Business feature: Pest control business booming

Local pest control services are dealing with an assortment of insects and small animals invading local homes, businesses, and agricultural areas as a result of recent rains.

Lee Ann Davis, district supervisor for Southwestern Pest Control, said the pests this summer are those found in moist, humid conditions.

Field beetles and oriental cockroaches have been coming into peoples homes this year, said Davis.

Davis said during the previous year, the pest control service had received more calls for insects like the sun spider, which is better suited for harsh, dry conditions.

The rain has been driving bugs into homes and businesses, said Davis.

Davis said having more bugs looking for refuge inside of buildings has caused an increase in calls for spiders.

Davis said, The spiders are after the bugs.

Four-legged pests have become more common as well, with mice being driven inside as their natural habitats become flooded.

Increase in Bed Bugs Is a Cause for Concern for Phoenix Area Residents

    - July 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) July 22, 2014

10 years ago residents of the Phoenix metro area hadn't even heard the term "bed bugs" outside of child hood rhymes. According to AZCentral and NBC they are a common problem and there are more incidents with each passing year. Bed bugs are much more than just an annoyance. They are very difficult to get rid of and can cause severe health problems. Phoenix residents should act immediately if they suspect that they might have bed bugs in their home.

One Phoenix mother Jessica K. recently learned her 4-year-old son had autism when she discovered his rocking chair was infested with bed bugs. The problem had remained a mystery for months until she decided it was essential to clean the chair. For months, she had also mistaken her bed bug bites for mosquito bites, an important clue for consumers suspecting the presence of bed bugs in their home.

The concerned Arizona mother consulted many websites and identified the bed bug by its features. She even tried a natural product - diatomaceous earth - to rid the chair of the pests, but with no success. This remedy provided a measure of control, but did not solve her problem. Neither did carpet tape.

Struggling with her own disability and her son's autism, Jessica could not believe the prices she was quoted by local companies for treating Phoenix bed bugs. It was difficult to combat feelings of desperation over the cost of pest control.

She recalls, "Up until that point I had contacted numerous companies and was about to move forward with Green Home Pest Control because their prices were fair. They had great reviews online and are known for bed bugs Phoenix control. They also were willing to work with me on paying and were going to let me pay for it in a few different payments, which was nice."

The young mom was frustrated with the itchy bites of Phoenix bed bugs, often losing sleep over the whole situation. Then, she learned she needed a risky surgery and became more concerned than ever about her family's finances. Green Home Pest Control's owner, Jon, came to her rescue, personally calling her and offering to resolve the bed bug problem at no charge.

Jessica and her family received a quality Phoenix pest control service from a family-owned company that cares about local residents and their families. She assured the owner, "With my son just being diagnosed with autism, it changes your life. Bed Bugs are the worst possible thing that could happen after. I have never had anyone help me like this. It's very much appreciated!"

Green Home Pest Control, a leader of pest control Phoenix services, solved one struggling family's bed bug infestation in Phoenix using an eco-friendly method and changed their lives for the better. Green Home Pest Control always strives to use agents that are botanical or organically derived, ensuring the safety of all ages in every home they visit.

    Great White North's summer surprise

A reporter leans over the edge of the catwalk during the media preview for the "EdgeWalk" on the CN Tower.

People play a game of pickup soccer in downtown Toronto.

A man paraglides in front of the skyline in Toronto.

The sun rises over the CN tower and the skyline in Toronto.

Perhaps most famous for having a mayor who has admitted smoking crack cocaine, Toronto has much more than salacious headlines to offer the intrepid visitor, especially when snow is far from the collective consciousness.

With a winter that can send recent immigrants into shock, Toronto is best visited between May and September, when it is awash with festivals and events, and patios are jammed with locals enjoying a long-awaited outdoor pint.

The city is a hotbed for immigration as is made clear by the array of construction cranes working on new downtown condos designed to appeal to the 100,000 or so newcomers that arrive in Toronto each year.

But stepping past the main streets brings you to the true fruits of decades of international settlement: a network of immigrant enclaves that make the city a virtual United Nations of food, music, and street culture.

So don't get bogged down by the construction that paralyses movement around the iconic Union Station and squeezes traffic on the city's byways. Complain like a local, then get on with it.

If you're choosing bi-fold doors, you need to choose big.

