RACINE When the city hired contractors to replace the roof at Festival Hall in 2012, the copper color of the roof drew criticism from locals.
Now, nearly two years later, public works officials are looking to spend roughly $200,000 to replace the roof that covers the halls outdoor colonnade or pavilion, at 5 Fifth St.
The roof, which is still teal, had originally been slated to be replaced in 2016, Public Works Commissioner Mark Yehlen said, but there is extra money to make the replacement this year because the bid on an upcoming roof repair at the citys transit maintenance facility came in well below the $400,000 that had been set aside for the job.
We just opened bids last week and it came in a lot less, Yehlen said, adding that the $400,000 had been set aside because officials feared there might be extensive structural work.
On Tuesday, the Public Works and Services Committee voted to recommend paying Kaschak Roofing Inc., $134,276 to re-roof the transit maintenance facility, while also asking that the City Council approve spending $12,950 to hire Industrial Roofing Services Inc. to design the replacement of the Festival Hall colonnade roof.
It is the original equipment, Yehlen said of the colonnade roof. It is past its useful service life.
Carlson Racine Roofing and Sheeting was the contractor hired to replace the roof at the main Festival Hall building in 2012. Work on the roof began in late August of that year and was completed about two months later.
According to city documents, the final cost to replace the roof of the Festival Hall building came to $544,150.
Yehlen said that if the estimate to replace the colonnade roof comes in at what his department hopes it will, he would like to see work begin there by the end of the year.
Asked Monday what color the roof would be, Yehlen said: Oh God, oh please, make it copper.
