After weeks of clearing asbestos from inside the sanctuary, crews have begun tearing down historic Friendship Baptist Church to make way for the new Atlanta Falcons stadium.
Church members stopped by the demolition site Monday to try and get a piece of history.
For a few church members, it was a day of mixed emotions.
What it took years and years and years to build, Ive watched torn down in a matter of hours, said interim pastor Emmanuel McCall.
Thousands of pounds of machinery spent the day Monday knocking down decades of history. Friendship Baptist Church, Atlantas oldest African-American Baptist church, fell down quickly has the demolition began just after 8 a.m.
It produced people that were extraordinary. And it not only changed Atlanta, it changed the country, state Sen. Vincent Fort said.
Before a new $1 billion new Falcons stadium can be built, the plan calls for two historic churches to be torn down.
Friendship Baptist was sold for $19.5 million.
Were planning very well for the future so this community will see another Friendship. Bigger, stronger, better, McCall said.
Some church members took home bricks from the churchs foundation Monday.

Preparations for the demolition of the Fabens-Caseta Bridge are in place as the opening of the Tornillo-Guadalupe international bridge is on the horizon.
El Paso County Commissioners Court on Monday approved an agreement with Structural Engineering Associates Inc., to document the bridge's history and to test it for hazardous materials while also devising a plan for demolition of the Fabens-Caseta Bridge.
The move was just a formality as the bridge, which is owned by the federal government and operated by the International Boundary and Water Commission, has already been designated for demolition one year after the new bridge opens, which should be by the end of this year.
The Fabens-Caseta bridge is a two-lane bridge that will make way for the six-lane international bridge, which cost about $133 million to build on the U.S. side.
El Paso County and state officials will have a public meeting at 6 p.m. today at 1331 N. Fabens in Fabens to update the public on the second phase of construction that will connect Interstate-10 to the Tornillo-Guadalupe international bridge.
Commissioner Vince Perez, who represents Precinct 3, where the bridge is located, said the important thing was an update on the construction of the Mexican side of the bridge which is nearly complete after multiple delays.
"I always said that once they get started (on the Mexican side) it was going to go up pretty quick," Perez said. "They don't have as much of a lengthy process when it comes to permits and other items."
Perez said he is breathing a sigh of relief now that the project is almost complete after more than a decade of planning.
"These types of projects are once in a lifetime projects," he said.

Can your roof affect the resale value and curb appeal of your home? Absolutely. That's why DaVinci Roofscapes, the color leader in the polymer roofing industry, is celebrating National Curb Appeal Month in August by sharing information and tips on creating an impactful and impressive roof.
"The roof plays a major role in creating curb appeal because it can be up to 30 percent of what you see as you approach a home," says Kate Smith, president of Sensational Color. "Homeowners should make a conscious effort to blend the color of their roofing material with other elements of the home exterior to create an overall cohesive look."
Smith, who has authored the free online FRESH Home Exterior Colors and FRESH Color Schemes for Your Home Exterior guides, spends a good deal of her time advising homeowners, remodelers and builders on selecting the perfect colors for the exterior of the home.
"For curb appeal it's all about creating 'top down' color by working from the roof down through the different elements of the exterior such as siding, windows, trim and doors," says Smith. "For example, a colonial style home with a warm Autumn Blend polymer shake roof could be ideally matched with a home exterior in a neutral stone color. Then, for adding 'pops of color' for curb appeal, chocolate brown frames could be added on the vinyl windows, shutters and trim around the home. A stand-out color like pine green or marine blue could be added to the entry door to add personality to the exterior.
"However, it's important to remember that it all starts on the roof. When you're working 'top down' with unlimited color options from a company like DaVinci Roofscapes, a homeowner has an open palette for designing the perfect home exterior."
National Curb Appeal Month How important is curb appeal to homeowners? More than three-quarters of U.S. homeowners* (78 percent) report that their homes curb appeal is either extremely or very important to them.
According to the 2011 DaVinci Roofscapes Homeowners Exterior Preferences Study conducted online by Harris Interactive, 61 percent of homeowners say that when house hunting or designing their home, the most attention-grabbing exterior feature was the style of the home, followed by how the house looked on the property (43 percent).
And, when it comes to adding curb appeal to a home, color counts. Fifty-nine percent of homeowners place a lot of emphasis on the role that color plays when they think about replacing major exterior home features. Color availability is so important to homeowners that a majority of them (54 percent) are influenced to buy a specific brand of product based on the color options available from that brand.
This study shows us clearly that color influences homeowners buying patterns and decision processes when it comes to exterior home features, says Smith. People want their home to be appealing from the street and theyre looking for colorful key products --- such as the roof, door, trim, siding and windows --- that will help them create the impression they wish to convey on their home.

MaxLite, Inc 12 York Ave. West Caldwell, NJ, 07006 USA Press release date: July 25, 2014
West Caldwell, N.J. MaxLite has launched a new line of ENERGY STAR-certified LED Architectural Recessed Downlights for new construction applications that require superior lighting performance, flexible installation options and an extended, maintenance-free lifetime.
An energy-efficient alternative to HID, fluorescent and traditional incandescent fixtures, the downlights come in a variety of aperture sizes, color temperatures and wattages. They install like a traditional recessed fixture and are supplied with a quick connect LED module, which simplifies the electrical installation after the ceiling is finished. The architectural fixtures provide up to a five-inch vertical adjustment.
Our downlight fixtures are the obvious choice for commercial applications, said Ken Charton, MaxLite product marketing manager. Customers benefit by significantly reducing maintenance and energy costs, while enjoying high quality, controllable light by upgrading to LED.
The non-IC LED downlights are energy-efficient replacements for 50-watt halogen, 39-watt ceramic metal halide, and 100-watt HID fixtures. Available in 3000K and 4000K correlated color temperatures (CCTs), the four-inch model is available in 15 and 26 watts while six- and eight-inch styles are offered in 15, 26 and 34 watts, with up to 2145 lumens delivered.
A unique optic allows high lumen transmission and diffusion for even illumination while concealing the LED light source, resulting in efficient lighting and minimal glare. The versatile housing is designed to accommodate a half-inch electrical metal tubing (EMT) conduit, C channel, T-Grid or concealed spline ceilings for a cleaner look on the ceiling plane. An optional hanger bar kit is available for standard grid and drywall ceilings.
The fixtures operate on universal 120 to 277-volt power supply systems, with full-range triac dimming capabilities down to five percent when used on a 120-volt circuit. The fixtures are damp listed and suitable for use in most ceilings, soffits and eaves.
The LED Architectural Recessed Downlights join MaxLites extensive list of ENERGY STAR certified products, which includes more than 250 lamp and fixture offerings.
