Outdoor cigarette smoking, e-cigarettes banned in parts of Golden

    - August 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

GOLDEN, Colo. A popular Colorado tourist spot is going smoke free. Starting next year, you could be fined $50 for lighting up or vaping in public in Golden.

The ban includes outdoor areas for a part of Golden where supporters of the move say there are so many bars and restaurants that theres just too much second-hand smoke. But some think the decision is going way too far.

The city council voted in favor of the ban at its meeting Thursday night.

The are affected includes Washington Avenue between 10th and 14th streets, and 12th and 13th streets between Arapahoe and Ford streets.

Other popular public places in Golden fall under the smoking ban as well. Fossil Trace Golf Course, Clear Creek RV Park, city parks, trails and outdoor events are all included.

Business owners are a little concerned about losing long-time customers, but at the same time the city believes there is an opportunity to attract new business since people wont have to deal with all of the smoke anymore.

FOOTBALL: Langham Creek's comeback bid falls short against Klein Oak

    - August 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Langham Creek and Klein Oak are incapable of playing a normal football game.

For the third consecutive meeting, the two teams had everyone on edge.

Klein Oak bested Langham Creek in a wild 50-44 win Saturday at Klein Memorial Stadium.

It looked like a Klein Oak rout at first. The Panthers were ahead 43-20 with four minutes left in the third quarter. But a furious Langham Creek comeback that included 24 unanswered points completely changed the landscape of this game.

"I told those guys at halftime," Langham Creek head coach Todd Thompson said."'We have a choice. We can keep letting the mistakes happen and keep going in the direction we're going in or we can turn this around. We're going to find out a lot about our team in the second half.'"

The Lobos certainly responded in the second half. But an 85-yard kickoff return from Klein Oak's Derrick Durden set up his 5-yard touchdown run with23 seconds left, allowing the Panthers to take the win back.

    All Klein Oak early

It was all Klein Oak for nearly three quarters Saturday.

The way Langham Creek started the game helped. The first play of the game was an interception for Klein Oak's Jacob Harper. Quarterback Jose Blankenship turned that into a 3-yard touchdown down run.

The Panthers' second score was helped by another Langham Creek mishap. An illegal substitution penalty sustained a Klein Oak drive on 4th and 2. The Panthers drove down the field and capitalized with JT Smith's 1-yard touchdown run.

Israel claims land in West Bank

Jerusalem: Israel laid claim on Sunday to nearly 400 hectares (1000 acres) of West Bank land in a Jewish settlement bloc near Bethlehem - a step that could herald significant Israeli construction in the area - defying Palestinian demands for a halt in settlement expansion and challenging world opinion.

Peace Now, an Israeli group that opposes the construction of settlements in the West Bank, said that the action on Sunday might be the largest single appropriation of West Bank land in decades and that it could "dramatically change the reality" in the area.

Palestinians aspire to form a state in the lands that Israel conquered in 1967.

Israeli officials said the political directive to expedite a survey of the status of the land came after three Israeli teenagers were kidnapped and killed in June while hitchhiking in that area. In July, the Israeli authorities arrested a Palestinian who was accused of being the prime mover in the kidnapping and killing of the teenagers. The timing of the land appropriation suggested that it was meant as a kind of compensation for the settlers and punishment for the Palestinians.

The land, which is near the Jewish settlement of Gvaot in the Etzion bloc south of Jerusalem, has now officially been declared "state land," as opposed to land privately owned by Palestinians, clearing the way for the potential approval of Israeli building plans there.

But the mayor of the nearby Palestinian town of Surif, Ahmad Lafi, said the land belonged to Palestinian families. He told the official Palestinian news agency WAFA that Israeli army forces and personnel posted orders early on Sunday announcing the seizure of land that was planted with olive and forest trees in Surif and the nearby villages of Al-Jaba'a and Wadi Fukin.

Interested parties have 45 days in which to register objections.

