SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) - Theyre used to doing the drawings for projects, but last summer, Spearfish architects Andy and Shauntel Fett had the chance to take a design through the construction process. They created a rammed earth bench that won a merit award from the South Dakota chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for its sustainable design and materials.
We draw it; we dont build it, Shauntel said of what the couple, both of whom work at Williams and Associates, is used to doing. However, both were interested in a building material called rammed earth that they had learned about in architecture school, but they didnt think it was feasible in a cold climate. When Andy was returning from a conference in Denver, however, he saw a rammed earth building in Wyoming, the Black Hills Pioneer (http://bit.ly/1tGOUAX ) reported.
Then we started investigating it more and messing around with it and decided that we wanted to do something with it, he said.
They started researching and designing, using sustainable building methods and materials. One thing that drew them to the method was the fact that it uses less concrete and looks a little more natural, and they thought it would be neat to build something usable near a hiking trail or path in their community.
A bench was an approachable size for just the two of us building something, Shauntel said of their final decision.
They approached Cheryl Johnson, Spearfishs public works administrator, about the possibility of placing the sculptural bench, pro bono, on city land.
I was really encouraged when they brought the idea to us, Johnson said, adding that it gave the city the chance to place a bench in a space it may not normally consider.
The Fetts had prepared a plan and design that they presented, and the conversation turned to placing the bench near the trail to the Thoen Stone monument, above the Lookout Amphitheater on Meier Avenue.
I really think it suits some of the new things this community is out there trying, Johnson said of the bench design, adding that lately, more people are coming forward with unique ideas to complement the community and natural environment.
The city authorized the Fetts to place the bench on the space, and they started the work, putting in many hours every weekend. There is no water or electricity on or near the location, so they had to haul water and do all the work by hand.
Consented Auckland housing and retail development land goes on the market for sale
A greenfield mixed-use development site in the heart of the Silverdale retail and community services complex on Aucklands northern boundary has been placed on the market for sale.
The 1.034 hectare site is bordered by the Northern Arena indoor swimming pool complex on one side, and Silverdale Shopping Centre on the other with a slip-road to the Millwater Parkway access road on its remaining boundary.
The land is already consented for the development of 31 terraced houses and two apartment buildings, as well as a mixed use block, and is being sold through an international tender process by Bayleys Real Estate, with offers being taken until October 15.
Bayleys international sales team leader James Chan said phase one of the consent was for construction of five blocks of triple-storey three and four bedroom townhouses with projected sales values upwards of $559,000. Each unit will have two car parks along with its own private open space. The development has been named The Rise.
While all five residential blocks contain units based on a standard design format, a variety of building materials and architectural treatments have been chosen for use across the development to create visual interest, he said.
Phase two is two apartment buildings with food and beverage and retail outlets operating at ground level around an open plaza, and some 42 apartments in the three storeys above. Parking for these apartments would be underneath the building and accessed by a ramp, said Mr Chan.
Then on the corner of the land, there is enough space for further retail space with residential units above.
Comprehensive plans have already been drawn up for the proposed housing complex, and Mr Chan said these were included in the sale offering.
Mr Chan said the freehold land and its consent supported the aims of the Auckland Unitary Plan for the establishment of more intensive housing zones located immediately adjacent to social infrastructure and within easy reach of public transport.

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Restoration House of East Tennessee is working on The Village, a community development project withtransitional housing for single-mother families in Knoxville.
To help make the community a reality, theyhave raised $2.2 million, but still need $250,000 more over the next six months.
Daniel Watson, Executive Director, says phase 1 is currently under construction, which includes six units, the complex office and a community center. Once complete, the new village will house 24 units.
He says The Restoration House gets 21 referrals on average each month, but can only handle 5 families at a time. According to Watson, The Village will increase capacity by 500 percent, while reducing cost per family by 49 percent.
The Restoration House provides low-income single mothers and their children with transitional housing in a 2-year self-sufficiency program. Services include team mentoring and family advocacy. It is funded by private donations.

