Maple Ridge Leisure Centre needs $5-million upgrade

    - November 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

It was a showcase three decades ago, but now the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre is leaking water and staff dont know where its going, only that it needs to be stopped.

Otherwise, with water leaking from the pipes beneath the swimming pool decks, the ground could become soaked and the pool could weaken.

That problem can be fixed as part of $5.5-million refit and repair, if council gives the go ahead next week to start design work.

Mostly, what were talking about is under the pool deck, mechanical, pool filtration, plumbing, said parks and recreation general manager Kelly Swift.

The problems were listed in July and on Monday staff will sketch out a work and design plan to fix that, among other problems at the centre.

In addition to leaky pipes, filtration and mechanical systems need work.

For example, the 35-year-old filters that keep the pool water clean cant keep up with the number of people using the pool. And when they break down, replacement parts have to be custom made, which is costly.

When it comes to sanitizing the water, a new treatment system is needed, instead of the chlorine gas used now, which has leaked and resulted in evacuations of the pool.

Once the pipes are repaired and the leakage of significant volumes of treated, heated and chlorinated water is stopped, energy costs will be saved.

No timeline has been set for the renovations, which will require the pools to shut down so the decks can be dug up and pipes replaced.

Home appliance – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    - November 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Home appliance

Numerous appliances are found in the kitchen

Home appliances are electrical/mechanical machines which accomplish some household functions, such as cooking or cleaning. Home appliances can be classified into:

This division is also noticeable in the maintenance and repair of these kinds of products. Brown goods usually require high technical knowledge and skills (which get more complex with time, such as going from a soldering iron to a hot-air soldering station), while white goods may need more practical skills and "brute force" to manipulate the devices and heavy tools required to repair them.

Given a broad usage, the domestic application attached to "home appliance" is tied to the definition of appliance as "An instrument or device designed for a particular use or function.".[1] More specifically, Collins dictionary defines "Home appliance" as: "devices or machines, usually electrical, that are in your home and which you use to do jobs such as cleaning or cooking."[2] The broad usage, afforded to the definition allows for nearly any device intended for domestic use to be a home appliance, including consumer electronics as well as stoves, refrigerators, toasters, air conditioners to light bulbs and well pumps.[3][4]

Google's Ngram viewer shows that published usage of "home appliance" showed increasing usage from the 1930s to 1950s before slightly decreasing throughout the 1960s. The 1970s saw a large surge in use that varied throughout the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, but otherwise remained relatively steady into 2010.[5]

While many appliances have existed for centuries, the self-contained electric or gas powered appliances are a uniquely American innovation that emerged in the twentieth century. The development of these appliances is tied the disappearance of full-time domestic servants and to reduce the time consuming activities in pursuit of more recreational time. In the early 1900s, electric and gas appliances included clothes washers, water heaters and refrigerators and sewing machines. Post-World War II, the domestic use of dishwashers, and clothes dryers where part of a shift for convenience. As discretionary spending increased, it was reflected by a rise in miscellaneous home appliances.[6]

In America during the 1980s, the industry shipped $1.5 billion worth of goods each year and employed over 14,000 workers, with revenues doubling between 1982 and 1990 to $3.3 billion. Throughout this period companies merged and acquired one another to reduce research and production costs and eliminate competitors, resulting in anti-trust legislation. The United States Department of Energy passed the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act in 1987 which set energy standards that required manufacturers to reduce the energy consumption of the appliances by 25% every five years.[6]

In 1987, home appliances the energy efficient standards helped every household save $2000 each or a total of $200 billion nationwide with the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act.[citation needed]

In the 1990s, the appliance industry was very consolidated with over 90% of the products being sold by just five companies. For example, in 1991, dishwasher manufacturing market share was split between General Electric with 40% market share, Whirlpool with 31% market share, Electrolux with 20% market share, Maytag with 8% market share and Thermador with just 1% of market share.[6]

Owner talks about state-financed work on Meriden apartment building

    - November 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: November 2, 2014 | Last Modified: November 2, 2014 01:01AM

    By Molly Callahan Record-Journal staff

MERIDEN Through a combination of bonds and tax credits from state agencies, Charles Place apartments will receive extensive improvements, according to building owner Bill Collins.

Were renovating from the roof all the way down, Collins said.

The former mill buildings at 122 Charles St. sit on 4.38 acres. The work will be paid for by $4.9 million in bonds from the state Department of Housing and the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority and the proceeds from $3.4 million in housing tax credits.

The funds are part of more than $100 million available for affordable housing through an application-based process.

With funding being sourced from various state agencies, its kind of like taking this puzzle and bringing to bear as many different resources as possible to solve it, said Lisa Kitter, director of communications for CHFA.

Charles Place includes 80 apartments at 25-, 50-, and 60 percent of the area median income.

Though no new units will be added, at least two will be designated for homeless veterans with services provided by the Veterans Administration of West Haven.

Collins said the complex is in need of updates and renovation; an issue brought to light in January, when the wall collapsed in the back of an East Main Street apartment building.
