BUT THEY ARE SALVAGING THE MOST RECOGNIZABLE PART OF THE BUILDING, THANK GOODNESS. THE AMERICAN FEDERAL BUILDING, ALSO KNOWN AS THE ROUND BUILDING, HAS BEEN A PART OF DOWNTOWN SINCE THE EARLY 1960'S. THE DEMOLITION IS NEEDED TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE NEW DOCTOR PHILLIPS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER. PAUL GORGIO GIVING US A UNIQUE VIEW OF THE WORK. TODAY IS A BIG DAY. WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON IT FIVE, SIX, SEVEN YEARS. THE PANELS ARE FINALLY COMING OFF THE BUILDING. I'M THE ARCHITECT. I'M ALSO THE PRESIDENT OF THE MILLS M. CHOICER FELLOWS. THERE'S 20 PANELS THAT WRAP THE ENTIRE CIRCLE OF THE BUILDING. THEY'LL BE REMOVED ONE BY ONE AND TAKEN TO A YARD FOR STORAGE. I'M CAROL BARNES. I HAD TO COME OVER AND SEE THE ROUND BUILDING. THIS IS WHAT WAS AMAZING BECAUSE IT WAS SO FUTURISTIC AND SO DIFFERENT FROM ANYTHING ELSE. THEY'RE CUTTING THAT INTERMEDIATE BAN. IT SEPARATES THE BOTTOM PIECE OF GLASS FROM THE TOP PIECE OF GLASS. WOW. THE CONCRETE PANELS ARE PROBABLY A COUPLE THOUSAND POUNDS EACH. THERE WE GO. THEY'RE KNOCKING OUT THE GLASS. SO ONCE YOU SEE THE FIRE AND THE SPARKS FLYING, YOU KNOW WE'RE ABOUT TO TAKE IT OFF. I'M AMAZED THEY'RE USING THAT SIZE CRANE FOR REMOVING THE PANELS. IT'S THE HISTORY OF THE CITY. IF YOU'VE GOT SOMETHING THAT'S ONE OF A KIND, WHY JUST WRECK IT? IT IS. IT'S KIND OF SAD TO SEE IT

Demolition of Downtown Orlando landmark underway

EATONTOWN Borough officials are investigating the cost of demolishing the vacant and deteriorating former U.S. Army housing units at Fort Monmouth.

Mayor Gerald Tarantolo suggested at the Sept. 10 Borough Council meeting that the borough would seek cost estimates for demolition of the units in the area known as Howard Commons, which he said are blighted and represent a potential hazard.

Howard Commons is a 63-acre tract on Pinebrook Road that is the site of 483 housing units that were occupied by Army personnel prior to the fort closing in 2011.

The discussion the council began at the Sept. 10 meeting included whether the borough has the authority to demolish the structures, which are owned by the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority (FMERA), and how the borough would be reimbursed if the council decides to go forward with the project.

The property is owned by FMERA, and they have full authority to dispose of the property, Tarantolo said.

When they sell properties, they get the check. Based on an agreement with the Army, the government gets 63 percent of the [funds] and the rest goes to FMERA.

That is why we want to quantify what demolition would cost. They will take off the top the cost we incur as part of the process at the closing of the property.

Borough Engineer David Marks suggested the demolition be done in two phases, with the first being to secure an estimate of the cost of demolition, taking into account all pertinent factors.

COVINGTON, Ky. -- The main entrance to Devou Park could be reopened by the end of the year if crews can repair a retaining wall that collapsed in March in time.

Great Lakes Construction will have to shut down Western Avenue to through traffic to accommodate the project.

Mud and trees spilled downhill onto Devou Drive (formerly N. Park Road) and Western Avenue on March 13 when 70-year-old walls gave way.

Local traffic will still have access and the closure will last four to six weeks. Signs have already been erected in the affected areas.

Work would take about 160 days.

The project includes: > Replacing about 400 feet of wall on Devou Drive and 450 feet on Western Avenue. > Replacing a collapsed stone sewer pipe above Western Avenue.

The wall on Western Avenue will be weighed down with bedrock.
