Carbon monoxide alarm credited with saving family's life

    - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

TEMPLE - Firefighters are crediting a carbon monoxide alarm with saving a Temple family's life Wednesday.

Temple Fire & Rescue were called to a home in South Temple Wednesday, October 29, shortly after 7:30 p.m., after a carbon monoxide alarm went off. Responding units found the family of five safely outside their home.

Fire officials say the family had used their gas range earlier in the day to prepare dinner. About an hour later, the alarm activated, and the family immediately went outside and called 911.

Firefighters noticed increased levels of carbon monoxide while monitoring the area, and found the source of the gas was the faulty natural gas range in the kitchen.

After turning the range off and ventilating the house, fire crews later detected zero levels of the gas.

Temple Fire & Rescue, along with other safety organizations, offer the following tips to keep your family safe:

Have your heating system, water heater and any other gas, oil, or coal burning appliances serviced by a qualified technician every year.

Do not use portable flameless chemical heaters (catalytic) indoors. Although these heaters don't have a flame, they burn gas and can cause CO to build up inside your home, cabin, or camper.

Install a battery-operated or battery back-up CO detector in your home and check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall.

New books: The Gardener's Garden and Garden Design Close Up celebrate hundreds of horticultural endeavours

    - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Shingle bed: The garden of the late Derek Jarman in Kent warrants inclusion in two new books, The Gardener's Garden and Garden Design Close Up.

Imminent closure of Open Gardens Australia notwithstanding, our appetite for perusing what people do in their gardens shows no sign of abating. While every garden visitor knows that nothing beats poking around people's roses and rills in the flesh, two newly published books let us sample vicariously, at least hundreds of gardens all over the world.

The voluminous The Gardener's Garden was launched this week and provides a horticultural compendium of gardens fashioned (and, just as importantly, preserved) over centuries in Finnish forests, Iranian deserts, New York City rooftops, everywhere really.

It profiles 250 landscapes that date from the 14th century to the present and while the style, planting and climatic conditions are outlined for each, it mostly conveys the gardens' allure through pictures. Photographs have Patrick Blanc walls looking like mountains and 18th-century Russian palaces depicted in all their gilded, folly-filled grandeur.

The Marrakesh expression: Jacques Marjorelle's Morocco garden is also profiled in the new books.

Stretching to almost 500 pages and weighing close to four kilos, this is no portable proposition, however. In the smaller, and consequently more negotiable, Garden Design Close Up, published in September, English writer Emma Reuss narrows the number of "exceptional gardens" to 100 and almost halves the page size.

Reuss takes gardens the outdoor space attached to a penthouse in Hanover, for instance and distils critical "design ingredients". So for the German courtyard (almost identical in appearance to the penthouse interior, save for the carpet being grass and the sculpture being a collection of multi-stemmed Amelanchier lamarckii in futuristic white planters) she talks about simplicity, humour, limited colour, allegory and unity.

It doesn't make it into the German section of The Gardener's Garden, however, and it is telling just how little crossover between the two books there is. While both have some historic spaces in common (the Loire Valley's Chateau de Villandry, say, or Kyoto's Ryoan-ji) and both describe the off-beat offerings of Derek Jarman on flat shingle spit in Kent and Jacques Majorelle against a backdrop of ultramarine in Marrakesh, there are whole sweeps of gardens that each book has on its own.

It's a sign of both how much there is to choose from, and how subjective any final selection must be. While The Gardener's Garden entries were nominated by a team of consultants around the world, Reuss chose hers with an eye to presenting a "wide range of styles and situations".

    October 31, 2014 | 3:13 p.m.

The Costa Mesa Senior Center will be closed for two weeks while undergoing $200,000 worth of renovations, city officials said in a news release Friday.

The center, at 695 W. 19th St., will be closed from Nov. 22 to Dec. 7. Renovation work will include interior paint, carpeting, flooring and a new front door entry and reception center, officials said.

In addition, the lobby and library will get new furniture, and the restroom and sunroom will be upgraded.

"This will help give Costa Mesa the first-class senior center it deserves," program administrator Eloisa Espinoza said in a prepared statement. "In addition to the renovation, we are expanding the offering of programs at the senior center to match the interests and meet the expectations of our seniors."

During the closure, seniors can receive services and lunches at the Neighborhood Community Center, 1845 Park Ave. The city will provide shuttle service from the senior center to the community center.

The two-week closure will not affect home meal delivery, officials said.

    Urdaneta Apartments board faces raps

    - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MANILA, PhilippinesFor reversing the agenda items to prioritize waterproofing and painting over the installation of a required fire sprinkler system, officials and members of the board of directors of the Urdaneta Apartments Condominium Association now face civil and criminal charges.

Some unit owners filed a case against their association officials early this month after they found out almost a year later that four of the five board members had waterproofing problems which they, not the association, should have repaired themselves.

The association would pay for such repairs only if they involved structural issues and common areas.

The complainants, led by Dr. Daniel Vazquez, wanted the sprinkler system prioritized since Makati fire officials had warned the association of penalties for noncompliance and for the safety of the residents.

But in a meeting in November 2013, the association instead decided to waterproof and paint the building first despite several objections. The decision was not put to a vote, and the officials ignored subsequent written requests for information, the complaint said.

It was only three months later, or in February 2014, that the association conducted a survey to really find out if there was a waterproofing need.

The survey found that of the 56 units in the building, only 33 had this problem, of which 23 were window-related, meaning it was the unit owners who should pay for the repair, the complaint said.

Regarding the sprinkler system, the association was given by Makati fire officials until October 2015 to comply. The warning was issued in March 2012.

The complaint also asked the court to stop the association officials from making Vazquez and all unit owners pay for their legal defense.

The defendants are Carolyn Butler, Jose Santiago Picornell, Jr., Ma. Lourdes Senn, Violeta Gallego, Fausto Preysler and Mark Nocon, building administrator.

    Trey Radel Sheds Coke Charges

    - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Warren Rojas Posted at 12:10 p.m. today

Disgraced former Rep. Trey Radel has managed to keep his nose clean. So authorities have gone ahead and made that whole nasty cocaine business disappear.

(Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call File Photo)

Per various Sunshine State news outlets, the Florida Republican has had his record expunged following the completion of a nearly yearlong probationary period stemming from his fall 2013 arrest for possession of a controlled substance.

Radel briefly flirted with the idea of serving out the remainder of his first term, but wound up up throwing in the towel after it became painfully obvious he was persona non grata on Capitol Hill.
