Incidentally, the mutabile part of the name, meaning variable, refers not to its performance but to the colour change of the flowers, which, as you say, open pale yellow and gradually fade to a mauve-ish pink.

It is an extremely beautiful wallflower, but alas as you and I have found, variable in quite the wrong way.

Mole spurge

Q: Were hoping you can help us. We first noticed a curious seedling when it was about 2in high. It is now some 5ft high and 3ft across with odd green flowers. We have no idea what it is or where it came from, and have been unable to find it in our reference books. Can you shed any light on what it might be, please?

A: The plant in the picture that accompanied your email is called mole plant (Euphorbia lathyris), and is generally regarded as a weed of waste ground. Even if you are enjoying it (from the tone of your email, it seems that initial curiosity has given way to a certain amount of alarm), you should take care around it because the milky sap is a skin irritant. It is a biennial (just leaves in the first year, rapid expansion and flowers in the second, followed by the shedding of masses of seeds and death). If you let it seed around this year, you will get a small forest of seedlings next year that will flower in 2016.

Some people really like this wild plant and encourage it to grow in gardens because it has a certain architectural quality, especially in its leafy first year.

There are those who mistakenly believe that somehow its presence in the garden will deter moles (the in-the-ground type). The truth is that the common names mole plant or mole spurge came about because in former times the irritant sap was used to burn off moles (the on-the-skin kind).

Those nasty caterpillars again

On the July 26 subject of readers nasty little caterpillars (destructive in the foliage of birch and alder trees). Andrew Halstead from the RHS has gently pointed out to me that I have got my bugs and thugs a tad confused. The little black beetles and their offspring on the alder are Agelastica alni, while the loopy caterpillars responsible for the birch leaf devastation are the larvae of geometrid moths. The bit I didnt get wrong was the fact that neither is life-threatening to either tree. My apologies for the error and thanks goes as always to all those observant readers like Andrew, who really do deserve to be called experts.

Rehoboth Beach Save Our Lakes Alliance3 will ring in its 10th anniversary with a celebration Saturday, Aug. 16.

For founder Sallie Forman, the 10th anniversary was a chance to look back and ahead.

Looking back at the highlights of our accomplishments, we thought, Wow, weve done a lot, she said. Theres a lot more to be done.

SOLA3, with the three referring to Rehoboths three lakes Lake Gerar, Silver Lake and Lake Comegys was a case of citizen activism in action. In 2004, Forman, who lives at Lake Comegys, banded with other homeowners to protest three townhouses being built right on the edge of the lake.

We didnt think that was a good thing, she said.

After failing to make much headway with the developers, the community organized to help manage the lakes.

First up was Lake Gerar, which was in bad shape, she said, plagued by pollution and algae blooms. Working with city officials and Envirotech, SOLA3 helped secure a state grant to restore the shoreline with a natural vegetative buffer and install aerators.

Next, SOLA3 moved on to Lake Comegys, where the group lobbied Delaware Department of Transportation to convert an old DelDOT right-of-way into a conservation easement, giving all properties along Lake Comegys a setback from the lake.

Perhaps SOLA3's most important success, Forman said, was that state officials, under the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, have acknowledged ownership of Silver Lake. Forman said SOLA3 pushed hard to resolve the issue of who owns Silver Lake, which for years had been split between Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach and Sussex County. Using a 1978 public lands survey researched and presented by SOLA3 attorney Gene Lawson, DNREC acknowledged in February 2013 that it owned Silver Lake up to the shoreline.

New 'Feng Shui' a continuation of 2004 hit

MANILA - The new "Feng Shui" movie will be titled just that, lead star Kris Aquino revealed on Tuesday during a story conference for the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry.

According to Aquino, her upcoming horror film will be a continuation of the 2004 blockbuster also directed by Chito Rono. Star Cinema will produce anew.

This time, the actress will be joined by "Ikaw Lamang" star Coco Martin, who will portray a hardworking man who will suffer the same misfortune as Aquino's character in the original "Feng Shui."

