Cats of All Sizes Need Help to Stay Hydrated

    - July 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

From whiskers and night vision to paws with retractable claws house, cats and lions have a lot in common, including the tendency to become dehydrated.

Their sandpaper tongues are great for grooming but are not meant to lap up water. A feline body is meant to extract its hydration from its food.

Just as house cats are fed commercial foods and need another source of water, captive lions also need extra water.

"We basically check their water all the time, because they hydration is super important. We make sure they always have water, clean water, fresh water so we monitor it constantly because that is a big thing with them. They definitely need to have their water," said Jeff Taylor, owner and operator of The Wild Animal Park in Chittenango, N.Y.

Through computer simulation and watching slow motion video of cats drinking, researchers at MIT discovered that big cats and house cats just use the tip of their tongue to drink by bending the tip under to draw water in while lapping up the liquid. House cats lap four times per second, while lions lap just twice per second.

To help your cats get more water, try mixing soft food with hard food. Give them a cat fountain and try placing bowls at different heights.

Wellington's street-connecting walkways could be better – study

    - July 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Graffiti, litter, and insufficient lighting and signage on Wellingtons street-connecting walkways are likely to be discouraging their use, researchers say.

A University of Otago, Wellington study of 118 of the Capitals street-connecting walkways found graffiti was commonly visible (51% of walkways), as was litter (58%). Litter involving glass was present on 17% of walkways. On walkways with guttering, most (89%) were overflowing in at least one place with plant debris or living plants.

Lighting was often "insufficient" at walkway entrances, with only 20% having lighting at both entrances. In addition, only 3% of walkways with steps had step edges painted to assist with visibility at night.

Lead author of the study, Associate Professor Nick Wilson, says good urban design, including street connectivity, is important to encourage walking, which in turn helps prevent chronic illness such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

"These conditions account for a large share of health loss for New Zealand, and are major costs for the tax-payer funded health system," Wilson says.

Wellington City Council "could do better" with walkway maintenance and monitoring of the state of walkways, including engaging the public to help identify improvements needed, he says.

"A public monitoring system that enables people to report issues using, for example, free mobile apps, a text or picture message, or a website to report problems, would help Councils manage and respond to issues efficiently. But even the form used in this study could be used by the public."

Some potential improvements to walkways would be fairly low cost, Wilson says.

"Improved signage would be inexpensive, and greater use of motion-sensitive and highly-directional LED lighting would both improve lighting and reduce electricity and maintenance costs."

He suggests central government could play a greater role in funding research on the most cost-effective approaches to walkway improvements throughout New Zealand, and could also work with councils on establishing monitoring systems that the public can easily participate in.

Venetian Falls Turns To Leesburg Concrete Company, Inc. For Pump House Solution

    - July 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Leesburg Concrete Company, Incorporated (LCCI) delivered a large floorless precast concrete Easi-Set Building to be placed over the rebuilt pump station used by the upscale community, Venetian Falls, in Venice, Florida. The custom 18' x 13 ' x 8' precast concrete building with post tensioned roof was delivered, lifted and lowered over the pump station onto an expanded concrete slab floor in less than 1 day. "The Venetian Falls community did not want to be without well water in excess of one day so our Easi-Set Building offered just the solution they needed," said Brian Stock. "In addition they did not want to disconnect the well intake pipes if it was avoidable. We manufactured the precast building with a cutaway and a custom fit precast panel to adjoin and seal the void once installed to finish the wall. All of it was done with a skip trowel finish and custom paint to match the community's colors."

The pump house building was manufactured with a custom 5' x 5' clear opening galvanized double door roof hatch with a powder coated red oxide finish. The precast roof was painted with a reflective CVM (Ceramic Vacuum Matrix) technology coating which reflects 80% of the sun rays resulting in much cooler interior temperatures.

Leesburg Concrete makes the largest selection of transportable standard and custom precast concrete buildings in the Southeast United States.