Oct. 6 (BusinessDesk) - The biggest winner in todays new Cabinet line-up from Prime Minister John Key is Simon Bridges, who moves from 18th to ninth in the rankings and picks up the politically important transport portfolio from Gerry Brownlee.
Returning to the environment portfolio, previously held by Amy Adams, is Nick Smith, signalling a softening in the governments intended reforms to the Resource Management Act, while Adams picks up the justice portfolio ranking from Judith Collins, who resigned during the election campaign.
Collins has no way back to the Cabinet until after an inquiry into the actions that led to her departure two weeks out from the Sept. 20 election.
Paula Bennett, tipped as a potential replacement to Prime Minister John Key, moves from ninth to fifth ranking, ceding her social development portfolio to Anne Tolley, whose previous police and corrections portfolios are divided between Michael Woodhouse and Peseta Sam Lotu-Iga, who was promoted into Cabinet.
Bennett also becomes Associate Minister of Tourism, effectively making her under-study to Key, who retains primary responsibility for tourism.
Two new threads of focus are the way portfolios relating to housing and the security and intelligence services.
Finance Minister Bill English will become Minister in charge of Housing New Zealand, while Bennett will take the new social housing portfolio, and Smith will be Minister of Housing. This triumvirate will become responsible for major reforms already under way to make state housing provision more efficient and competitive, with greater provision by non-profit social housing organisations.
Also in their sights will be ongoing progress to improve the availability of urban land for housing to ease house price pressures.
Bridges retains the energy and resources portfolio and becomes deputy leader of the House, supporting Brownlee, who keeps his third-place ranking in the Cabinet, retaining responsibility for recovery from the Canterbury earthquakes and picks up the defence portfolio.

The Governments beleaguered inquiry into historic child abuse could be ordered to start work without a chairman following Fiona Woolfs dramatic resignation last week, William Hague said today.
Mrs Woolf stood down on Friday after victims unanimously attacked her appointment over her links to the Tory peer Leon Brittan, who is accused of failing to act on a dossier of child abuse allegations as Home Secretary in the 1980s.
Her resignation came after the first choice to head up the inquiry, Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, quit the role in July because he late brother Michael Havers was Attorney General in Margaret Thatchers government.

When Jim Murphy announced that he was standing for the Scottish Labour leadership, and was swiftly installed as the favourite, it was clear that he would have to resign from the shadow cabinet. That is what he has done today, tellingPienaar's Politics: "I want to dedicate myself full-time to changing Scotland and changing the Scottish Labour Party.
"It's difficult to do that and to serve in the shadow cabinet, and therefore after talking to Ed Miliband over the past couple of days I've decided to stand down from the shadow cabinet."
It is doubtful that he leaves with much sadness. After being demoted from shadow defence secretary to shadow international development secretary in the last reshuffle, following his criticism of Miliband's stance on Syria, and being excluded from the election strategy group,he felt that his talents were being under-used.
Attention will now move to Murphy's likely replacement. One possibility suggested to me by several Labour sources isforMargaret Curran, the current shadow Scottish secretary, to fill Murphy's place with Glasgow Central MP Anas Sarwar, who resigned as Scottish Labour deputy leader earlier this week, taking her brief. But such a move would not impress development NGOs, who I'm told are angered by Miliband's use of the post as a consolation prize. They are feeling increasingly neglected by the Labour leader, who rarely mentions development issues and who has made few foreign trips.
If he wants to assuage their concerns, Miliband could promote the current shadow international development ministerAlison McGovern, who is well liked by the sector and is one of the most impressive of the 2010 intake. The promotion of McGovern would also put Miliband closer to achieving his ambition for women to hold 50 per cent of posts in his shadow cabinet (which, as I revealed over the summer, he is keen to meet before the end of the parliament). Another possible candidate mentioned by several sources isLuciana Berger,who has impressed since being shadow public health minister in 2013.
