When is it Time to Call the Pros After a DIY Home Renovation Goes Wrong? – Alberta Prime Times

    - December 11, 2023 by Mr HomeBuilder

Embarking on a DIY home renovation project can be a thrilling and rewarding experience. However, what happens when your DIY dreams turn into a nightmare of misplaced tiles, uneven paint, or faulty electrical wiring?

It's essential to recognize when it's time to swallow your pride and call in the professionals to salvage your home improvement endeavours.

If your DIY project involves structural changes to your home, such as removing walls, altering support beams, or tinkering with the foundation, it's crucial to tread carefully. Structural mistakes can compromise the integrity of your home and pose serious safety risks. If you notice cracks, shifts, or other signs of structural damage, it's time to call a professional contractor or structural engineer to assess and rectify the issue.

Plumbing and electrical work demand precision and expertise. Incorrectly installed pipes or faulty wiring can lead to leaks, electrical fires, or other hazardous situations. If you find yourself knee-deep in plumbing problems or dealing with flickering lights and tripped circuits, it's wise to call in licensed plumbers or electricians who can address the issues safely and effectively.

Visible mistakes in finishes, such as uneven paint, poorly installed tiles, or misaligned cabinetry, can significantly diminish the aesthetic appeal of your home. Rather than living with a subpar result, consider bringing in professionals who specialize in the specific area of concern. A skilled painter, tile installer, or carpenter can rectify the mistakes and give your project the polished finish it deserves.

While DIY enthusiasts are admirable, it's essential to recognize your limits. If a project has spiralled out of control or requires skills and tools beyond your expertise, it's time to call for professional help. Whether it's intricate carpentry, complex plumbing, or advanced electrical work, relying on the experience of professionals ensures the job is done right the first time.

DIY projects can be time-consuming, and unexpected challenges may further delay your timeline. If your home renovation is dragging on, causing inconvenience, or jeopardizing your daily life, it may be time to bring in professionals who can expedite the process without compromising quality.

If your DIY project involves the removal of hazardous materials like asbestos or lead-based paint, it's crucial to prioritize health and safety. Professional abatement services are equipped to handle such materials safely, protecting both you and your family from potential health risks.

Knowing when to call in the professionals is a crucial aspect of any DIY home renovation. While the sense of accomplishment that comes with completing a project on your own is unparalleled, recognizing your limitations and seeking professional assistance when needed ensures that your home remains a safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing space for years to come. When DIY dreams turn into DIY disasters, don't hesitate to reach out to the experts who can turn things around.

NC man accused of taking money for home renovations, not completing work – Yahoo News

    - December 11, 2023 by Mr HomeBuilder

A man in Lincoln County is accused of taking tens of thousands of dollars for home renovation projects but never performing the work.

Sheriffs deputies said theyre investigating cases in Catawba, Caldwell, Iredell, and Alexander counties, as well as Carter County, Tennessee.

Investigators told Channel 9s Dave Faherty that Jeffrey Maier with 8 Home Enhancements was able to gain the trust of one set of homeowners when he talked about his faith.

ALSO READ: More families say contractor didnt finish work despite being paid thousands

Tom Parker told Faherty its been more than eight months and so far, no renovation work has been done at his Alexander County home. Parker showed Faherty a sketch for the addition on his home. The Vietnam War veteran said he hired Maier to do the work so he would have room for his home dialysis equipment.

He had the Jesus hat and the Jesus shirt. Knew all the words, knew exactly what to say to us because me and my wife are strong Christians, Parker said. We handed over the check to get this going.

That was back in April. But Parker said so far, no work has been done.

Parker isnt alone. Faherty spoke with a homeowner in Caldwell County who said hes out nearly $10,000 for a bathroom renovation. In that case, deputies said they learned Maier was going by the name Kyle Moore and was working without a contractors license.

Another homeowner in Catawba County, who asked Faherty not show his face, says he is out more than $30,000 for a kitchen and bathroom renovation.

He would say hes busy doing work up in Alaska or Tennessee. He would be working on charitable construction projects, he said.

Sheriffs deputies in Iredell, Caldwell and Alexander counties have charged Maier with obtaining property by false pretenses. He is also facing a similar charge in Tennessee.

Faherty spoke with Maier by phone Wednesday afternoon. He said after an office manager was fired, he lost access to his work files.

Were going to get the work done. Thats a fact, Maier told Faherty. The last thing I want to do -- and if you deliberately do stuff youll go to Hell -- and thats the last thing I want to end up.

Parker said hes out tens of thousands of dollars. He said he came forward to keep others from being hurt.