The kidnapping of the teenagers prompted an Israeli military clampdown in the West Bank against Hamas, the Islamic group that dominates Gaza and that Israel said was behind the abductions. The subsequent tensions along the Israel-Gaza border erupted into a 50-day war that ended last week with an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire.

Israel seizes land in West Bank block

Israel on Sunday laid claim to nearly 1,000 acres of West Bank land in a Jewish settlement block near Bethlehem a step that could herald significant Israeli construction in the area defying Palestinian demands for a halt in settlement expansion and challenging world opinion.

Peace Now, an Israeli group that opposes the construction of settlements in the West Bank, said that the action Sunday might be the largest single appropriation of West Bank land in decades and that it could dramatically change the reality in the area.

In July, the Israeli authorities arrested a Palestinian who was accused of being the prime mover in the kidnapping and killing of the teenagers. The timing of the land appropriation suggested that it was meant as a kind of compensation for the settlers and punishment for the Palestinians.

The land, which is near the Jewish settlement outpost of Gvaot in the Etzion block south of Jerusalem, has now officially been declared state land, as opposed to land privately owned by Palestinians, clearing the way for the potential approval of Israeli building plans there.

But the mayor of the nearby Palestinian town of Surif, Ahmad Lafi, said the land belonged to Palestinian families from the area. He told the official Palestinian news agency WAFA that Israeli army forces and personnel arrived in the town early Sunday and posted orders announcing the seizure of land that was planted with olive and forest trees in Surif and the nearby villages of Al-Jabaa and Wadi Fukin.

The kidnapping of the teenagers prompted an Israeli military clampdown in the West Bank against Hamas, the Islamic group that dominates Gaza and that Israel said was behind the abductions. The subsequent tensions along the Israel-Gaza border erupted into a 50-day war that ended last week with an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire.

The land appropriation has quickly turned attention back to the Israeli-occupied West Bank and exposed the contradictory visions in the Israeli government that hamper the prospects of any broader Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesman for Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, condemned the announcement and called for a reversal of the land claim, saying that it would further deteriorate the situation and that all settlement was illegal.

Though Israel says that it intends to keep the Etzion settlement block under any permanent agreement with the Palestinians and that most recent peace plans have involved land swaps, most countries consider Israeli settlements to be a violation of international law. The continued construction has also been a constant source of tension between Israel and the Palestinians, as well as Israel and its most important Western allies.

Interior decorator Debby Francis goes to Adkins Lighting Center regularly because of the wide variety of lighting the store offers.

Ive never had any type of lighting challenge that they couldnt help me with, she said about the residential lighting retailer and supplier on Midlothian Turnpike in Chesterfield County.

They have anything from under-cabinet lights to lamps and everything in between, Francis said. If its something thats trending, you will always find it there. You dont have to look anywhere else.

Adkins Lighting Centers clients include designers and builders as well as customers building houses and retail customers who are upgrading their lighting.

We carry thousands of fixtures and lamps, said co-owner Debbie Edwards, adding that the company also sells mirrors, decorative accessories and ceiling fans.

Sixty percent of Adkins Lightings sales are from retail customers. The remaining 40 percent is from selling items to builders for new-home construction.

Charlotte Via, the selections coordinator for Bel Arbor Builders in Chesterfield, has her clients work with Edwards to simplify the process of choosing lighting fixtures.

She has all the homeowners information and floor plans and that makes the process less intimidating, Via said. She will go out and walk the house with them and help them understand where the lighting fixtures will go as well as the correct height and dimensions. She gives them individualized attention.

Edwards and her husband, Mark, are part of the team outfitting a home in Chesterfields Hallsley subdivision that will serve as the 2014 Richmond Symphony Designer House.

We are working with Bel Arbor Builders, which is building the house for a client, Debbie Edwards said. We are providing some of the lighting for the designer house as well as all of the lighting for Bel Arbors client.
