As go home security cameras, so goes the Dropcam. The very cool, Google-owned company put everyone on notice with their snazzy camera, meant for home security, but good for a variety of use cases. A new challenger, Simplicam, wants to unseat them from their throne atop the consumer security cam heap. Offering a bit more technical savvy than the Dropcam, Simplicam may end up the home security camera you should be considering instead of others it competes with. Is Simplicam as good as advertised, though? We put it through its pacesto find out.
From the second you get the Simplicam box in your hand, you know theyre not messing around. Cleverly designed and smartly packaged, Simplicam takes a very streamlined approach to getting you up and running. Layer upon layer of camera, cords, and mounting bracket give you all you need, and walk you through setup as you unbox.
The Simplicam itself is a vicious kidney shot to others in the market. The frame is made of solid aluminum, and has an articulating swivel. There is a well placed cord cutout at the bottom, too, so if you want to set Simplicam on a shelf, the (flat!) cord slips into the background neatly, virtually undetectable.
The shape of Simplicam is equal parts visual pleasure and solid security. The round camera assembly slips straight out a the sqaure-ish frame, and makes Simplicam a handsome addition just about anywhere you want to place it. All metal, you dont have that feeling Simplicam needs to be handled with too much care, either. Beautiful and solid, Simplicams hardware already sets it above much of the competition. The included wall mount, though plastic, is sturdy and reliable, with brackets that grip the Simplicam tight.
The Simplicam (Called Closeli in the App Store and Google Play, as thats who makes Simplicam) app is brilliant, and walks you right through setup from the start. With the push of a few buttons, your Simplicam is linked to your WiFi, set up and ready to go.
The included host of features is impressive, and only get better with a subscription (more on that in a minute). The app interface also makes having and monitoring multiple cams a breeze, as theyre all right there on the first screen. I can also happily report the Closeli app is available on the iPad as well as the iPhone, and the web portal mimics the mobile app perfectly.
Aside from being easy to use, Closeli also offers a host of granular controls. Choose when to get notifications, and what type youd like to see (someone instead of something, for instance). Turn the camera or notifications off at certain points of the day, or access the microphone feature to create a kind of intercom system. Yeah, you can now scold the children or dogs from anywhere.

Simplicam review: the Dropcam killer has arrived
In 2009, Dustin Gadberry found himself forced to lay off employees from his construction company and look for handyman jobs to survive the economic downturn.
Today, Gadberry Construction Co. is thriving, having increased its revenue from a low of $250,000 in 2010 to $3.6 million last year.
The businesss slowly recovered, thanks in part to the Dallas Small Business Development Center. Gadberry sought help from the nonprofit organization to become a government contractor and diversify his sales. Previously, the company worked on private-sector commercial jobs.
Theyve been a big help. I could pick up the phone and call them anytime, Gadberry said. If they dont know it, theyll get me to the people who know it.
On Thursday, the Dallas SBDC honored Gadberry and other small business clients at Deal Day, an annual event that connects North Texas entrepreneurs with bankers and other lenders. More than 250 businesses registered for the event featuring 48 bankers and other lenders.
Each year, the nonprofit organization highlights small businesses that have expanded their operations as a recognition of their hard work.
While Dallas SBDC business consultants have had a hand in providing guidance to the award winners and other entrepreneurs, senior business adviser Judith Collins says credit belongs to owners like Gadberry.
Its uniquely that business that recognizes how to apply the information and uniquely recognizes when they need information, and I just admire them, Collins said. I give them all the credit. Its them taking the risk, not me.
The Dallas SBDC provides free counseling and training to entrepreneurs starting a business and others who want to expand. The nationwide network of Small Business Development Centers is supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration, local partners and private sources.
This year, the Dallas SBDC plans to target more services and resources to small business in southern Dallas, an area that has been identified by the citys GrowSouth initiative, Collins said. The economic development plan, championed by Mayor Mike Rawlings, aims to narrow the disparities between northern and southern Dallas.

The superstar couple got hitched in a beautiful ceremony at the Chateau Artisan Miami, which is a castle that sits on 14 acres amid a private lake and royal gardens. There were about 200 wedding guests, which included Kevin Hart and his fiance Eniko Parrish, Ludacris and his girlfriend Eudoxie, Terrence J, BETs Stephen Hill, Quentin Richardson, Dorell Wright, Carmelo and La La Anthony, LeBron James, producer Will Packer, actress AJ Johnson, Donte Stallworth and ring designer Jason of Beverly Hills.
E! News obtained sketches of Gabbys wedding dress, which was designed by Dennis Basso for Kleinfeld. All females in attendance were asked to match the bride in white, and the men dressed in all black to match the groom. It is also rumored that John Legend serenaded the couple at the wedding.
Although guests were asked to sign confidentiality agreements and ditch their phones and cameras at the door, Gossip Extra spilled all the deets for the couples big day.
