Some pest control companies think I like to pick on the industry. That is actually not the case. I just like to promote professionalism and intelligent pest management.

There are a lot of good, honest companies in this industry. There are also others that should be in another line of work.

I have said many times that most people can control their own pests without using pesticides or a pest control company. Of course, there are many people who prefer to hire someone for this and that is fine.

Get several proposals

When you want to hire a professional, be careful and get several companies to give you a proposal. First, make sure they can properly identify the pest you have when they inspect your home. If they are true professionals, they will know the scientific name of the pest and give it to you so you can Google it for more information.

If the representative who comes to your home or business doesnt recognize your pest and offers to treat your home anyway, do not let him. If he offers to take the bug back to the office for identification, that is fine.

A professional pest management specialist will inspect your home or business, identify any pests and offer to treat the infested areas safely and effectively. Most companies want to make regularly scheduled visits to your home. That is OK as long as they dont just spray pesticides inside your home and call it pest control.

It is, in reality, pesticide pollution. They should come by periodically and inspect your home or business for pests and look for conditions conducive to pests and for possible entrance ways for pests to come into your home.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. New rules dealing with homeless animals and outdoor lighting are scheduled for final votes by the Rio Rancho Governing Body on Wednesday.

The governing body meeting is set for 6 p.m. at City Hall.

Among other changes, amendments to the animal ordinance would raise the cost of adopting a pet from the city shelter to $100, but allow the police chief to offer discount programs.

The changes would also decrease from seven days to three days the time the shelter must hold an animal with no evidence of ownership before putting it up for adoption or transferring it to another entity. Animals cant be euthanized before seven days unless theyre suffering or dangerous, and shelter personnel can put an animal down only as a last resort.

The outdoor lighting ordinance sets requirements for most new or replacement outdoor lights to be shielded so the light doesnt spill off the property intended to be lit and cause problems for neighbors or passers-by. Exemptions include existing lights, emergency situations and less-bright bulbs if theyre under a covered porch or activated by a motion sensor.

If the rules pass the second reading, theyll become effective 10 days from the affirmative vote.

Michael Veracka, a Bethpage resident, has been promoted to associate professor at Farmingdale State College. Veracka teaches in the Department of Urban Horticulture and Design in the School of Business. He is also department chair.

An award-winning landscape architect, Veracka has worked across the country designing and creating gardens, from small urban spaces to large country gardens. He is the creator of the Sustainable Garden at Farmingdale State College, a new half-acre demonstration garden focusing on contemporary strategies and practices relating to responsible resource use; conservation and innovation; product development, and food production. In 2013, the State University of New York designated the garden as one of Six Big Ideas with Unlimited Potential.

I am thrilled to be able to position our horticulture students to have real-world opportunities within our curriculum to learn firsthand how to create, construct, and maintain natural and built systems that underscore Farmingdale State Colleges commitment to sustainable land practices, Veracka said. The involvement of our students prepares them to enter the work force where knowledge and skills of landscape sustainable practices are increasingly desirable.

At the root of Verackas work is a reverence for nature and a respect for the natural environment. His landscape gardening is particularly well known throughout New England. He is a graduate of Providence College (Rhode Island) and taught at the Rhode Island School of Design. He maintains a home in Providence.

The School of Business enrolls over 2,200 students in the Departments of Business, Computer Systems, Global Business Management, Visual Communications, Urban Horticulture and Design.

Hours of steady rain was a blessing to the parched West Texas landscape, however it did prove to be quite a hindrance Friday night for the Hale Center Owls who slipped and dropped a victory to the Sudan Hornets by a final score of 21-12.

In the majority of the first half, both teams struggled to capitalize on opportunities as both offenses found it difficult to find significant yards in the mud. It wouldnt be until late in the second quarter when Sudan quarterback Stephen Schovasja would scramble down the right sideline for a 15-yard touchdown with 35 seconds left in the half. A two-point conversion run by Barry Johnson put the Hornets up 8-0. Johnson found his stride in the second half as he used short gains up the middle of the field to rack up two touchdowns and a total of 163 rushing yards in the entire game.

