SANDY A faulty sprinkler system at a northern Utah middle school has flooded an auditorium and destroyed computers.
Eastmont Middle School spokeswoman Jennifer Toomer-Cook tells the Deseret News (http://bit.ly/1oe7hoe) officials discovered the break Wednesday.
She says several inches of water flowed into the first floor auditorium and pooled at the stage.
Crews this week cut have electricity to the building because water also seeped into boiler room transformers.
Sandy Fire Battalion Chief Chris Dawson estimates the damage at $500,000.
He says a trench for a school construction project directed the water toward the auditorium.
Toomer-Cooke says insurance will cover the cost of repairs. She says the building will be ready by the first day of school on Aug. 20.
The Utah Division of Risk Management is conducting a safety inspection.

SANDY A sprinkler line break has flooded Eastmont Middle School, doing a possible half-million dollars' worth of damage just three weeks before classes are scheduled to resume.
The break in a sprinkler line that irrigates the school's lawn was discovered early Wednesday morning. Several inches of water flowed into the building's first floor and did extensive damage to the auditorium, where water ran down the large sloped room and pooled at the stage.
"The damage is pretty significant. We had considerable amounts of water all through the lower floor," said Canyons School District spokeswoman Jennifer Toomer-Cook. "We did have damage in the auditorium to seating and the stage area that we need to get taken care of."
Electricity to the building has been cut and is expected to be kept off for several days due to water that seeped into the boiler room transformers. The system must be recertified for use before power can be restored.
A number of new computers in the school's media center were also caught in the flood. Replacements will be covered under the district's insurance policy.
"It's so unfortunate that that happened," Toomer-Cook said. "We're just so grateful that our insurance will cover it, and we expect to have everything fully replaced by the time school starts."
Sandy Fire Battalion Chief Chris Dawson said crews were called to the school about 5:30 a.m. and assisted with shutting off the water. Crews didn't do a formal damage assessment, but the battalion chief who responded Wednesday initially estimated damage could reach a half-million dollars.
A trench that had been dug for a separate water line channeled the water into the school, Dawson said.

LeSean McCoy has stopped eating Doritos at midnight. That's part of the Eagles running back's emphasis on nutrition, which helped him drop four to seven pounds this offseason in an effort to become even quicker.
McCoy led the NFL with 1,607 rushing yards last season, but apparently that was not enough. He wanted to be lighter. McCoy has trimmed down to about 209 pounds.
"I felt like last year, even with the year I did have, it was based on guys up front really blocking well and [me] just going off God-given talent," McCoy said. "I feel like at a lighter [weight], I'm so much more effective. I look at my old film and see how much quicker I was when I was 210, 209. It's a big difference. And I'm feeling like that again."
This was different than the "best-shape-of-my-life" declarations that often come from training camp or spring training, in part because the observation actually came unprompted from offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur. When discussing quarterback Matt Barkley, Shurmur said Barkley and McCoy were the two players whose bodies had changed the most during the time off.
"Maybe it was just being away from [McCoy] for a while," Shurmur said. "He just looked good."
It turned out Shurmur was on to something. McCoy wanted to be "bulkier" last season. The results were evident, but McCoy thought coach Chip Kelly's offense required more quickness. His objective was to boost his metabolism for this season.
"Everything is about portions," McCoy said. "I'm not eating Doritos with the sauce at 12 o'clock at night. Small portions. A lot more meals."
McCoy said the weight loss was not a directive from the team's staff, which is specific about fitness and nutrition. He explained that he took the initiative. Even if his production suggested an elite running back, McCoy said he knows his own body, how it should feel, and the benefits of being bulky or light.

