Sharpsburg police officers are credited with saving a driver's life after his car teetered over a retaining wall.

Police said the driver, in his early 70s, had a mechanical error in his car causing it to accelerate.

The driver, according to witnesses, crossed from one parking lot, across Main Street and into his own business lot where it went over a retaining wall.

"It was terrible because he came across and couldn't stop," said witness Diane Boberg.

Boberg called 911 and captured the lifesaving moments on her phone.

Sharpsburg officers Brian Hoebel and Nikki Mautino did not waste any time on scene.

They saw the car was balancing only by the front bumper, which was resting on a minivan below the retaining wall.

Officer Hoebel climbed into the back seat while Officer Mautino stabilized him, holding on to his belt.

"I told him to lay the seat down flat so I could get him out the back," said Hoebel. "Nikki held on to my belt as I climbed in the back seat we had him put the seat down. I told him to roll over on his stomach and crawl towards us. Once he got his hands around my neck and I got his belt, then Nikki pulled me and I pulled him and out he came."

"I think they're great. I think they do their job. They're here to protect and serve and that's exactly what they did," said Boberg.

Candidates outside of the mainstream are grateful not to be "thrown off porches" when campaigning their off-beat ideas to the nation.

While the major players in the election indulge in a well publicised campaign, other candidates have been doing the hard yards pitching their ideas around the country.

Communist League candidate Felicity Coggan says she's happy not to have been "thrown off porches" as she contests the general election in the Manukau East electorate.

"I think it's necessary to reform society," she told TV ONE's Breakfast programme. "You can either choose to reform the system or you can choose to change it".

In the Nelson electorate, a retired airline pilot who lives on a house boat has been busy spreading his gospel of 'free money'.

Richard Osmaston regularly takes to the streets to share the doctrine of the Money Free Party .

"Everything is free, if you don't want to work, don't. Everything is free and everything is voluntary," he said.

Independent candidate and part-time SPCA worker Amanda Vickers says she will continue her quest to contest the election from the Otaki electorate as long as "money is privatised".

"I won't be resting until the monetary system is reformed," she told Breakfast.

Fringe candidates do the hard yards in election campaign

AKRON, Ohio -- Porch Rokr Festival will transform the verandas of Akron's Highland Square into art studios and concert venues all day Saturday.

Entertainment includes over 90 local bands, a beer tour, skate park, sheep herding lawn and a live demonstration on how to set up recording studio.

While the event is financed by public organizations including the Akron Community Center, John S. Knight Foundation, Ohio Arts Council and Jilly's Music Room, it is the porches of private homeswhere the action takes place.

Anita Marron, president of the Highland Square Neighborhood Association, said she started canvassing the neighborhood in February to find people who were willing to host bands. The festival rotates each year among four sections of Highland Square to encourage spontaneous interaction among neighbors.

In its third year, the festival is setting up in the Northeast quadrant. (See map below.)

1.Take lessons from the pros on how to be a rock star. One of the staples of the festival is its homage to Akron's rock and roll heritage, including live workshops by music industry insiders.

From 9 to 10 a.m. David Kennedy from Tric-C Recording Studio will set up a recording studio at Perkins Stone Mansion. He will also talk about selecting talent, mixing recordings and using editing software.

From 11 a.m. to noon, AudioTechnica Education Specialist SteveSavanyu will demonstrate how to set up asound stage at Perkins Mansion. He will provide advice on microphone placement and mixing and adjusting.

Also from 11 a.m. to noon, Ralph Carney, from the 1970s Akron experimental rock band Tin Huey, will lead a jazz and improvisation workshop at the Portage Path Community Learning Center.Carney will display a number of custom-made instruments and talk about how to improvise in a live music setting.