Yes it embarrasses me, he said. But not enough that Im going to hold it back and not let my neighbors know whats going on around here.

Maier also told Faherty hes received five-star reviews in the past. Faherty checked with the Better Business Bureau and his business, 8 Home Enhancements, got an F rating.

Here’s How Long You Can Expect Your Lawn’s Weed-Killer Treatment To Last – House Digest

    - December 11, 2023 by Mr HomeBuilder

When you're dealing with pre-emergent herbicides, it's all about getting the timing and application just right. North Carolina State University has some solid advice on this: Mix your chosen product into the soil through either rainfall or manual irrigation. This approach ensures that the herbicide spreads evenly across your lawn, setting up a formidable defense against those pesky weed seeds. But here's the catch: These herbicides are only effective before the seeds start their growth journey. So, your window for action is right before germination kicks in. After applying, you need to monitor the effectiveness of the herbicide. Try to reapply the product before its strength dwindles below the level required to keep the weeds at bay.

When applying pre-emergent herbicides, there are several key considerations. First and foremost, adhere strictly to the manufacturer's instructions. This guidance is not just regulatory it's your blueprint for effective application. Choose a product that targets the specific weeds you're combating. You've got some noteworthy options. The university rates oryzalin as a top choice, especially for woody plants. Prodiamine is another heavy hitter, but it might be too strong on herbaceous plants. If crabgrass is your nemesis, dithiopyr offers both pre-emergent control and early post-emergent action.

Best Lawn Care Software 2023: Pros, Cons, Prices and More – Tech.co

    - December 11, 2023 by Mr HomeBuilder

When we say that ServSuite just missed the top spot, we mean it. ServSuite offers many of the same features as Housecall Pro, plus has slightly better customer support and training than Housecall, proving 24/6 coverage, which is the best we've found across any industry.

ServSuite also offer the ServSuite university, which provides 8 hours of live, interactive training to get you confident with every feature and setting.

The biggest hit against ServSuite, that took it out of the top spot, is its mobile app. With exceedingly low scores on the App Store and Play Store, reviewers complain of extremely slow speeds and malfunctioning features. Suffice it to say, we'd recommend sticking to other options if mobile functionality is important to you. It also doesn't offer offline functionality.

Since being acquired by ServiceTitan in 2021, and merged with FieldRoutes in 2022, ServSuite no longer publicly details the prices of its plans. However, it previously offered three different pricing plans, Starter, Plus, and Pro, which were a bit more expensive than Housecall Pro.

The Starter plan was $126 per month, the Plus plan was $186 per month, and the Pro plan was a whopping $339 per month. It's unclear how these prices may have increased or decreased, more recently, and prices likely depend on you getting a custom quote for your exact needs. There is no free plan nor a free trial, but you can get a free demo to see what the platform can do before you buy.

Cape Hatteras Secondary School decks the halls with Christmas tree project – Island Free Press

    - December 11, 2023 by Mr HomeBuilder

Photo from Keith Durham of CHSS

On Friday, December 1, the foyer at Cape Hatteras Secondary School (CHSS) was transformed into a winter wonderland for a few hours, thanks to a team effort by students and staff.

In a school-wide community service project, teachers and students in different departments decorated trees for the holiday season, beginning on Tuesday, November 28, and culminating on December 1.

Eleven fully decorated trees appeared one by one on Friday morning around the perimeter of the CHSS main foyer. The creativity of the CHSS students was on display with ornaments ranging from store-bought garland and ornaments, to handmade paper, wooden, and painted ornaments, to handmade paper garland and even hand-strung popcorn garland.

Students and staff voted for their favorite tree during their lunches on Friday, and at the end of the day, the tree decorated by the CHSS Band (tree #1) was the winning tree garnering over 20% of the total votes cast.

The band tree will remain at CHSS for the remainder of the holidays while the other trees are already moving on to their new homes.

On Sunday and Monday, with the help of Cape Hatteras Baptist Church, Buxton United Methodist Church, and Hatteras Island Meals, the other 10 trees are brightening the homes and lives of Hatteras Island residents who might not have been able to have a tree to celebrate the season.

It is our wish that this project helps make the holidays brighter for some of our friends and neighbors, said CHSS Coach Keith Durham in an announcement about the project. It also shows our students the real value in giving back and helping others.

A special thank you to everyone at CHSS that participated and made this possible [and] huge thanks go to Ashley Mihovich at Dollar General in Buxton for working above and beyond to get the trees for us in a timely manner.

Teachers and students are already talking about doing this project again next year and what we can do to improve it.