WACO (July 31, 2014) A vandal set the fire that destroyed one storage shed and heavily damaged a second shed outside of the Midway ISDs $600,000 agriculture barn early Thursday morning, Hewitt police Chief Jim Devin said.
The suspect vandalized a fan in the barn and the surveillance images show him hugging and petting, but not harming some of the animals inside.
The vandal set fire to the two storage sheds, which were built by students at a cost of $5,000 to $6,000 each, Midway ISD Superintendent Dr. George Kazanas said.
Police described the suspect as a tall white male with tattoos who was wearing a sleeveless black T-shirt known as a wife beater, and a ball cap.
The fire was reported at around 4:40 a.m. Thursday at the Midway ISD FFA Agricultural Science Instructional Facility at 10401 Panther Way.
Flames engulfed the sheds when the first crew arrived, Assistant Waco Fire Chief Patrick Kerwin said.
Hewitt firefighters arrived shortly afterward to assist in battling the flames.
Firefighters had the fire under control in less than 10 minutes but they didnt leave the scene until after 6 a.m., Kerwin said.
Both buildings, approximately 10-by-12 feet in size, were used to store feed and hay, Kerwin said.
The barn and the storage sheds occupy a 20-acre site off Panther Way.

Carolina Bagel Company & Deli, a popular New Bern breakfast and lunch restaurant, plans to reopen Monday. Stephan Dentico works from his ladder adjusting AC vents, while Lee Hiner and Brandon Shorer of Bruin Builders, LLC, discuss numbers during an afternoon of construction.
Carolina Bagel Company & Deli, a popular New Bern breakfast and lunch restaurant at 3601 Trent Road, is nearing completion of a major renovation and plans to reopen Monday.
Jeff Wood, part-owner with Charlie Lofurno of Carolina Bagel at Village Square Shopping Center atthe intersections ofTrentand Glenburnie roads, said a grand opening is scheduled for Aug. 7.
Wood said to his knowledge this is the first total renovation Carolina Bagel has received since it opened in 1995. He and Lofurno bought the restaurant in 2008 from the previous owners.
Weve painted and done some minor things (over the past six years), he said. But a complete restoration has never been done. We are real excited about it.
Everything in the restaurant is being renovated except the seating capacity, food and family atmosphere, Wood said.
Unfortunately we cant expand the seating, Wood said. The restaurant has a seating capacity of 62.
But customers loyal and new will find a new ceiling, floor, freshly painted walls, new furniture and bathrooms, Wood said.
Its just a new look, he said. I think for the long-term and new customers the most dramatic change will be the floor. We are going from a tile floor to a hard-wood floor. As we see the progress taking place, which is long overdue, we are both excited about it.
Wood said his contractor, Lee Hiner with Bruin Builders of New Bern, has already done a phenomenal job with the renovations.

MACHIAS, Maine The Machias Planning Board quickly approved a permit Monday night to allow the owners of Helens Restaurant to rebuild after a fire that destroyed the landmark business earlier this month.
The panel, meeting in a special session that lasted just over 10 minutes, voted 5-0 to issue the permit to residents David and Julie Barker.
The Barkers answered a few brief questions from board members.
The restaurant will be located near the former building on the site, next to U.S. Route 1, but the square footage and parking area will be smaller. In addition, seating capacity will be smaller, allowing for 125 customers compared with 180 in the old building.
The Barkers said they are uncertain when construction will begin and they have not yet selected a general contractor for the project.
In the permit application, they estimated the new building would cost $1 million or more to construct. The application included a preliminary sketch depicting the layout of the building interior, which shows a slightly different configuration than the previous structure.
Investigators from the state fire marshals office were unable to pinpoint the cause of the early morning fire on July 11.
Firefighters from several nearby communities were summoned to the blaze but were unable to save the restaurant. Guests at the nearby Machias Motor Inn were evacuated but that building was saved.
The restaurant employed about 50 workers at the time of the fire. An online fundraising campaign to benefit workers, which had a goal of $20,000, has collected more than $30,000. A number of benefit activities also are being planned in the community to raise more funds for the restaurant employees.
State officials have waived a requirement that affected employees look for jobs while they collect unemployment benefits, a move that will allow them to be available to return to work when the restaurant reopens.
