Wollongong police have asked residents to keep an eye on their garages and sheds after a number of domestic break-ins.
Wollongong police have asked residents to keep an eye on their garages and sheds after a number of domestic break-ins.
Police said expensive items including power tools, trail bikes, surfboards, golf clubs and motor vehicles had been taken from detached garages and garden sheds in recent months.
Reports provided by Lake Illawarra police suggest similar activity is occurring right through the southern part of the region as well.
Thieves broke into an Albion Park Rail garage on Saturday, stealing tools and a CB radio from a parked 4WD; while a gun safe was the target of a similar break-in at Flinders last week.
Other garages have been targeted at Gerroa, Dapto and Tarrawanna in recent weeks, with thieves taking ride-on lawnmowers, motorcycles and even dressmaking scissors.
Police have urged residents to secure their garages and sheds as well as their homes. They recommend security measures including window locks, deadlocks on doors, motion sensor lighting, security grills and alarm systems.
More information on securing your home can be found on the Crime Prevention page at police.nsw.gov.au.

Global oil prices reversed a rally on Monday, with benchmark Brent returning to the red after a big hike in Saudi Arabia's monthly export prices was viewed as a signal OPEC's largest producer may be seeking to curb output.
State oil firm Saudi Aramco said it would raise the price of its flagship Arab light crude in December for customers in Asia and Europe, reversing some price cuts the previous month. It will cut prices for U.S. buyers.
The kingdom has signaled it was willing to put up with lower oil prices, and last month's big price cuts had triggered a deeper decline in global markets. The higher prices for December cargoes may now discourage buyers, some said.
Oil traders may see the latest price hikes as an indication that the Saudis are now "less worried about market share and more concerned about crude prices," said Joseph Posillico, senior vice president of energy derivatives at Jefferies LLC.
The U.S. dollar powered to a seven-year peak against the yen and a two-year high against the euro on Monday, extending gains after the Bank of Japan's latest stimulus and punishing oil and gold priced in the U.S. currency.
Although prices initially rose in midday trading, by late in the U.S. session both the U.S. and international contracts had retreated.
Brent was sharply lower, off more than $1 to near $84 per barrel. Earlier it had slipped below $85 as a stronger dollar punished oil and gold, commodities that are priced in the U.S. currency.

U.S. crude tumbled by more than 2 percent, ending down $1.76 at $78.78 per barrel.
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries pumped 120,000 barrels per day less crude oil in October, a Reuters survey showed on Friday, although overall supply stayed well above the cartel's output target of 30 million bpd.

Googles Nexus Player should appeal to those who want smarter TVs. But it will need to do much more to be the hub of all home entertainment.
Googles Nexus Player lets you stream videos and music to your TV from the Web, and play games, too.
Last year, Google invited itself into the living room with the Chromecast, a $35 dongle that plugs into the back of any TV with an HDMI port and lets you play online videos and other content on your television from another device.
Now, Google hopes to get even comfier on the couch with the Nexus Player, a $99 black disc with a Bluetooth remote control that turns any TV with an HDMI port into an Internet-connected TV that can stream movies, play music and video games, and run select Android apps.
The simple, user-friendly design of the Nexus Players hardware and software, along with great voice search, make it a good deal for those who dont already have a connected TV. Assuming a larger number of apps become available in the near future, it may even eventually be worth it for people like myself who already have a connected TV but hate the interface.
The Nexus Player software is thoughtfully laid out, dominated by a row of popular movies and TV shows along with a handful of YouTube videos it thought I would like (based on my Google account history).
In addition to the puck-like Nexus Player, the devices box contained a power adapter and a slender, cheap-feeling, black remote controlyoull need to use your own HDMI cord, unfortunately. The remote has a handful of buttons, including a circular five-way directional button surrounding an enter button, another button for Googles voice search, and a button to get back to the main Nexus Player screen.
The simplicity makes it a cinch to figure out how to choose apps, videos, and the like, and I had no problem using the remote to zip from YouTube clips to Pandora to video games.
It has a few big problems, though. It lacks volume control, so youll have to keep a regular TV remote nearby. And I was dismayed to realize that some things still require the tedious one-letter-at-a-time username/password process common on so many systems that dont have a touch screen. This really slowed me down while setting up apps that require user accounts, like Netflix and Pandora.
The voice search button is the star of the remote. You can say obvious things like Zoolander to bring up the movie of that name, or get a little more complicated by asking for movies with a specific actor, from a certain genre, or nominated for an Oscar in, say, 2010. For the most part, voice search understood what I was saying, and it did yield some good results. It also seems to understand foreign movie titles, so long as you say them with an American accent; I figured this out while asking for Ma Vie en Rose.