    Leesburg Concrete Company, Incorporated

Family owned and operated since 1983, Leesburg Concrete Company, Incorporated was first a leading manufacturer of precast concrete steps decks, walkways, landings, and ADA compliant modular precast concrete wheelchair ramps, with steel guard rails, and handrails. They also manufacture Easi-Set Buildings, Easi-Span field assembled large and ultra-large buildings and Easi-Set restrooms, feature a patented post-tensioning system in the roof and floor, architectural precast cladding panels and precast concrete stairs. LCCI also offers a wide array of custom precast product options. "We've never had a job that we couldn't handle," stated Kirk Rouse, Vice President of LCCI. This American, family-owned company demonstrates a philosophy of quality and innovation.

Leesburg Concrete Company, Incorporated is an NPCA Certified Plant, focused on meeting the needs of commercial building construction and renovation projects. Their experienced staff provides turnkey service, and it only takes one call to find the solution to your building needs. For more information visit their website at http://www.leesburgconcrete.com, (800) 882-4177, or KRouse@leesburgconcrete.com.

    Easi-Set Buildings

Fabricated as separate wall, roof and floor panels, Easi-Set Buildings, Easi-Span ultra-large buildings and Easi-Set restrooms, feature a patented post-tensioning system in the roof and floor, a turn-down roof that caps the walls, and a step-down floor panel to eliminate the possibility of water migration into the building along the bottom of the wall panels. Easi-Set Buildings are virtually maintenance free, are available in a variety of sizes and finishes, and are fully customizable. They are typically assembled at the plant, delivered to the customer's site and installed on a gravel pad or concrete slab in a matter of hours.

    Angie's List: Tree removal

    - July 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

(ANGIE'S LIST) - Trees can add beauty and value to our homes -- even reduce heating and cooling costs if they're properly placed. But what happens if

you have a tree in your yard that is in danger of toppling? There are a things you can do to help remove those trees fast and easy.

Homeowner Troy Carpenter says, "Over the course of the last two years we had about 17 trees taken out. All ash trees."

A few years ago, he noticed the Emerald Ash Borer beetle was killing his trees.

"You start noticing when the canopy thins out and eventually they don?t have any leaves so we thought we could treat about half of them that seemed to have somewhat healthy canopies," says Carpenter.

When the treatments didn't work -- Carpenter had no other choice but have the trees removed.

"Proper tree maintenance is important from a liability standpoint for homeowners. You may not realize, but if you have a tree that falls and damages someone else's property you are going to be responsible so you want to take care of them when you see the first need," says Angie Hicks from Angie's List.

Rick Carter from Tree Service Company says, "There's anything from defoliation to partial or complete defoliation of the tree to discoloration of the foliage to disfiguration of the leaves; sometimes leaves are curled ? that could be signs of a certain diseases or potential other injuries."

When it's time to remove a tree, several factors can affect the costs.

"A lot of tree removal companies will charge by the foot of a tree. For example, if $15 a foot, a 40-foot tree would cost $600 to remove. Keep in mind that price doesn't always include taking the stump out so be sure to ask about that in particular if that's important to you," says Hicks.

Frustration grows with county government officials over fallen tree

    - July 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

When a large tree crashed into Kathryn Reich's backyard in late April during a storm, the Longview Drive resident never expected it would take more than three months to get it removed.

Last week, six of Reich's neighbors gathered to rally around her to have the large tree, still draped across a large portion of her yard, removed by Baltimore County.

They would also like to see the stream in which the tree had been growing maintained by the county.

"Nobody is maintaining the stream and it's becoming a real problem," said Reich, who has lived on the street off Ingleside Avenue near Baltimore National Pike since 1985.

The county used to maintain the stream, which flows to a stormwater pond behind the homes, Reich said.

"When they developed Maple Woods, because they knew that was going to cause additional flooding problems which is why the pond got built we were told, 'We're going to maintain the pond because that was built to control the flow of water...We're going to take care of this for you so we can get these townhouses up,'" Reich said.

"Isn't that what they told us?" Reich said, looking to her neighbors.

Jerry Kloby, 79, who lives five houses down, nodded his head in agreement, "Yes, yes."

The 20-foot wide easement is in front of a wooded parcel of land that separates the homes on Longview, part of the Longview Place subdivision built in 1953, from Maple Woods, a development built in 1991.

But who owns the wooded property remains in question.
