Home Depot Hacked After Months of Security Warnings

    - September 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

For a retailer with 2,266 stores and $79billion in annual revenue, buying software to protect against hackers is a good idea. Using the software is a better one. In the year before cybercriminals penetrated payment systems of Home Depot (HD) stores in the U.S. and Canada, the retailer suffered at least two smaller hacks, according to internal company e-mails and reports. Afterward, Home Depot security contractors urged the company to strengthen its cyberdefenses by activating a key, unused feature of its security software that the internal documents say would have added a layer of protection to the retail terminals where customers swipe their cards.

Home Depot confirmed a breach on Sept.8, almost a week after credit card data linked to its customers went up for sale on black-market website Rescator.cc.

The hack put as many as 56 million cards at riskmore than the the 40 million affected by last years breach at Target (TGT), Home Depot said today.

The home-improvement chain expects to pay about $62 million this year to recover from the incursion, including costs for call-center staffing and legal expenses. Insurance will cover $27 million of that cost, the company said.

Internal Home Depot documents show the Atlanta-based retailer had chosen to keep the extra security measure deactivated even though it was designed specifically to spot the kind of malicious software that attacks systems endpoints, like the registers that were hit at Target, Michaels (MIK), Neiman Marcus, and others.

While few details have emerged about the Home Depot breachand its not clear that the deactivated safeguard would have stopped ita person familiar with the investigation says the attack did hit the stores registers.

The hackers used custom-made software to evade detection, relying on tools that hadnt been used in previous attacks, Home Depot said today in a statement. The malicious software, which is believed to have been present between April and September 2014, has now been removed from the companys systems, according to the statement.

Home Depot has said its system breach may have begun as early as April. Three people familiar with the companys cybersecurity at least through April, who arent authorized to discuss it publicly, say the retailer hadnt made the suggested improvements by then.

As our partners make recommendations, theyre processed, sorted, and executed based on the best solutions at hand and, ultimately, whats in the best interests of our customers, says Home Depot spokesman Stephen Holmes, declining to comment further.

Its unclear why Home Depot resisted activating the intrusion prevention feature in its software suite, a Symantec (SYMC) product called Endpoint Protection. The internal documents suggest the program sometimes generated false positives. Two information security managers who previously worked for Home Depot say their supervisor told them to minimize costs and system downtime at the expense of improving security. They and three other former employees, who requested anonymity because they fear retribution, say the information security department has struggled with employee turnover and old software for about three years.

Home Depot Reveals How Bad Its Security Breach Really Was

    - September 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

More than two weeks after Home Depot's cyber-attack was first discovered, the retailer said today that the payment data breach exposed 56 million credit and debit cards.

The company said the breach has been contained and the malware responsible eliminated.

The malware was custom-built to evade detection and, contrary to earlier reports, had not been seen in other breaches, the company said.

The Secret Service said it is "still an ongoing investigation."

The breach eclipsed that of Target last year, which affected about 40 million credit and debit cards.

Like Target, Home Depot is offering free identity protection services, including credit monitoring, to any customer who used a payment card at a Home Depot store beginning in April 2014.

Home Depot promised significant new protection for customers in a statement released today, at a cost of $62 million. The attack, which is now confirmed to have lasted from April to September, was conducted with custom-built malware to evade detection, Home Depot said.

The company has 2,266 retail stores globally, including the U.S., Guam, Canada and Mexico.

Climate Partners Now Offers Live Dispatching Until Midnight

    - September 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Milford, CT (PRWEB) September 18, 2014

Climate Partners, an HVAC repair and service company based in Milford, CT, now offers their customers after-hours, live dispatching until 12:00 a.m., every day of the week, and every day of the year, even on holidays. The calls are answered by a live associate, rather than an automated answering service or voicemail system.

The change was made in August, and Climate Partners says the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

"Our clients can't believe that we'll be there answering the phone live until midnight, including weekends, even on holidays," says Climate Partners' owner, Tom Casey. "It really gives them peace of mind that their investment is worry-free and that we'll be there when they need us."

Climate Partners' owner Tom Casey says the decision to implement late-night live dispatching came from researching clients' call patterns as well as a direct survey to clients, asking what home cooling and home heating solutions they might prefer, as well as service improvements.

"We learned that a large percentage of our clients are working families," says Casey, "and it was incredibly inconvenient for them to arrive home after a long day of work and battling the commute, only to find they had no heat or air conditioning."

Before Climate Partners' new extended dispatching hours, a client's only recourse was to call an automated answering service, leave their information in a message, and wait by the phone for a technician to return their call, compounding the stress of an already stressful situation.

"Heating and cooling systems don't know what time it is and don't really care when they decide to break," explains Casey. "Why stress out our clients, when we could just step up and solve the issue instead?"

Climate Partners is one of the first HVAC company in the area to offer this kind of extended service. Not only can clients directly schedule service with one phone call, but the associate on the line has access to all the client's records and service history, for an efficient and timely service.

"Life is hectic," says Casey, "and the traditional boundaries of 'normal hours' no longer apply. This is the new standard for delivering quality service to today's homeowner."

WEST MILFORD Wayne and Diane Morrissey appear to be living according to Henry Fords words. Married for 33 years this month, the couple has shared the workload and success of a business partnership for 27 of those years, as well.

The Morrisseys have resided in West Milford for 33 years, raising their family, enjoying life in the township and operating Morrissey Overhead Garage Doors from their home. They are the parents of three daughters and grandparents of one little one with another expected any day now.

Wayne Morrissey wears many hats, quite literally. Besides being a husband, father, grandpa and business owner, he has been a firefighter with West Milford Volunteer Fire Co. #6 for 27 years, serving as chief for the last five years. He has also been a West Milford Police Department Special Officer for 16 years, working special events and traffic and crowd control.

On the job Morrissey, 56, learned everything he knows from his father-in-law, a garage door business owner. He was employed in technology at the Meadowlands and working part-time with Dianes father when he decided to take the plunge and open his own business.

I enjoyed the work so I figured Id try it, Id be better with my own business. It was a big jump and Diane and I did it together, he said.

As it has turned out, it was a good move.

Its been phenomenal. When I first started out the business was in West Milford, now Im in five counties. Its grown nicely and Diane and I get along great in business. What she doesnt do, I do, and vice-versa.
