0 in the jumping against SEC opponents, and posted back-to-back scores above 90 for the first time in her career.

In equitation on the flat, Kraus went 4-0 in September and October with one MVP, giving her the team's best flat record this season. She won her first career flat MVP against No. 1 Georgia on Oct. 3, posting an event-high score (84) to win her point.

South Carolina returns to action on Friday, when the Gamecocks travel to face Fresno State. Friday's meet against the Bulldogs will begin at 4 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network. Fans can watch the meet live for free online.

There are few people who know more about bad days for flying than Brian De Bruin and his team at GEs jet engine testing facility in Peebles, Ohio. The teams job is to make sure that GE engines keep working when they run into bad thunderstorms or a stray seagull. They expose the machines to hail and monsoon rain, hit them with bird carcasses, and even set off small explosions inside to simulate blade failure. Some of these tests are relatively benign, but others are quite damaging, De Bruin says. Youve got to prove that your engines are good.

De Bruin is the site leader at thePeebles Test Operation, located in a bucolic corner of Ohio where GE has been putting engines through their paces for six decades.

When the site opened in 1954, the five technicians who worked there poured concrete for the first test stand and brought their measuring instruments in a moving van. They were led by Leo Pappy White, a legendary GE engineer who had been previously firing captured German V-2 rockets at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

White and his team started testing new jet fuels and engines at Peebles. "Back then, you could stand 100 feet behind the jet engine and have a conversation," remembers Orvile Jones, 93, who took over as manager of the site after White left.

At the time, Peebles was a lonely place. Besides the five of us, there were five security guards patrolling the property on horses and making sure that people didnt come near where we running secret operations, Jones says.

    'Devastated' widower honours his family

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A BEREAVED father and husband cycled coast to coast to raise thousands of pounds in memory of his wife and baby.

David Wood, 29, was left 'devastated' in May when his 'beautiful' wife Nicola, 28, collapsed and died while pregnant at their Ulverston home.

And just six days later their first child Charlotte also died, having been starved of oxygen for 30 minutes.

But the electrician and 44 friends decided to take on the challenging route from Whitby to Walney and braved the 180-mile journey through wind and rain earlier this month.

"I was a bit emotional - every emotion went through me and I was just so happy we had finished, and then of course I was thinking about why we were all doing it."

Starting out with a target of 30,000, the cyclists have raised more than 24,000 for the Nicola and Charlotte Fund which will go towards buying specialist equipment for the Royal Preston Hospital and Furness General Hospital, Barrow.

Cold, snow wont stop building projects

Construction projects in Laramie could be finished by next spring, even if the weather doesnt cooperate.

The outer shell for future professional offices at the corner of Fourth and Harney streets should be finished by next month, said Mike Peck, partner in the project. The building was previously a laundromat, but should be four 1,400-square-foot offices after the renovation.

The location is fantastic, he said. Itll be one of the best locations in town for offices. There has already been interest in the building.

Attorneys, accountants and other professionals would likely move into the space, Peck said. The building should be open to tenants by April, he said. There is also space adjacent to the building for future expansion, but no plans are currently in place.

Construction at the University of Wyoming Plaza is also on schedule. The shell for the retail building on Grand Avenue should be finished within the week, said Randy Hall, representative for University Plaza, LLC. Contractors have been grading the area slated for a movie theater and have just obtained a building permit. The steel has already been ordered and should be on site in the near future.

There is a superintendent on site, Hall said. The foundation should get started pretty quick.

Work should continue throughout the winter, he said. Crews will probably take brief periods off when work is not possible. He said the project should be done around March 1. A theater group would then take over the building and finish the interior in about 90 days.

Whites University Motors on Grand Avenue is renovating their showroom and is on schedule to finish at the end of December.

We tore off the old showroom, General Manager Dave Meade said. This will be a completely new, state-of-the-art Ford Trustmark design.

Asphaltindiana.org is your one stop shop for advocacy, professional development, research, networking and advancing technology. Membership helps to ensure that the concerns and viewpoints of the industry are represented by a strong unified voice. Together, we support the strategic marketing of the many benefits of asphalt. Responsive, professional and focused on quality, APAIis truly The Public's Partner in Building Indiana's Infrastructure.

The Eight Key User/Owner Benefits of Asphalt Construction

Cost Effective - not only does asphalt pavement have the lowest initial cost when compared to other alternative pavement products, but its' life cycle cost (when measured over the entire life of the pavement) are also lower than other competitive pavement products.

Constructibility/Speed of Construction - asphalt pavements constructed during the day are normally ready to have traffic that same day. This allows better access to adjacent businesses and improved traffic flow through and around the projects reducing user delay while continuing to construct the project.

Smooth - asphalt pavements are the smoothest pavements placed in the country today.

Versatile - asphalt pavements can be tailored to the specific application during the design phase of the project allowing for the unique characteristics of each project. Design life from 5 years to in excess of 30 years can be accommodated easily. For cost sensitive projects staged construction can be a viable design alternative with asphalt concrete pavements as a way to accommodate increased traffic flow while remaining sensitive to the structural integrity of the pavement.

City and county at odds over road paving

    - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Wright County Supervisors decided Monday to again delay the paving of 700 feet of 150th Street leading to the MaxYield fertilizer plant on the south edge of Belmond.

Belmond City Manager Lee Ann Waltzing appeared at the weekly board meeting to check on the status of the blacktop project. In May of 2012, before the fertilizer plant was built, the city and county discussed sharing the cost of improving the gravel road on a 50-50 basis, with the county doing the engineering work. The county engineer said at that time he would draw the plans in 2013 so the paving could be done in 2014.

The city and the county both signed an official 28E agreement to share the work 50-50, but at the insistence of the supervisors, the document did not include a timeline.

So over the past 30 months, nothing has happened. The Belmond City Council set aside $150,000 for its share of the work in the 2013-14 city budget. The plant opened in July 2013. And in January 2014, city officials asked why the county was dragging its feet.

But the city and the county made a commitment to MaxYield, said Waltzing. When are we going to follow through on it?

Board members acknowledged that in the past couple of years the county paid for paving roads to the ADS plant in Eagle Grove, Sparboe near Eagle Grove, and Clarion Packaging. But they claim that those three projects created more jobs than MaxYield.

County Engineer Adam Clemons said Monday, I am looking for some direction on where to go with this.

Boardmembers asked Clemons about engineering the project now but not doing the paving until a later date.

Clemons said the problem with that is, there could be changes in the law, codes, or specifications of the project between now and then, so it might have to be re-engineered. That would cost the county additional time and money. He also mentioned that money is tight, and showed photographs of several culverts in the county that need replacement.

The supervisors decided to contact MaxYield and find out if the co-op has any expansion planned. From there they will decide whether or not to move forward with the project.
