GREENSBORO, N.C. Leaders of the Cone Health Healing Garden say they are ready to start construction on a two-acre $1.2 million project to help cancer patients.

Landscape Architect Sally Pagliai and her friend Mary, a cancer survivor, first started thinking about a healing garden for patients two years ago.

Both my father and my husband had cancer, Pagliai explained. I lost them both to cancer. The process of going through the whole chemotherapy treatment and being here [at Cone Health Cancer Center] an awful lot of hours, it just made sense for people to have an oasis when theyre going through a stressful time like that.

Pagliai said the staff at Wesley Long Hospital is warm and kind, and she wants employees and patients there to have a relaxing escape in nature.

The garden will include a wetland area, patios, boardwalk walkways and a community garden.

We will have raised brick beds that will be tall enough so wheelchairs can roll up to them and people can garden from their chairs.

The community has been incredibly receptive to the Healing Garden, which will be located in Greensboro not far from Friendly Center just outside the Cone Health Cancer Center.

Theyve raised $875,000 of the $1.2 million goal.

Because cancer touches all of us in some way, shape or form, people can relate to this, added Pagliai. Nature has a huge effect on helping people to heal. The whole idea of working here at this garden at this hospital has really helped me to heal also and to give back to such a wonderful community.

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Two On Your Side learned residents of a West Spokane mobile home park have received more time to find new places to live.

Staff at the Hilltop Mobile Home Park said they were working with Spokane leaders to try to get the mobile home community up to certain safety standards.

In late August, safety concerns led Spokane leaders to order the eviction of RVs from the Hilltop community. The City claimed electrical wiring was unsafe in the park.

"It's the property owner's responsibility to make sure that he's providing for conditions that achieve (safety)," said one city leader.

One week after the eviction order was issued, KREM 2 News observed many electrical cords still hanging outside resident's trailers.

VANCOUVER Housing affordability trends are such that, in Vancouver at least, a starter home no longer is a ticket to bigger and better digs as the years go by.

It used to be that homeowners would pay down mortgages and build equity, then be able to afford to move to a nicer house, perhaps in a more desirable neighbourhood.

Not any more.

Those pricier homes are simply unaffordable, even for owners of starter and mid-level homes.

So, by the time wannabe-buyers figure they can make the leap, they will increasingly find that the more expensive homes are out of reach.

Benjamin Tal, a deputy chief economist at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, outlined this new trend Monday in notes prepared for the International Housing and Home Warranty Conference in Vancouver.

The event, running to Wednesday, is being attended by 200 delegates who design, build, insure and provide warranties for both market and social housing.

Delegates are hearing about such things as how real estate practices have been changed by the Internet, new energy-saving innovations in home construction, and how shipping containers can be transformed into housing.

Tal explains: The value of bigger and pricier properties is rising notably faster than less-expensive properties widening the gap between starter home and dream house.

Regardless of what your starting point is, and by how much your property has appreciated, the desired move-up target is getting further and further out of reach.
