Historic Chapel Hill homes rich in University history

    - October 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

While students jog through the many side streets in the quiet neighborhoods of Chapel Hill, the beat in their headphones pushes them past generations of history, though they might not realize it.

In 1793, when University plans were drawn, builders laid out the town meaning the two were and still are very much connected. Chapel Hill is a community where homeowners blend with college students and where residential and commercial life meet along Franklin Street.

The Widow Puckett House on East Franklin Street is one such example. Formerly a widows boarding house and an occasional classroom, the first chancellors residences central location has made it an important player in the Universitys history. Current owners Ann Stewart and Randall Roden take great pride in the story behind their home and said theyre eager to share it with anyone interested.

I feel a real responsibility to learn as much history of the house, to add to it and pass it on, Stewart said. This house has so much history that interesting things happen all the time.

The couple has compiled a list of past owners, including Jane Puckett, the widow for whom the house is named. She housed notable tenants whose names are still visible on the walls.

The students lived upstairs in the attic, and most of them signed their names in candle smudge to the ceiling and now have buildings named after them like Venable, Phillips and Spencer, Stewart said.

The houses history is also constantly evolving with donations from visitors.

People give things to this house all the time, said Stewart, pointing to a picture of the entire University faculty seated in the side yard of the house during the 1870s.

When people leave, one of the things they remember is the town. It is one of the things they come back to see, Roden said. They like to see the same places, and while they come to visit the campus, they also come to see the town and historic district that looks like what they remember.

Architects complete 10-year analysis of school space needs

    - October 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

JAMES CITY Along with Tuesday's presentation on a new concept for a fourth middle school in Williamsburg-James City schools, the division's architects delivered a report on just how long the city and county can cope with current growth trends without expanding or building more schools.

Based on that report, dubbed the "10-year Master Plan Study," Chesapeake-based architectural firm RRMM recommended the division build a new 500-seat elementary school by 2019-2020 and build additions onto the high schools by the 2020-21 school year. The report, of course, recommends the construction of a new middle school to open during the 2018-19 school year.

RRMM relied on FutureThink enrollment projections and some of the school division's own research and reporting. RRMM's report said the nine elementary schools will reach their collective capacity by 2019-2020, and by 2023-2024, James River, Rawls Byrd and Matthew Whaley will be short 52 seats for students while the other six schools combined would have a 151-seat surplus. The architects recommended temporary classroom trailers, building additions or rezoning to cope with the shortfall, but said a new school would allow each school to operate at 95 percent capacity while limiting the rezoning needed to find enough space for all the students.

Similarly, RRMM said the high schools will reach their collective capacity during the 2021-2022 school year, and will be short nearly 300 seats by 2023-24. Classroom trailers and rezoning were possible options given, but RRMM's ultimate recommendation was building additions at the high schools to support 550 to 600 more students.

When it came to the middle schools one of which is already over capacity, based on enrollment data and the size of the facilities RRMM architects said the three current buildings would collectively be 553 seats short by the 2023-2024 school year.

"You could make up that deficit with classroom trailers or additions," architect Duane Harver said. "With each school having a deficit, rezoning would not be effective. You'd be moving around the negative numbers. ... We're proposing that a 600-seat middle school be constructed by the year 2018-2019 and that would extend your capacity to the ten-year mark and beyond."

New Goodwill store opens on Thursday in Great Falls

GREAT FALLS -- The new Easter Seals-Goodwill store is set to open in Great Falls on Thursday.

The store's new location is at 1201 7th Street South, and has about 25,000 square feet.

The retail space accounts for about 15,000 square feet, much larger than the old store's 9,600 square feet.

The official grand opening of the new Goodwill store takes place on Thursday, October 9th, at 8 a.m.

(October 5, 2014) After months of construction, the Easter Seals-Goodwill's Great Falls Goodwill store is just a week away from its grand opening.

Step inside the Great Falls Goodwill store on Tuesday and you'll find a lot of empty space.

After years in their location near 9th Street, the store held it's last business day on Tuesday. After weeks of discounts, the pickings are slim.

But move over to the store's new location at 1201 7th Street South and the shelves are full.

Store manager Laurie Gorence says, "We've been producing in this location to fill it since September 15th. So by the time we get into, we have about three weeks worth of production and product on the floor. This is all new fresh product from donations that have recently come in."

    The rest is here:
