Girls on the Run registration

Registration for the fall season of Girls on the Run, a program hosted by the Casco Bay YMCA, is now open. Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in third through fifth grade. Life skills are taught through interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.

The team meets twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m. for 10 weeks and will begin on Sept. 9. The program fee is $130 and financial assistance is available. For more information or to register, see http://girlsontherunmaine.org/.

Wild Bird Supply celebrating 10 years

Jeannette and Derek Lovitch, owners of Freeport Wild Bird Supply, 541 Route 1, are marking their 10th year of providing products, knowledge and services for wild-bird enthusiasts of all levels. A full weekend of events has been planned for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23-24, to celebrate and thank the community. Saturdays lineup begins with a free bird walk at 8 a.m. (meet at the store). In the afternoon, the Chewonki Foundation will give two presentations: The Bugmobile at 1:45 and Owls of Maine at 3:30. This is an opportunity for both kids and adults to see some insects and owls up close.

Throughout the weekend, door prizes and gifts will be given away. Free Birds and Beans coffee will be on hand from Wicked Joe Coffee Roasting Co., in addition to some other treats. All events are free and open to the public. No advance reservations needed.

Freeport Players plan anniversary picnic

Freeport Players is inviting all former cast members, crew and volunteers from 25 years of live theater in Freeport, to the biggest cast party in the world a potluck picnic on Sunday, Aug. 17, starting at noon, at Winslow Park in the Moose Lodge Shelter. There is no charge and the admission fee to the park will be waived. The event will be held rain or shine.

Those attending should bring something to grill and if their last name begins with A-I, bring munchies and appetizers. Those whose last name begins with J-R should bring a salad or side dish, and those whose last name begins with S-Z should bring fruit or cookies. All should bring your own beverages, and no alcohol is allowed. The Freeport Players will provide all paper goods, condiments, birthday cake, door prizes and raffle items.