However, Hale Center gained its footing in the second half as the Owls battled into scoring position after a 20-yard punt return by Dalton Needham. Hale Centers running back Max Lucero then found an opening, making his way down to the 18-yard line. Ten yards later, Lucero finished the job with an 8-yard touchdown run. Lucero contributed to Hale Centers 214 total rushing yards. A two-point conversion would fail, keeping Hale Center down 8-6.

Johnson quickly answered for Sudan as a march down the field ended in a 3-yard touchdown run by the running back. A failed two-point conversion lit up the scoreboard at 14-6.

In the fourth quarter, Johnson scored again after a 25-yard touchdown run, to put Sudan up 21-6.

With just more than two minutes left in the game, a second fumble recovery by Needham set the Owls up deep in Hornet territory.

With a run up the center of the field, Lucero picked up the second touchdown for Hale Center, making the score 21-12 after a field two-point conversion.

But time would run out for the Owls, which posted their second loss of the season. Hale Center will take on Farwell next Friday as they head to the home of the Steers.

Rains dampen Hale Centers hunt for win

William Hill, the global British betting firm whose Australian operations are headed by prominent Sydney racing identity Tom Waterhouse, has struck a secretive financing deal to funnel millions in punters' losses to Gibraltar.

The group acquired the nation's largest online bookmaker, Sportingbet, and Waterhouse's eponymous online wagering business, last year. Waterhouse was later appointed chief executive.

The financial statements for his company, William Hill Holdings Pty Ltd, show a loan of 334 million ($580 million) from a company in Gibraltar called Steeplechase. The hefty 5.79 per cent interest rate on this loan means $40 million of profits will go offshore, tax free, each year.

There is increasing concern in government and racing-industry circles over the small contribution made by corporate bookmakers in taxes and levies in Australia. News of this William Hill tax scheme is likely to bolster support for proper regulation of corporate gambling.

Already, gambling reform is back on the table in Canberra. A motion by National Party senator for Victoria, Bridget McKenzie, was carried at last weekend's party conference for online gambling to be regulated by the Commonwealth.

Such a move would thwart the big corporate bookmakers Ladbrokes, Paddy Power and William Hill from "jurisdiction shopping" to find the best odds on tax and licensing.

Most corporate bookies are licensed in the Northern Territory where, on the most recent figures available, the entire sector paid just $2.3 million tax on turnover of $5.7 billion and profit of $469 million.

National regulation, if judiciously implemented, would prove a boon for taxpayers, the racing industry and the punters. The only losers would be foreign shareholders of the British betting houses that have expanded their interests dramatically here over the past three years.

Ironically, in pursuing its deregulation agenda, the Coalition did away with the National Gaming Regulator when it got to office. Now though, there is recognition that the damaging social effects of gambling and tax avoidance by the corporate players need to be addressed.

Melissa Roche is a local interior designer finding national success. She recently was crowned champion of HGTVs Brother vs. Brother television competition and owns a successful interior design firm, Parlor Four Thirty, on East Sahara Avenue. Her motto: Approach each project as if it were meant for a magazine shoot.

How did Brother vs. Brother come about, and what was the experience like?

Brother vs. Brother was a competition show between 10 contestants with backgrounds in renovation, design and real estate. The challenge was to see who could improve a homes property value the most through renovation and design.

The experience was amazing! For all of us who would love to compete on a reality show or even have our own show, it is a real Catch-22. It is exciting to see yourself on television and taking on the challenges, but things are suppose to be stressful, otherwise no one would watch.

You are exposing yourself to the scrutiny of the judges and the audience. I think I am one tough cookie, but we all hit our breaking point.

What trends are you seeing for Las Vegas homes?

Out with the desert Tuscan style and in with fresh, cleaner lines.

There is a lot of tumbled travertine and tile that we have been removing to replace with wood. Paint colors are switching from tans to light grays. And smooth walls are taking over. Sorry folks, knockdown texture is not an upgraded feature.

Im also putting in clients homes wallcoverings yes, wallpaper such as grass cloth.