U nlike French windows and sliding patio doors, bi-fold doors consist of three or more doors that fold back on themselves and sit flat against one or both walls, depending if they open in the middle or at the side.

There's no way around it, they look at their most spectacular spanning a whole wall, or even walls, and w hen the weather's nice, you can fold them back to open up the most stunning entertaining space.

The cost of the doors will vary, depending on the size of the opening, whether the doors are a standard size or made to measure, and what they're made of (typically wood, UPVC or aluminium). Companies that make bespoke bi-fold doors often install them and provide a guarantee, giving you convenience and peace of mind.

Bi-fold doors are most effective when the floor and ground level on either side of them is the same. This may involve some work in the garden, but it will improve the indoor-outdoor flow and increase the 'wow' factor, especially if you use the same, or similar, flooring inside and out, perhaps slate tiles. Inside, the new doors may mean you have to replaster, redecorate and move things, such as radiators, sockets and switches, but p lanning permission isn't usually required.

That said, there are exceptions. For example, planning may be needed for homes on 'designated land', like conservation areas - check with your local council if in doubt. If your home's listed, you'll need listed building consent from the council to fit bi-fold doors, and if you live in a leasehold flat or house, you may need the freeholder's permission.

If you fit the doors yourself, or get a builder to do it, it's vital to get the work checked and signed off by a building control inspector, either from your local council or a private firm, to ensure it complies with building regulations. The easiest option is to use a window and door company that can self-certify their work complies, such as companies belonging to FENSA (www.fensa.co.uk).

Either way, you'll need a building regs certificate for the doors, otherwise you may have a problem when you try and sell your home.

Unless you have an existing window/door that's the same as, or bigger than, the size of the opening required for the bi-fold doors, a new lintel will have to be fitted above the opening for support. Your first step (at the planning stage) should be to consult a structural engineer, or use a reputable window and door company to supply and fit the doors. It should carry out a survey and then do whatever's necessary to make your home structurally sound.

Burglars target homes with windows left open in hot weather in Shirley area of Southampton

2:48pm Tuesday 22nd July 2014 in News By Melanie Adams, Crime Reporter

HOMEOWNERS are being warned to keep their homes secure in the hot weather after a spate of burglaries in Southampton.

Four homes in Shirley have been targeted in the last four days as thieves make the most of unlocked doors and open windows.

The latest incident came in the early hours of yesterday morning when thieves got into a flat in Mansel Road West through an unsecure window, taking electrical items as well as a silver Toyota Enigma after finding the car keys in a handbag they stole.

On Friday a handbag was stolen from a home in Lancaster Road after patio doors were left open, while thieves also got into a home in Rosewall Road via an open back door.

In the early hours of Saturday morning a hooded thief entered a home in Palm Road before running off with a purse. Police believe he may have got in by putting his hand through the letterbox on the front door and releasing the handle.

Anyone with information about these should contact Police Staff Investigator Kelly Godden at Shirley police station on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A quick witted Crewe landlord made a citizen's arrest of a burglar who stole over 3000 worth of goods

THE landlord of the Coach and Horses, in Crewe, helped to catch a 22-year-old burglar, just hours after he committed the crime.

At 2.55pm last Tuesday officers from Cheshire Police were called to reports of a burglary at an address in Middlewich Road, Bradfield Green, Crewe.

On arrival at the scene officers found that the offender had forced entry into the address through the patio doors and had stolen over 3000 worth of property.

Later on the same day, at approximately 9.45pm, officers received a 999 call from the landlord of the nearby pub, the Coach and Horses, reporting that he and his friend had detained a man after they spotted him shining a torch into a bush near to the house that had been burgled, before pulling out a holdall full of property.

Officers attended the scene and on arrival arrested a man on suspicion of burglary.

Following a full search of the mans address, and forensic checks, 22-year-old Aivaras Stonys, from Underwod Lane, Crewe, was charged with burglary.

Stonys appeared at Crewe Magistrates Court at on July 17, where he was remanded in custody.

Inspector Christian Watkins, from Crewe Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: Information from the public is vital in our fight against crime. We do not proactively advise people to conduct citizens arrests, but in this case the help of two local residents has helped to reunite a family with their property.

"I would advise anyone who sees anything suspicious in their local communities to contact Cheshire Police on 101, or alternatively in an emergency call 999."