Below Deck Mediterranean: Luka Brunton Wasn’t Ready For The Bosun Role (Is Captain Sandy Regretting Her … – Screen Rant

    - December 11, 2023 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Summary

Luka Brunton from Below Deck Mediterranean is too inexperienced to be a bosun, and that's become evident recently. Luka was promoted to bosun during Below Deck Mediterranean season 8 after former bosun Ruan Irving forged his legal documents. This led Captain Sandy Yawn to fire Ruan and find a replacement for the role. She looked at her crew and picked Luka to be the provisional bosun. She then promoted him to the full-time bosun as she felt Luke could do the job.

Lukas journey as the bosun started great. However, his lack of experience began to show in the later episodes, leading to unexpected drama. In one episode, the New Zealand native messed up while carrying kayaks with Captain Sandy. He kept talking and distracting the captain, which led her to fall, sustaining a wrist injury. In a later episode, Captain Sandy questioned him for poorly planning the teams schedule. He hadnt been properly using his team members, which pushed Sandy to admit she wasnt happy with his performance.

One of Lukas biggest problems is that hes just too nice to be bosun. Like any senior role, being a yachts bosun means managing people. It is less about doing the physical labor yourself and more about using the team right so everything is functional. Since Luka has less experience and was previously a deckhand on Below Deck Down Under, he just doesnt know how to use the team correctly. He often sends his crew out to chill or relax in their cabins while trying to handle all the work alone, leading to issues in the team.

Lukas next big issue is his communication skills or lack thereof. All managers must report to their seniors and maintain complete transparency and visibility. In comparison, Luka doesnt understand his new bosun role well and fails to maintain communication with Captain Sandy and the chief steward. In a previous episode, Luka allowed deckhands Haleigh Gorman, Lara Du Preez, and Max Salvador to go on breaks randomly. Similarly, he let other junior crew return to their cabins, which meant Chief Stew Tumi Mhlongo had nobody to help her during the dinner service.

Captain Sandys reaction in the previous episode proves she regrets promoting Luka. She told the cameras that her new bosun was making her mad and had to remind him of his responsibilities. She claimed Luka knew her expectations, adding that he had done an amazing job but also saw his mistakes. Maybe someone like lead deckhand Lara can help Luka by becoming the yachts bosun. She has already supported Luka and may be a better fit for the role. Maybe the two Below Deck Mediterranean cast members should swap positions, as Luka is a great lead deckhand.

Below Deck Mediterranean airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EST on Bravo.

Devin Haney vs Regis Prograis live results: Haney decks and dominates Prograis to shutout decision in boxing … – Sporting News

    - December 11, 2023 by Mr HomeBuilder

Devin Haney told anyone who would listen that he would dominate Regis Prograis and he did just that on Saturday, winning every single round en route to a masterclass 12-round unanimous decision win that saw him lift the WBC super lightweight title at the Chase Center in San Francisco. All three judges scored the bout 120-107.

WATCH:Devin Haney vs. Regis Prograis, live on DAZN

Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) is now a two-division world champion and he turned in a punch-perfect display. The 25-year-old technician decked Prograis with a rapier right hand and did whatever he wanted from beginning to end. Prograis had no answers against a younger, quicker, and more skilled opponent.

I did everything that I said I was gonna do, said a jubilant Prograis during his post-fight interview with DAZN. I went in there and I handicapped him. We knew he was gonna come in with the big left hand. My dad came up with a tremendous game plan, along with my team.

The jab was effective from the opening round, but Haney layered his offence throughout and kept the champion guessing. The left hook to the body worked wonders as did a sharp right lead. Whenever Prograis tried to up the pace, Haney countered accurately and drifted off to the sides. It was no contest from beginning to end.

Fight fans have lauded the performances of Terence Crawford and Naoya Inoue, who scored stoppage wins over Errol Spence Jr. and Stephen Fulton respectively. You can add this one to the list. This was as clinical and as dominant a boxing display as one could ever hope to see.

Having struggled to make 135 pounds for a couple of years, Haney, the former undisputed lightweight champion looked like a different fighter at super lightweight.

[The move up in weight] made a tremendous difference, confirmed Haney. You see the difference from the [Vasiliy] Lomachenko fight. I felt so much stronger. In this camp I was able to recover and relax more, take some off days, and I felt great at 140. Me and my dad have been talking about moving to 147 to see how I fit in there, but right now, Im the champion at 140 and well see whats next.

The 34-year-old Prograis drops to 29-2 (24 KOs).