Also reprising their roles in the 2014 movie are Cherry Pie Picache and Joonee Gamboa. New cast members include Carmi Martin, Ian Veneracion, Joem Bascon, and Martin Escudero.

Meanwhile, Aquino said she would gladly settle for No. 2 in the box-office race at this year's MMFF, noting that her son, Bimby, will also be competing via the Vice Ganda-starrer "Praybeyt Benjamin 2."

She said Martin would also not mind conceding the top spot, pointing out his close ties with Vice Ganda. Martin has referred to the comedian as his best friend even before he joined showbiz.

Filming for "Feng Shui" will start in the last week of August, Aquino said.

Why Kris will settle for No. 2 in MMFF

MANILA A feng shui practitioner shed light on the reason Chinese people generally avoid holding major events during the Ghost Month, which usually falls on the month of August.

Speaking to radio DZMM on Monday, Dr. Anthony Fugoso said the Ghost Month is believed to be the time when souls are released from the gates of hell and into the human realm.

According to Fugoso, the souls are given one month to roam the earth and be fed by human beings through food and other offerings.

He said that somewhere along the way, the souls may bring bad luck to couples, families, homes and business ventures out of envy.

Ang mga Chinese stories sinasabi na yang Ghost Month na tinatawag, ito ang ika-7 buwan sa lunar calendar. Binubuksan daw ang sinasabing gates of hell, parang hinahayaang lumabas ang mga kaluluwa para makabisita sa kanilang mga [kamag-anak], Fugoso explained.

[Kaya ang mga tao] Nag-aalay ng mga pagkain o kahit tubig kasi sinasabing hungry o thirsty sila. Pinapayagan silang bumalik para kumain sa pamamagitan ng mga pagbigay ng mga kamag-anak o mga offering ng pagkain, he added. O kaya minsan, nakikita niyo sa mga Chinese, nagsusunog sila ng papel o bahay na papel para pagbalik nila (kaluluwa), meron silang baon mula sa mundo.

While he admitted that there is no clear evidence to prove the bad luck associated with Ghost Month, Fugoso said the Chinese find it better to be on the safe side and avoid any important activities such as getting married, undergoing surgery, moving to a new home, launching a new business or traveling long distances.

The feng shui practitioner also encouraged Filipinos to do the same unless the activity or event is urgent.

Kung may pagkakataon ka na kaya mong iwasan ay huwag mo nang gawin [sa Agosto] Pwede namang i-delay. Kung di emergency ang inyong operasyon, pwede mong i-delay next month. Or pwede ka namang humanap ng ibang buwan para ikasal, he said.

Still, Fugoso said not all people experience misfortune during the Ghost Month, citing his uncle and aunt who celebrated their golden wedding anniversary this August.

Years of struggle came to fruition Friday as Shaffer Road residents rejoiced as they watched the paving of their road.

Four years of fighting and praying finally coming to completion, said Steve Harnick, a resident of West Shaffer Road in Sanford.

Four years ago next month began a long and difficult wait for the asphalt to be laid on this one mile stretch. On Friday the asphalt was a welcome sight to Harnick and his neighbors.

In years past, signs along the side of the road were not as friendly. This time around, a new set of signs adorned the roadside signs of gratitude, right next to Fridays victory barbecue.

One sign read: Thank you Comish Finley, MCRC Manager Mr. Gupta, MDN Editor Mr. Telfer & Sam, (referring to Sam SanMigel, Midland County Road Commission superintendent).

For the first time in four years, Linda Friend and Susan Harnick were finally able to walk the entire length of the road without fear of potentially hazardous road dust.

Even members of the crew laying the asphalt were smiling. The workers had obtained this sign from the road: We love asphalt, and attached it to their vehicle. Harnick quickly grabbed the camera next to him, explaining how the whole process had been documented, and he shared the photos of the sign on the truck.

The road that Harnick and his neighbors live on was in need of repairs and was later pulverized a few years back. At the time, however, the road was not sealed and the dust particles that remained contributed to numerous concerns.

It was a safety hazard, a rust hazard, a health hazard, said resident Mike Weaver.

Weaver owns property on the south side of the road, across from Harnick.
