Darwen plumber rescues cat from under floorboards

    - November 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A DARWEN plumber steered a worried animal lover from a potential cat-astrophe after rescuing a pet from under the floorboards.

Daisy the cat had been missing for more than two days after worming her way under the floorboards of her owners home while they were having work done to the kitchen.

    MORE TOP STORIES:

And after hearing meowing noises coming from under the living room floorboards, they turned to plumbers at the Dyno-Rod franchise, Craven Services Ltd, in Vale Street after hearing of the firms previous success in rescue missions.

Lead plumber John Kelly used a thermal imaging camera to find Daisy, realising she could access various downstairs rooms from under the floorboards.

He removed the carpet and pulled up a floorboard then coaxed the cat out by dropping food into the void.

And once she appeared after 15 minutes, John was able to pluck Daisy from the underbelly of the house and bring her to safety.

John Kelly said: Once we got the call from the distressed customer, we knew we could help.

We got to work straight away and used a thermal imaging camera to look down the floorboards and help locate Daisy the cat. It took us about two hours to make the rescue and the customer was so relieved.

The franchise in the Vale Street Works is owned by Andrew Millar, James and Max Craven.

Pest control tech accused of bugging woman's home

    - November 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Red Oak man has been charged in connection with an investigation into audio recording devices found in a 29-year-old woman's home.

Officers were called to the woman's home Monday morning after she discovered the recording.

According to Red Oak police, a thorough search of the victim's home revealed a second device in the woman's bedroom. Authorities said the devices did not record video.

She told police the only person that would have had access to her room was a pest control technician.

Police said a search warrant was obtained for Aaron T. Johnson's home, which authorities said is also the location of RMPKA Pest Control Services.

Authorities said Red Oak police officers and Montgomery County sheriff's deputies found several items similar to those in the victim's residence. Also seized were numerous computers, hard drives and other electronic devices.

During the investigation, police said, it was learned that Johnson had previously been convicted of a felony and was in possession of numerous firearms and ammunition, which were also seized.

Johnson, 38, of Red Oak, was charged with electronic and/or mechanical eavesdropping, a serious misdemeanor, and felon in possession of a firearm, which is a Class D felony.

Johnson was being held at the Montgomery County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond.

Researchers target mice, roaches as causes of asthma

    - November 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Asthma relief might be as simple as ridding the house of roaches and mice.

Researchers from the city Health Department and Montefiore Medical Center are recruiting low-income Bronx children with the respiratory ailment for a new study to test if pest control could deter asthma.

Roughly 103,654 Bronxites suffer from the ailment, according to a state controller report released earlier this year.

It was the leading cause of emergency room visits at North Central Bronx Hospital in 2013, records show.

Cockroach droppings and mice urine most common in the Bronx than any other borough become airborne dust that can trigger an attack, experts say.

Indoor conditions go a long way in showing why a kid with asthma in the Upper East Side is far less likely to go to the hospital than a kid in the south Bronx, said Dan Kass, the Health Departments deputy city commissioner for environmental health.

Researchers hope the result will convince health insurers to cover pest control as a way to save more money in the long run.

Were trying to convince the healthcare system that pest control should be a prescription, just like a medicine, Kass said.

The study seeks children aged 5-12 who suffer from asthma and live in a home with roaches and mice.

Families should call (646) 632-6304 to find out if they qualify.

First Look: Gypsy Kitchen, Buckhead Atlanta

    - November 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Another new concept from the team behind Tin Lizzys, Big Ketch and Miltons, Gypsy Kitchen draws inspiration from regional Spanish, Moroccan and Indian food, in an upscale atmosphere in synch with the new Buckhead Atlanta development.

The look: Located on the second floor above Shake Shack and Peachtree Road, wrap-around patio doors open to sweeping skyline views of Buckhead. Inside, the centerpiece of the spacious bar area is an imposing metal sculpture of a bullish bull. Jumbled stacks of vintage suitcases pay tribute to the many influences on Spanish cooking, and Moorish tiles and cut metal lighting evoke the gypsy theme.

The scene: Early one recent chilly evening, the sunset cast a dramatic glow over the bull and the bar, where every seat was filled with diners sipping cocktails and wine and sharing small plates. The dining room was more sparsely populated by a few larger parties, and the patio was understandably empty.

The food: The menu is divided between sizes and price points, with snacks, appetizers, sharing plates and plates for the table that top out with a 32-ounce bone-in strip steak ($85) and a 20-ounce barrel-cut beef tenderloin ($95). The sweet spot for most diners seems to be the tapas-style apps and small plates. Among them, garlic shrimp with pickled chorizo, olive oil-poached yolk and crispy potatoes ($12), lamb kifta tagine with hen egg, Moroccan spices and fresh herbs ($12), and serrano-wrapped North Carolina trout with fennel-olive salad ($24).

The drinks: House cocktails include Leather & Silk with gin, chartreuse, Velvet Falernum and lime ($10), and Around the Fire with mezcal, Cherry Heering, sherry, citrus and bitters ($11). From cava to Bordeaux, there are 20 or so mostly Old World wines by the glass priced in the $8-$15 range.

The extras: For dessert ($8), look for the likes of dark chocolate pistachio cake and spiced apple empanadas, along with a selection of amaro and sherry ($8-$17).

Fresh Coat Painters Paints Cindy McNallys Home to Say Thank You

    - November 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Leander, TX (PRWEB) November 04, 2014

When youre a giver like Cindy McNally, it can be hard to accept gifts from others. So when Fresh Coat Painters offered to paint her entire house for free as part of their Paint it Forward project, turning over the reins was a bit of a challenge.

I was humbled by the offer and the whole process has been an exercise in humility. Veterans are givers by nature, even willing to give their lives. Allowing others to be a blessing to me has been huge, McNally said. But truly, with everything Im involved in, theres no way I would have the time to do all this work on my own and I dont have the time to work to earn the money to pay someone else to do it. This has given me the opportunity to improve my home while working to help others.

The interior and exterior of McNallys home was part of Fresh Coat Painters' national Paint it Forward project. The painting was led locally by local North Austin Fresh Coat Painters franchise owner Karen Wagner. Sherwin Williams, Fresh Coat Painters national paint partner, donated the paint for the project.

Of the submissions to receive the whole house painting, Cindy was selected as the winner and she definitely deserves it. Cindy is extremely giving and passionate about what she does and this is our opportunity to give back and say thank you, Wagner said.

Painting this home for Cindy has been an incredible experience. It feels great to be able to give back to someone who served our country, who is a Blue Star Mother and who does so much for the veteran community. I hope to stay in touch and get more involved with her efforts in the future, she added.

Fresh Coat Painters is a leading residential and commercial painting company with a focus on customer service and professionalism. The company offers professional residential and commercial painting services including interior and exterior painting, wood staining and refinishing, wallpaper removal and many other services for nearly every protective coating application. They use quality, environmentally safe materials and offer a live 24/7 customer service center, online scheduling and free detailed quotes. All Fresh Coat employees are insured, trained and background checked.

Wagner opened Fresh Coat Painters North Austin in the spring of 2012 after 18 years at Dell. The local business serves Cedar Park, Leander, Round Rock, North Austin and the surrounding communities.

When my sons graduated high school, it was time for a career change. I wanted to open my own business and I was impressed and continue to be impressed with the Fresh Coat Painters franchise. The last two years have been great and this community is a wonderful one to be part of. I absolutely enjoy meeting with clients and getting to know the people who live in the area as well as getting to know the area itself more fully. Its all just very rewarding, Wagner said.

Sherwin Williams was thrilled to be involved with the project.
