Its often called superstition, but Western businesses are starting to see a rising influence of Asian principles like the practice of feng shui become commonplace. The feng shui of a residence or business can often make or break the deal for Asian clientele. The conservatives might balk, but world-savvy businesses might find that incorporating the ancient art of feng shui makes good financial sense.
Theres no doubt about Chinas financial clout in todays economy and that their influence is expected to rise. As we move into a more global economy, there is an increasing need to rise to meet the unique design and conceptual challenges posed by Asian design traditions. Chinese firms are making starts on large commercial and residential developments, and a recent article in the Wall Street Journal points out the rise in Chinese home builders. These firms are not only building, they're including feng shui principles, like avoiding having a sink and stove opposite one another, a very common arrangement in Western kitchens but considered taboo in feng shui. These new developments are going up on both East and West Coasts and are designed for Chinese consumers in America.
Travel has also noticed the rising Chinese tourism, with more than a 53% growth in Chinese travel from 2009 to 2010. Hotels like Fairmont and Hilton are adding congee, a rice porridge, to morning buffets, and businesses are increasingly adding Mandarin-speaking staff. Thats because when the Chinese vacation, they come looking to spend. According to the US Commerce department, Chinese visitors average $7,100 per visit, more than doubling that of other overseas visitors who average about $3,240. An estimated 1.8 million Chinese tourists visited the US in 2013, and that number is expected to grow to 2.1 million in 2014. According to a new report, the number of Chinese visitors coming to the United States will more than triple by 2020.
Business has learned that accommodating Asian aesthetics is also financially smart. The Las Vegas MGM Grand was originally designed to have patrons enter an open lions mouth, but changed the entrance when visitors complained it was bad luck to enter the mouth of a vicious animal. The new entrance, redesigned in 1998, and now features a stately lion in repose at the front of the casino, is considered to be more auspicious and luckier for gambling. This redesign significantly changed MGMs bottom line in gambling dollars.
More than just making sense, feng shui makes money. In Asia, businesses rarely begin construction on new projects without consulting a feng shui master. The feng shui master looks at the surroundings, calculates the degree of an entrance or reads the symbolism of the concepts incorporated in the buildings design. Another sign of the Chinese influence? The issuance of EB-5 visas to foreigners that enables them to invest $500,000 as a way of gaining a temporary visa. In all, over 6,800 were issued to Chinese nationals, widely overtaking all other countries. The next closest country was South Korea with 364 visas issued.
What is clear is that taking feng shui principles and guidelines into account makes good business sense, and why its a good idea that businesses look for ways to incorporate feng shui principles like those practiced in Asia. Creating an appealing environment that makes both businesses and consumers comfortable will give businesses that extra edge in competing for Asian and Chinese dollars, but shouldnt overlook feng shuis appeal to Westerners too. To help would-be feng shui consultants understand these principles, Feng Shui expert, Kathryn Weber, and publisher of the Red Lotus Letter feng shui e-zine, will be offering a Feng Shui Master Consultant certification course in traditional Chinese feng shui this November 12-16, 2014 at the Hilton Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nevada.
Participants will learn important principles and guidelines of traditional Chinese feng shui versus the Westernized feng shui that is more aimed at following esoteric practices and has a highly spiritual quality about it that appeals more to Westerners. Traditional Chinese feng shui looks at time and uses ancient formulas and a specialized compass called a luo pan. All attendees will be exposed and trained in the fundamentals of feng shui as it applies to various types of residences and businesses.
Learning how to interpret feng shui principles will create appealing environments more suited for Asian clientele. Weber explains that she frequently speaks to businesses and architects looking for feng shui consultants who are classically trained and who can bridge the gap between East and West, and who take a Chinese approach to feng shui. Plus, according to Weber, consultants trained in this method can command higher fees for this knowledge and skill and are highly marketable as business advisers.

Cricket legend Geoffrey Boycott has revealed how he turned to Feng Shui to help him beat cancer.
The famously blunt-speaking former England captain says he was open to anything in his four-year fight against the killer disease after the discovery of a tumour in his neck.
He enlisted the help of Master Li, a feng shui expert used by a friend - who advised him which direction he should sleep and identifying which areas of his house were most healthy.