WINDSOR Sixteen months ago Jamie McDonald lucked into finding a home for his dream barbecue restaurant.
Now he's about to have two of his own.
Bear's Smokehouse BBQ got it's start under the roof of Bart's Drive-In last June thanks to a chance meeting over chil dogs the previous fall.
McDonald, a world-ranked professional competitive eater, known as "The Bear," was at the Palisado Avenue eatery on the banks of the Farmington River for a chili-dog eating contest and got to talking with Bart's owner, Windsor Mayor Donald Trinks.
The two got to talking and one thing led to another and McDonald, a Kansas City native, opened under Bart's roof, joining the Beanery, which had moved there in 2008.
Business took off and seven months later McDonald announced plans to open on Arch Street in Hartford. They opened this summer and had lines out the door ever since.
But McDonald also wanted to have his own place in Windsor, partly because having three popular restaurants under one roof wasn't ideal for any of them and partly because he wanted to stay in Windsor, where he got his start.
"We outgrew Bart's in two months. I knew we would do good but it's better than I ever could have hoped for," McDonald said. Now he's about two weeks away as work continues on a new, 5,500 square-foot venue in the former Dale Drug Store at 2152Poquonock Ave.
"Without Windsor's support we wouldn't have two places," he said, adding that without Trinks' invitation to open at Bart's "this wouldn't have happened."
"He gave me that opportunity."

The final course has been served at two Vancouver restaurants that influenced the way we eat.
Raincity Grill, a pioneering locavore spot before the word was coined, was shuttered last week. C Restaurant, one of Canadas most famous seafood restaurants, closed last month. Both businesses were sold to Viaggio Hospitality (owners of Cibo, Uva and the Waldorf Hotel, among others), which plans to renovate and reopen them with new concepts and names.
Things do not always go as planned, Harry Kambolis, the former proprietor of both restaurants, said by text last Friday. Until then, he had insisted Raincity Grill was not for sale.
When Raincity Grill opened in 1992, it took the concept of showcasing fresh, local, high-quality ingredients into the mainstream. It was one of the first restaurants in Canada to name small, local farmers, foragers and fishermen on its menu. It featured long lists of Okanagan wines before they became trendy. It launched the 100-mile tasting menu, and was so dedicated to using ingredients grown locally that bartenders would not even garnish their martinis with lemon twists.
C Restaurant, which opened in 1997, became even more famous for featuring previously unavailable local seafood in a fine-dining venue. Fans of spot prawns can thank former executive chef Robert Clark for reclaiming for the local market the sweet delicacy, which was once all exported to Asia. He also championed sablefish, Dungeness crab and wild salmon, sourced sustainable fishermen and helped create Vancouver Aquariums Ocean Wise program.
It baffles and saddens me, Rob Clark said by phone last week. He left the restaurant group three years ago to open The Fish Counter, a sustainable seafood market and fast-food bistro. How can something unravel that quickly?
After Mr. Clark left, the restaurants began to have trouble.
He had some good chefs and I tried to support them, says Joe Salvo, president of Ponderosa Mushrooms, one of many small suppliers and farmers who stopped dealing with both restaurants and are still owed thousands of dollars. But it was like pulling teeth to get paid.
Mr. Kambolis said the unpaid bills were all part of restructuring, attributing his financial struggles to larger economic problems.
My story, if I was a writer, would be about the compromises weve all had to make since 2008 the year the markets and banks crashed and we all changed our spending habits.
