As the alpenglow of the setting sun shed a rosy hue over Young, porches filled up with residents flush with the warm good feelings from the events of the 25th Annual Pleasant Valley Days.
This tiny hamlet tucked between the Sierra Anchas and the Mogollon Rim has lusciously verdant grass that harkens to what Arizona looked like when cattle outfits first used the place to fatten up their cows for market in the late 1870s.
The three-day event introduces visitors to the most violent range war in American history.
As many as 50 people died during the 10 years of the war.
That included many hapless travelers crossing the valley between 1882 and 1892 who simply vanished, never to be seen again. The complicated struggle pitted the Grahams and their allies against the Tewksbury clan and their allies. The weekend event drew descendants of the Tewksburys, since the feud pretty much wiped out the Grahams. The complex series of shoot-outs, bushwhackings, beheadings, double-crosses and lynchings produced one of the most confusing, violent and lawless conflicts in the dark but romanticized history of the Wild West. In the process, Pleasant Valley became a refuge for rustlers. The conflict may have single-handedly delayed Arizona statehood for a decade.
The weekend proved considerably more peaceful.
Saturday started with a parade marshaled by the Pyles, Jinx and Jane. The two have each finished books on the Pleasant Valley War after years of exhaustive research.
After the parade, about 40 people trooped over to the Young Cemetery and Museum to hear a rendition of the war from local history teacher Pat Murdock. Others retired to the Young Community Center to watch the start of the roping contest.
Unlike todays modern organized rodeos, the Young roping contest involved anyone who could throw a rope and ride a horse, from pre-teens to retirees. Contestants milled about in the ring waiting to partner up with someone and go after their target, while their families sat under the shade of awnings next to horse trailers cheering on their favorites.

I do a live radio show in San Antonio on KKYX. My brother- in-law always does the show with us. He has a business called Acme Doors and More. He does remodeling. So he knows all the tricks of the trade.
I asked him what is his go to item that he must have in his business. I was expecting something that had to do with refinishing or stainin and he shows me a Zip It! A Zip It?
He has a daughter and a wife with long hair and both of the drains are always getting clogged with hair and soap. He takes the Zip It and pushes it down the drain and it easily makes the curve in the drain and pushes the clog down further in the line to where it can go down, and then you pull it up and bring up anything that didnt go down. No chemicals, environmentally safe, fast and easy and very inexpensive to use. A Zip It costs less than $4. So if you have a sink drain, tub or shower drain that gets clogged with hair and soap, keep a Zip It around under the sink. And just because you are not in San Antonio doesnt mean you cant listen to The Happy Handy Man Show every Saturday from 11-12. Just go to kkyx.com and then click on Listen Live. You will hear us every Saturday.

Question: Johnnie, I have a granite table that my son put the dog soap bottle on and it left a round stain that will not come off. What can I use to get it off?
Answer: Looking at the picture, it looks like a oil stain. There is only one product that I would feel safe using for that and its the Dupont Oil Stain Remover.
Question: Please me know what the name of the cat repellent is. They are digging in my flower beds.
Answer: Use the Messina Cat and Dog Stopper. It works well. Just remember to re-apply after you water, and when it starts getting real hot.
Question: Ive enjoyed your column for years. I have a cultured marble shower that I wipe down daily and well as the floor but suddenly Ill notice that the floor is very dark and dirty. I have tried soap scum removers but they do nothing. What can you suggest?

Although the most accurate way to describe her relationship to St. John Neumann Catholic Church would be business partner, you wouldnt think it when you see members of a church committee shout out to Francesca Lofaro as she runs toward them for a hug Friday morning in front of the under-construction chapel.
It was the first time all summer that those who are working on renovations for the church ceiling and the chapel had seen Lofaro, who is the New York-based sales rep for the Italian company the church is working with.
The renovations have brought together a group of people, several of which have traveled to Texas from Italy for the installation and forged unlikely friendships.
Weve had a great time, said committee member and parishioner Lucille Lamy.
When well be finished, well be really sad, said Massimo Mellini, speaking in a thick Italian accent.
Mellini is the president of the Florence-based artglass and mosaics company that designed the churchs mosaic and the chapels stained glass. He has been in town to oversee the installation, and he and the church committee chat about the renovations more like old friends than business partners.
Its no surprise the St. John Neumann Arts and Environs committee has been working on these projects since 2007, researching everything from church decorative precedents to the individual designs, said Joanne Senn, who handles parish development. They paid for trips to Florence out of their own pockets to collaborate and see some of the results.
They are inexhaustible, Senn said. There is no amount of detail that can be researched; there is no amount of time that can be applied.
Its worth it for such a mammoth undertaking, committee members said. St. John Neumann is holding Mass in the churchs adjacent Holy Family center for the summer as workers begin decorating the once-gray ceiling of the churchs dome, one of the largest in the country, Senn said.
When parishioners return in the fall, theyll see four huge angels, one mosaic in each corner. If they look up, theyll see a Lamb of God mosaic at the center of the churchs dome. But the ceiling will eventually be covered entirely in a mosaic of small pieces of colorful glass, when the project is completed in the summer of 2016, church planners said.

ONE hundred and fifty years ago, Camperdowns Anglican parishioners were eagerly watching as their new church building began to take shape on the corner of what is now known as Church and Fergusson streets.

ONE hundred and fifty years ago, Camperdowns Anglican parishioners were eagerly watching as their new church building began to take shape on the corner of what is now known as Church and Fergusson streets.
Today the church looks a little different compared to when the first service was held in August of 1864. But the original nave, with its exquisite stained glass windows, has stood the test of the time and on August 17 parishioners will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first service held in the imposing bluestone walls of St Pauls church.
Parishioner and historian Susan Cole said construction of the church started in April of 1864, and was completed in August of the same year. She said the nave was completed first, followed by the French Gothic style transepts, crossing and vaulted apsidal sanctuary in 1894.
The tower and spire were added in 1955.
Mrs Cole said the church has stood the test of time due to many generous benefactors.
The Manifold family especially have been huge supporters of the church and the building across the generations, she said.
Many sections of the church were added in memory of members of the Manifold family. The choir area and altar area were added in 1894 in memory of Mr and Mrs John Manifold and the tower and spire are in memory of Edward and Beatrice Manifold.

Dursley church and youth centre buoyed by donations
2:20pm Wednesday 23rd July 2014 in News
A CHURCH in Dursley has been awarded several thousand pounds to go towards vital repairs and towards supporting the town's new youth centre.
Dursley Tabernacle Church was visited by Jonathan MacKechnie-Jarvis from the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust and presented minister Rev Simon Helme with a 7,000 cheque, which will go towards urgent repairs to the fabric of their listed building.
Mr Jarvis acknowledged the challenges maintaining an elderly church premises brings and said how pleased the trust was to be able to support it with the demands of maintaining the heritage property.
In addition, he commended the church for committing itself to putting forward funding for the new youth centre being built nearby.
The church on Parsonage Street requires repairs to the roof and other parts of the building, which are necessary for the adjacent youth centre to be protected.
The roof leak could potentially jeopardise the new youth centre with water run off.
The church has been further buoyed by a cheque for 2,000 from Renishaw towards their share of the construction costs for the new youth centre.
Renishaw Charity Committee chairman Jeremy Chamberlain explained how pleased they were to support a project in Dursley which would benefit young people.