The Sporting News covered the entire card and provided round-by-round updates on the main event:

Round 12: Nothing changes. Haney controls distance. Haney controls the pace. Haney controls Regis Prograis. A masterful performance from the San Francisco-born star, who is now a two-division world champion and takes his reputation to new heights.

SN Unofficial Scorecards: 10-9 Haney (120-107 Haney)

Round 11: Another desperation left from Prograis misses wildly. A couple of decent shots from the champ at ring center, but Haney shakes them off. Left hook to the body lands for Haney, who is doing all this in second gear. Beautiful right lead from Haney, who ducks the follow-up assault.

SN Unofficial Scorecard:10-9 Haney (110-98 Haney)

Round 10: Haney boxing and moving, easily winning another round. A Prograis left hand cuts a hole through the night air and Haney escapes effortlessly. Luckily for Prograis, Haney seems to be taking a round off. A right hook lands flush for Haney in the closing seconds of the round.

SN Unofficial Scorecard: 10-9 Haney (100-89 Haney)

Round 9: Brief pause in the action as Haney gets a shoe problem addressed. Normal service resumes: jab doubles and triples into the face of Prograis. Big shot rocks Prograis once more. This fight might be stopped due to the champ being outclassed. It's uncomfortable to watch now.

SN Unofficial Scorecard: 10-9 Haney (90-80 Haney)

Round 8:Prograis mesmerized and being caught consistently on the counter. The jab pounds into the champ's face. Without exaggeration, we're through eight rounds and Prograis has not scored with a meaningful punch.

SN Unofficial Scorecard: 10-9 Haney (80-71 Haney)

Round 7: Anemic output from Prograis, who is handcuffed and has no answers. Thumping single shots from Haney. Body attack is now very effective from Haney. This is an incredible performance to this point. Doctor looking over Prograis between rounds.

SN Unofficial Scorecard: 10-9 Haney (70-62 Haney)

Round 6: Haney scoring when he wants, where he wants, and with what he wants. Prograis being countered for fun and thoroughly dominated. Massive right rocks Prograis. Counter left hook scores for Haney, who then pops Prograis with the jab. Prograis bleeding heavily from the nose.

SN Unofficial Scorecard: 10-9 Haney (60-53 Haney)

Round 5: It's going from bad to worse for Prograis, who is being tuned up. The jab is scoring well for Haney and he's targeting the body with the left hook. Prograis is now in the horrible position of looking and not even responding. If that doesn't change, he's going to absorb a lot of punishment. Beautiful right from Haney. Three-punch combo scores for the challenger. It's easy work right now.

SN Unofficial Scorecard: 10-9 Haney (50-44 Haney)

Round 4: Visible swelling around the eyes of Prograis. There's no way the champion can win at long distance. The jab now working like a charm for Haney, who is controlling everything right now. Superb one-two from Haney. We're four rounds down and "The Dream" is living the dream.

SN Unofficial Scorecard: 10-9 Haney (40-35 Haney)

Round 3: PROGRAIS DOWN from a sharp right hand in the opening minute. That was a beautiful shot. The champ is up quickly, but he needs to change the flow in a hurry. Haney to the body now with the right hand. Haney nails Prograis with a counter left hook off the right jab. BIG ROUND from Haney.

SN Unofficial Scorecard: 10-8 Haney (30-26 Haney)

Round 2:Prograis opens well with a body attack. Nice counter right hook inside from Haney. Prograis loads up and is caught on the counter with a two-piece. Clean right uppercut from Haney. Superb distance control from Haney. Prograis pushed down and the referee cleaned off the gloves.

SN Unofficial Scorecard: 10-9 Haney (20-18 Haney)

Round 1: Jab exchanges at ring center. Right cross from Haney was sharp. Prograis responds with a left to the body. The slow pace suits Haney. Not a lot in the opening round, but a slight edge to the challenger.

    SN Unofficial Scorecard: 10-9 Haney

03:42 a.m. GMT/ 10:42 p.m. ET: We will now be switching to round-by-round coverage for tonights superfight between reigning WBC super lightweight champ Regis Prograis and former undisputed lightweight king Devin Haney.

03:28 a.m. GMT/ 10:28 p.m. ET: Another UPSET as Paro floors Love twice and secures the finish in Round 6. A left uppercut decks Love at ring center and then a straight left puts him over again seconds later. Paro does the right thing and uses furious fists to convince the referee to stop the bout. The official time is 1:49.

02:54 a.m. GMT/ 09:54 p.m. ET:In the final undercard bout at the Chase Center, we have a battle of highly-touted super lightweights. Sharpshooter Montana Love suffered the first loss of his professional career via DQ when he threw Australian Steve Spark over the top rope last November.
