NEWTOWN TOWNSHIPThe board of supervisors heatedly debated the request by the Villas at Newtown for a demolition permit to raze a historic wooden farmhouse on the property located at the entrance to the development at Upper Silver Lake Road and Penns Trail North.

The issue was not part of the Sept. 10 supervisors agenda and is expected to be formally discussed in detail at the boards Sept. 23 meeting.

The Newtown Township-based McGrath Homes, which is now developing the property under a court-supervised agreement reached with the township, no longer wants to preserve the farmhouse, as previously stipulated.

As a result, the developer had asked the Newtown Area Joint Historic Commission (NAJHC) to recommend that the structure be demolished.

The commission is responsible for the protection and preservation of historically and/or architecturally significant structures in Newtown Township and Newtown Borough, and makes recommendations to elected officials in both municipalities on whether historic structures should be saved.

It also reviews demolition applications.

In July, the NAJHC unanimously denied McGrath Homes request to tear down the farmhouse.

The desire to save the structure has prompted commission member Bill Mahler to implore the township supervisors not to grant the demolition permit.

Speaking during the public comment section of the Sept. 10 supervisors' meeting, Mahler, who also chairs the townships Historical Architectural Review Board (HARB), claimed that the unoccupied three-story farmhouse has considerable historic value.

COLUMBUS The air quality inside the Platte County Courthouse will be tested following complaints about odor and humidity in certain areas of the building.

The Platte County Board of Supervisors approved having environmental firm Cardno ATC test the air quality. The date when the test will be done hasnt been determined, but will cost up to $2,000.

Complaints have specifically come from employees and customers who visited the treasurers office over the past few months. There has also been an odor in the sheriffs office. Those two offices are adjacent to each other.

The air throughout the entire courthouse will be looked at to determine if the problem is contained to one certain area or if it is more widespread, said Supervisor Tom Martens, chairman of the building and grounds committee. The air quality in the building will be compared to the air outside and Environmental Protection Agency, Occupational Safety and Health Administration and American Industrial Hygiene Association guidelines will be used as references.

Martens said he doesn't know if the air quality poses any health risks.

We dont have any idea. That is why we are having the testing done to see if there are any health dangers, he said.

Courthouse maintenance attempted to address the issue by putting dehumidifiers in the treasurers office.

So far we havent been able to eliminate the odor. I understand that the odor is more prominent on some days than others, said Supervisor Hollie Olk.

The smell could been influenced by the hot, humid weather this summer, Martens said. The windows in the courthouse have been replaced over the years and can't be opened to help circulate air.

The testing will probably be done over a couple of days and public use of the courthouse should not be interrupted, Olk said.

: The compound wall of a three-storied house near Edachira, Kakkanad caved in during the heavy rain that lashed the region on Saturday midnight. The incident spooked residents and locals as it comes a month after a three-storied buildingcollapseclaimed three lives at Aluva.

The police said the compound wall of the five cent property owned by Sukumaran collapsed onto the adjacent compound, located about 20 feet deep off the ground level. The solid-blocks wall along with a make-shit shed on the higher gradient began to give way around 12 midnight and it collapsed completely about four hours later. However, no causalities have been reported and those inside the building were evacuated to the houses nearby, police said.

The building had about 14 persons living in it, including the six-member family of the property owner and migrant labourers. They were evacuated from the spot with the help of local residents and the police.

The 15-cent property onto which the building collapsed was owned by a person called Jose, settled in Bangalore.

Chairman of the Thrikkakara Municipality Shaji Vazhakkala attribute the incident to the unscientific soil mining in the adjacent property owned by Jose. Steps are on to remove the debris from the spot and strengthen the building with a retaining wall. The construction of the wall will begin once the authorities complete inspections in the area, he said, adding that the cost of the works would be recovered from the owner of the neighbourhood property.

Additional District Magistrate B. Ramachandran, who visited the spot on Sunday, said an investigation was on to assess whether the collapse had weakened the building. The evacuees would be permitted to return only after a detailed examination by experts from the PWD buildings division.
