"We sell hammers" was the justification Home Depot managers gave for cheaping out on security to IT employees.

When Home Depot suffered a breach of transaction data that exposed as many as 52 million credit card transactions earlier this year, the company reportedly suffered from lax computer and network security measures for years. Apparently, the company wasnt helped much by its selection of a security architect either. Ricky Joe Mitchell was hired by Home Depot in 2012, and in March of 2013, he was promoted to the position of Senior Architect for IT Security at Home Depot, in charge of the entire companys security architecture. In May of 2014, Mitchellwas convicted of sabotaging the network of his former employer.

And that wasnt the first time he used technology for revenge. Mitchells previous legal troubles resulting from malicious use of his technical skills dates back to when he was a high school junior. In 1996, at the age of 17, Mitchellwho then went by the handle RickDogg in online forumsplanted viruses in his high schools computer system. He was suspended for three days from Capital High School for planting 108 computer viruses to disk space assigned to another student on the Capital High School computer system, according to a school district memo obtained by the Charleston Gazette. He then posted threats to students whom he blamed for reporting him. Mitchell was expelled from the school and sued to be re-instated. The case eventually went to the West Virginia Supreme Court.

On his 1996 personal website, Mitchell posted a description of himself with the title, The story of RICKDOGG:

I love to write and distribute Viruses. They intrigue me. I have taught myself how to program in assembly, c- - and pascal. I also love to fix computers as well. I am considered smart at school although I am very lazy. I do not like the shit they try to teach me so I get bored and try to liven things up a bit.

As Ars reported earlier, former Home Depot employees told the The New York Times they were not surprised by the hack. When they requested additional security training and equipment, managers denied the request with the explanation, "We sell hammers.

Home Depots former security architect had history of techno-sabotage

Yandex NV (YNDX), Russias largest Internet company, started a handyman-referral service similar to Google Inc.-backed Thumbtack Inc., continuing a push to expand beyond search.

The Yandex.Master service -- the master referring to someone who does a job really well -- matches users with local suppliers of services such as apartment renovations, cleaning and gadget repairing. Yandex will start charging service providers next year, based on pay-per-lead.

Yandex, with double Googles Web-search market share in Russia, is moving into businesses ranging from e-commerce to online video to keep users hooked and diversify its revenue sources. Sales growth at the company has slowed for three quarters as more Russians already browse the Internet, leaving the pool of potential new Web users smaller.

The new service is the second started by Lev Volozh, the 26-year-old son of Arkady Volozh, Yandexs billionaire chief executive officer. Three years ago, the younger Volozh started Yandex.Taxi for booking rides online, a popular service that has been leading Uber Technologies Inc. in Russia.

Thumbtack raised $100 million from Google Capital last month. Other similar services include Home Depot Inc.-backed Redbeacon, TaskRabbit and its European clone Helping, set up by Germanys Rocket Internet AG.

Yandex.Master will let service providers contact prospective customers by phone via Yandexs call center. That allows Yandex to charge suppliers for each contact, Lev Volozh said in an interview. That method provides Yandex with a more reliable revenue stream than a commission, because the fee the service provider charges for the task can be misrepresented, he said.

Shares of Yandex, which is registered in Amsterdam and has its main offices in Moscow, fell 2.3 percent to $28.74 yesterday in New York. They have lost 33 percent this year.

A family was awakened early Sunday morning to the sound of a bullet striking their Little Rock home, police say.

Little Rock police officers were patrolling the area of Lyric Lane and Brookside Circle after a report of a shots fired in the area about 4:19 a.m., when Meredith Chestnut, 38, reported that her house at 18 Brookhaven Drive had been struck by a bullet, a police report states.

Chestnut and her husband, Adam Chestnut, 34, told police they were awakened by a loud noise and noticed bullet holes in the walls, police say. Their two children had also been asleep in another room.

Officers on scene found that a single bullet had entered through the second-floor bathroom, traveled through the bathroom closet and bedroom wall, and ricocheted across the bedroom after hitting the bedroom closet, according to the report.

No one was injured during the shooting.

TUSTIN The quiet museum just off Main Street in Tustin is about to get noisy.

Glen Van Antwerp, president of the Pine River Area Historical Society, wants to shake things up at the museum. The group wants to improve the building and display its contents so they tell the story of Tustin's history.

A mystery donor wants to help. Someone pledged a $10,000 matching gift with a $2,000 bonus if they reach the $10,000 goal within the next nine months.

"We want to do a major upgrade to our building and our displays," said Van Antwerp, a woodcarving artist. "So we are having fundraisers and applying for grants to raise $50,000."

The museum is housed is an old potato warehouse with 5,500 square feet of space.

Right now, it's full of amazing stuff like a 1901 bicycle, a 1945 Dodge fire truck, an old river boat and more.

"We have 5,500 square feet of stuff but hardly any stories," he said. "I want to extract the stories."

Van Antwerp has two friends willing to advise him, both museum curators.

"I want to tell how farm families lived in this area, what kind of work they did," he said. "I want to tell the story of our immigrants...all of these stories. And my target age is 13."

Mystery donor offers matching funds

LINN COUNTY (KWWL) - Thousands of dollars of damage was done to a Linn County road after a driver decided to drive through fresh concrete.

"Somebody went around the machine," said Steve Gannon, Linn County engineer. "Used a driveway to get up onto the pavement, did damage to get up onto this fresh concrete."

The damage was done to a new concrete overlay being put down on Monticello Road in Linn County. It's not your everyday pothole patch -- it's eight inches of new concrete.

"It doesn't happen very often at all," said Gannon. "This should last 50, 60 years."

There are signs warning the road is closed to through traffic, and the county says that it warned people who live there that the paving would be happening and they would lose access for a couple of days.

According to the Linn County Sheriff, the construction crew says the damage is worth $100,000 to $350,000, but the county engineer says only part of the road must be fixed and the rest will have "scars" from the tracks.

He estimates the repairs will cost around $20,000 and they are the responsibility of the contractor, not the county.

The engineer says if there was an emergency on the closed section of roadway, the county would allow for emergency vehicles to drive on the wet pavement and would cover the cost.