However, the mayor, Natacha Bouchart, joked on Twitter that she may use the nine-foot high steel fences to block all ferry traffic to and from the town if Britain continues to dismiss her demand to help pay the 12 million annual bill for efforts to stop illegal immigrants.
Ms Boucharts aides said the mayor considers the offer of fencing insufficient and believes that it reflects a lack of understanding by the British of what we are up against here. She says Calais is being held hostage by up to 1,500 migrants encamped around the port.
The deputy mayor, Philippe Migonet, said: "When I first heard about it (the offer of fencing), I thought it was the legendary British sense of humour." However, he welcomed it as a first step towards providing more aid.
Ms Bouchart threatened last week to blockade the port of Calais if the British government failed to come up with funding.
Most of the illegal immigrants in the town are from Eritrea and other impoverished African countries, but some have come from Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East, according to charity workers who feed and clothe them. Every day, some break into lorries bound for Britain and try to jump on to trains, local authorities say. Some who clung to the undercarriages of lorries and buses have been crushed to death.
Calais police say they have too few officers to cope with the problem and believe that illegal immigrants manage to cross the Channel most days.
Fences key for whitebait fritters

As whitebait season gets into full swing, Regional Council staff say the fishy fritters will keep coming if people continue to step up and care for their local waterways.
This year, 58 private landowners have signed up for our help to fence and plant waterways in the Tauranga Harbour catchment, said Bay of Plenty Regional Council Western Land Manager Robyn Skelton.
Together weve fenced 78 kilometres of river and stream margins and put 100,000 plants in the ground this year. It all helps to improve water quality and create safe-havens for whitebait to live and breed in, she said.
Whitebait numbers have been in decline for many years, mainly due to land use change thats caused a loss of breeding habitat and declining water quality.
Its great to have had so many local landowners step up and start to turn that around.
Some farmers have gone a step further by re-contouring their drains and installing fish friendly flap gates on their culverts, so that whitebait can complete their breeding cycles again. Its an easy fix for channelised waterways that makes a big difference for the fish, Miss Skelton said.
Whitebait are the juveniles of five different native fish species. Every autumn, adult fish lay their eggs amongst plants and grasses along estuary and stream edges. They usually lay in tidal zones where salt and fresh water mix. If kept shaded and untrampled, the eggs will survive in situ for several weeks, until theyre swept out to sea as larvae by the next spring tide and flood.
The larvae turn into fish and fatten up over winter before they run back upstream as fritter fodder in spring. The lucky few that escape nets and frying pans continue upstream and grow to become adults that lay eggs in following years, Miss Skelton said.

Fences key for whitebait fritters
The public is invited to the grand opening of phase one of Portland Community College's new Swan Island Training Center.
An open house will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the center, located at 6400 N. Cutter Circle, Portland. It will feature tours of the new 20,000-square-foot trades education building, which will house the PCC's Trades & Industry Division.
The center is opening as a resource for continuing education, training, retraining and professional development for Swan Island businesses. Courses offered at it include: a Facilities Maintenance Technology two-year degree; Facilities Maintenance Technology and HVAC Installers certificates; Millwright, Industrial Mechanics, Limited Maintenance Electrician, Manufacturing Plant Electrician and Stationary Engineer apprenticeships; and a Limited Building Maintenance Electrician training program.
The open house will be held in partnership with the Swan Island Business Association. Swan Island is one of Portlands most active industrial communities, with manufacturing, shipping, construction and distribution all being represented with significant business operations.
The center is located in a former Oregon Motor Pool Facility that PCC bought in 2010. The renovation cost $4.6 million. Most of the money, 3.6 million, was earmarked from PCC's 2008 voter-approved $374 million construction bond. An additional $1 million from the Oregon Department of Community College and Workforce Development was approved by the 2012 Oregon Legislature.
The Trades & Industry program had been located at three miles away at PCC's Cascade Campus. It outgrew that space, however, prompting the move to the new, larger center.
According to PCC, general contractor J.E. Dunn spent the summer preparing the five-acre former motor pool site. They first removed old equipment, including a 20,000-gallon gasoline and a 12,000-gallon ethanol tank. Metals, old gear, appliances and furniture were sold or recycled. Auto lifts and related equipment were moved to PCCs automotive program at the Sylvania Campus or donated to local high school programs.
The existing 11,000 square foot structure was then renovated, with an additional 12,000 square feet was added for classes and lab space for Facilities Maintenance Technology HVAC-R (heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration), Electrical Trades Apprenticeship, and Fiber Optics.
Fall classes will start at the center on Sept. 22.

As consumers seek to complete outdoor projects around their house while the weather is still pleasant, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine warns them to beware of driveway-paving scams and untrustworthy home-improvement contractors.
Since June, his office has received more than 60 complaints involving asphalt, concrete or paving about half of them involving door-to-door sales.
He advises homeowners to research contractors before giving them money or signing contracts, and to get estimates in writing and check references.
Under Ohios Home Solicitation Sales Act, consumers have three days to cancel most contracts signed at their home.
