ABC Demolition begins at Giralang shops in Canberra's north.

After 10 years of slow decay, demolition has begun at the old Giralang shops site in Canberra's north.

The demolition has some locals relieved, as the neglected building has remained vacant since 2004.

Giralang Residents Action Group Ross Calvert said there had been safety concerns around the abandoned structure.

"It's been eyesore the centre for a number of years now. There's been vandalism, it's been a danger for children wondering in potentially, it's been of concern to the school for quite some time," he said.

"It really is something you don't want in your neighbourhood."

Mr Calvert said a new centre would be good for the surrounding community.

"We would welcome any development that provides a supermarket and accompanying shops," he said.

Meanwhile, a High Court challenge looms over the development of a Woolworths on the site.

A series of proposals for the redevelopment site have been rejected over the past decade.

GIBSON CITY Two downtown eyesores are coming down in Gibson City.

Lee Farms Excavating this week started demolishing buildings at 103 and 105 S. Sangamon Ave., commonly referred to as the Michaels buildings.

Im really glad we are getting this cleaned up, said Randy Arends, who bought the properties for back taxes. Arends, owner of Gibson City Meats and Deli, rents the building next door to the condemned properties.

Crews began removing portions of 103 S. Sangamon by hand on Monday morning; by Wednesday afternoon, they were able to begin working with an excavator.

"We are bringing it down gently," said Ken Lee, co-owner of Lee Farms Excavating, to protect the neighboring building The Main Attraction that remains open during the work.

"There is a lot of hand work involved," said Lee, whose firm is from Onarga.

A crowd gathered Thursday morning to watch as the final portions of 103 S. Sangamon were removed.

Again, the crew worked slowly, taking the remaining wall down piece by piece and making sure the building did not collapse into D.G. Sullivan's, a short distance to the west.

One of those watching was Mayor Dan Dickey.

"It sure looks different," Dickey said of the vacant lots that remained. "Downtown will never be the same, but it needed to be done."

PHOENIX -- Walter Cwiek has a habit of keeping his thermostat as warm as possible. He uses ceiling fans and tries not to use many lights inside his home. In other words, Cwiek does what he can to keep electricity costs to a minimum.

Still, he says sometimes it's just not enough. "Last month's bill for a 1,400 square foot house was $277," Cwiek tells 3 On Your Side.

So, he took the plunge and invested in solar energy. He hired a company and had solar panels installed on his roof to generate power. But all of those new, shiny solar panels on his roof aren't doing a thing to lower his electric bill. "That's correct. They're just sitting up there getting sunburned," he jokingly says.

Cwiek says the panels were completely installed on June 20, and two weeks later they were inspected and approved by the city. But for nearly two and a half months, the solar panels haven't generated any power.

Why? Well, Cwiek says because APS hasn't installed the meters necessary to read the solar usage. "We've been waiting for them to come out and hook up the meters and get us on the grid so we can start enjoying solar power,"he says.

So, 3 On Your Side got a hold of APS. They investigated and discovered the delay wasn't on their end at all. APS discovered the solar company took an exceptionally long time to inform them Mr. Cwiek's installation job was ready for meters,

APS says in an email to 3 On Your Side that it was informed on "....August 19, and the meter set is scheduled for today, so APS is well within the 6 week timeframe" of installing meters for a homeowner.
