Girls on the Run registration

Registration for the fall season of Girls on the Run, a program hosted by the Casco Bay YMCA, is now open. Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in third through fifth grade. Life skills are taught through interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.

The team meets twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m. for 10 weeks and will begin on Sept. 9. The program fee is $130 and financial assistance is available. For more information or to register, see http://girlsontherunmaine.org/.

Wild Bird Supply celebrating 10 years

Jeannette and Derek Lovitch, owners of Freeport Wild Bird Supply, 541 Route 1, are marking their 10th year of providing products, knowledge and services for wild-bird enthusiasts of all levels. A full weekend of events has been planned for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23-24, to celebrate and thank the community. Saturdays lineup begins with a free bird walk at 8 a.m. (meet at the store). In the afternoon, the Chewonki Foundation will give two presentations: The Bugmobile at 1:45 and Owls of Maine at 3:30. This is an opportunity for both kids and adults to see some insects and owls up close.

Throughout the weekend, door prizes and gifts will be given away. Free Birds and Beans coffee will be on hand from Wicked Joe Coffee Roasting Co., in addition to some other treats. All events are free and open to the public. No advance reservations needed.

Freeport Players plan anniversary picnic

Freeport Players is inviting all former cast members, crew and volunteers from 25 years of live theater in Freeport, to the biggest cast party in the world a potluck picnic on Sunday, Aug. 17, starting at noon, at Winslow Park in the Moose Lodge Shelter. There is no charge and the admission fee to the park will be waived. The event will be held rain or shine.

Those attending should bring something to grill and if their last name begins with A-I, bring munchies and appetizers. Those whose last name begins with J-R should bring a salad or side dish, and those whose last name begins with S-Z should bring fruit or cookies. All should bring your own beverages, and no alcohol is allowed. The Freeport Players will provide all paper goods, condiments, birthday cake, door prizes and raffle items.

US demand for siding is forecast to rise 7.1 percent yearly to 103.5 million squares in 2018, valued at $12.1 billion, according to the forecasting company Freedonia. As is the case with many building materials, an expected rebound in construction activity will be the primary driver for growth. For siding, the link to new housing is particularly strong, given that nearly every home in the US features exterior cladding. (In contrast, most nonresidential buildings opt for curtain walls or unclad structural walls). Homeowners are increasingly turning to lower maintenance, more durable siding materials such as fiber cement, brick, EIFS, and stone, although all siding products are expected to benefit from the forecast recovery in new housing completions. Also adding to gains will be continued growth in the key replacement market, which accounted for 57 percent of sales in 2013. Vinyl will remain the leading replacement siding by far but will continue to be challenged by newer materials with better performance characteristics.

Brick, concrete & stone siding to see fastest growth Among material types, brick, concrete, and stone siding are expected to see the most rapid advances in demand going forward. Brick siding demand will be driven by increasing residential building construction in the South, where the material is most commonly specified because of its favorable aesthetics and long tradition of use in the region. Moreover, home builders across the US are expected to increasingly install brick siding because of its desirable appearance, long lifespan, and fire resistance. Concrete and stone siding is widely used in both residential and nonresidential structures. Concrete blocks can be utilized to provide functional yet durable exterior cladding, while precast concrete panels and synthetic stone veneers are specified to recreate the look of more costly siding materials -- such as brick or natural stone -- at a lower cost. Vinyl siding accounted for the largest share of siding demand in 2013; however, vinyl siding has seen its share of the US market fall from 39 percent in 2003 to 27 percent in 2013. Vinyl siding has faced strong competition from various other materials -- such as fiber cement, stucco, and wood -- seen as more aesthetically pleasing. Going forward, vinyl siding will remain the leading material installed in the US because of its low cost, long lifespan, and minimal maintenance needs. However, vinyl siding will continue to lose market share to materials seen as better able to improve the exterior appearance of residences.

Residential market to regain leading share status Residential improvement and repair applications were the leading siding market in 2013, indicative of the low level of housing completions in that year. However, going forward, the new residential market is expected to regain its leading market position in 2018 as housing completions rise rapidly from their low base. Residential improvement and repair demand for siding will exhibit solid growth as homeowners who put off re-siding projects during the 2007-2009 recession will do them going forward. Nonresidential demand for siding is forecast to grow 6.8 percent per annum to 25.0 million squares in 2018, driven by rebounding nonresidential building construction. The commercial and lodging and office segments saw the steepest demand declines between 2008 and 2013, and will thus post the fastest advances through 2018. Improving economic conditions will spur the construction of shopping malls, hotels, resorts, restaurants, and offices.

Consumer Reports, like Edmunds, plunked down the coin for a new Model S to get the full ownership experience. And like Edmunds, CR's Tesla has suffered from a range of minor issues that continue to illustrate that the devil is in the details.

Since taking delivery of its Model S, Consumer Reports has racked up nearly 16,000 miles at the hands of testers and staffers, and they're still singing the Tesla's praises. But that enthusiasm is beginning to wane after the retractable door handles failed to deploy, one of the third row buckles broke, the front trunk lid wouldn't open, and the center screen which controls damn near everything went blank.

The door handle situation was handled with an over-the-air update, while the buckle and trunk lid were replaced under warranty. A "hard reset" was necessary to bring the screen back to life, and while it was in for service, the shop "fixed a creak emanating from the passenger side roof-pillar area, disassembling and refitting some trim panels."

But what's more interesting about CR's experience is the number of voluntary fixes Tesla is doing while the car is in for service. It replaced the "front bumper carrier hardware", along with the 12-volt battery, the coolant pump that keeps the battery pack chilled, and the HVAC filter housing. Since CR's car apparently didn't suffer from any issues with these assorted bits, it seems that Tesla knew of issues ahead of time and took proactive measures. And it's nothing compared to the laundry list of issues Edmunds dealt with including three drivetrain replacements during it's long-term Tesla test.

CR is quick to point out that the service experience has been top-notch, with Tesla picking up the car and providing a loaner (CR declines, since it has a fleet). And while its car is a sample size of one, last year's auto-reliability survey based on consumer experience pegged Tesla as "average". We'll see if that changes when CR's next study comes out this fall.

STANFORD, Calif.

Children being treated at Stanfords Lucile Packard Childrens Hospital got a special treat when they looked out their windows Monday.

Hanging from a harness from the roof were several of their favorite superheroes.

It was an annual visit created by the window washers at Delta Window Cleaning in Santa Clara. Three of their employees don Spiderman, Superman and Batman outfits and scale down to entertain the children while they work.

Its difficult for children to be in the hospital, said hospital spokeswoman Winter Johnson. We want to make staying at the hospital a magical experience.

From the smiles all around, it definitely proved to be a magical day for the young patients. "It's a simple way for us to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary," said Andrew Rich, director of housekeeping. "We know these legends will brighten everyone's day."
