SALT LAKE CITY The LDS Church has announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for the Meridian Idaho Temple will be held on Aug. 23 at 10 a.m.

The groundbreaking is the first announced since the faith's April general conference, when no new temples were announced but church President Thomas S. Monson said the temple department would concentrate on completing previously announced temples.

President Monson announced plans for the Meridian Temple during the April 2011 general conference.

It will be the 15th temple under construction, leaving an additional 12 that have been announced but for which ground has not yet been broken.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has 143 operating temples. That list includes the Ogden Utah Temple, which actually has been under renovation for several years. The renovation is nearing completion, and free tickets for a five-week open house became available online Monday morning.

The Meridian Temple will be the fifth LDS temple in Idaho. One is 12 miles away in Boise. The others are in Twin Falls, Idaho Falls and Rexburg.

The Meridian temple site is located at 7345 North Linder Road. The website ldschurchtemples.com says Meridian is the fastest-growing city in Idaho with a 115 percent increase in population from 2000 to 2010.

MIRI: The state government has presented a RM100,000 grant for the construction of the Holy Trinity Church in Lambir.

Lambir assemblyman Ripin Lamat presented the grant on behalf of Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem to building committee chairman Pemanca Wilson Siang Lim recently.

We would like to thank the state government through the chief minister for the allocation. Such a contribution is needed for us to finance the new church construction at an estimated cost of RM1.5 million, said Wilson.

In addition, he said the building committee has also received minor rural project (MRP) grants from Assistant Minister in the Chief Ministers Office (Islamic Affairs) Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman, Sibuti member of parliament Ahmad Lai Bujang and Ripin.

We are indeed touched with the support shown by the Muslim YBs which clearly showed that religious tolerance has been well practised by the multiracial people in the state, he said.

Wilson added that the church building fund is still short of RM800,000.

We are going to organise a second fundraising dinner for the church on Nov 28 at Mega Hotel. Here, I would like to thank the generous supporters, he said.

Meanwhile, six mosques and six schools here also received MRP grants totalling RM158,000 from Ripin. They were An Naim Lutong Mosque, Darul Ehsan Mosque in Piasau, At-Taqwa Mosque, Darul Istiqamah Mosque in Kampung Luak, Ar Rayyan Mosque in Permyjaya, Jamek Mosque in Miri, SJK Tukau, Sekolah Agama Rakyat Miri, SM Sains, SK Lambir Village, SK Kelapa Sawit No. 2 and SK Ulu Satap. Ripin also presented MRP grants from the state government to clubs, associations and churches.

Little Botetourt County church celebrates a big anniversary

    - July 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    BOTETOURT CO., Va. -

Looking through black and white photos, you can tell how much Wheatland Evangelical Lutheran Church in Botetourt County has changed - if by only looking at the tree in the corner.

But, after 150 years, and a couple of construction projects, the church is still doing the job it set out to...

Explains church member Katie Loope, "We care about each other, so it's an uplifting place/experience. Music, the liturgy, it's what we need at the end of the week or the beginning of a new week. And, it's something I miss personally when I'm not here on Sundays."

Church council member Katie Loope married into the church in the 70s.

Her husband's family has ties that date back to the beginning.

"This is a rendition of our founding minister Reverend Shickel," says Loope pointing to a picture on the wall.

In 1864, the church was originally called Luther Chapel and was located on Little Timber Ridge in Buchanan.

By the late 1880s, it had moved to a new site, with a new name, on Wheatland Road.

The white church gave way to a brick structure in the 1930s.

City Council Approves Church Proposal For More Money

    - July 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Springdale, AR -The City Council unanimously passing a proposal involving a church displaced by construction of the Don Tyson Interchange. Victory Church sat on the same corner for some 20 years on the north side of The Don Tyson Parkway. With the interchange, the congregation knew it would have to relocate, but the land the church had set aside for a future home was also needed by the city. Under imminent domain, Springdale took the church's original piece of property for around $2 million, but Pastor Tim Coffman says that money wasn't enough to cover all the cost associated with relocating.

"We've got 13 and a half acres there, that they are going to take about 3/4 of an acre there for the roundabout. We've come to an agreement that's mutual for both of us," Coffman explained.

Tuesday night the council officially accepted Coffman's proposal meaning the church gets about $150,000 for the additional land on the corner of 56th and Don Tyson Parkway.Coffman says the funds will go towards relocating and finding a permanent home for the church.

Modular apartments stack up in Manhattan

    - July 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW YORK In a city piled high with ambitious architecture, a seven-floor structure off the beaten path boasts a distinction of its own: Its billed as the first multistory, modular-built apartment building to open in the nations apartment capital.

Called the Stack, the building near Manhattans northern tip aims to show that while stackable apartments can save builders time and money, modular doesnt have to mean monotonous. Its chunky front embraces its building-block roots, but the apartments interiors defy their boxy components with varied floor plans and stylish fixtures and finishes.

Modular construction assembling a building from prefabricated sections instead of building from scratch on-site has been around for decades, but interest has grown recently around the country and in its biggest city. The worlds tallest modular building, a 32-story apartment tower, is rising in Brooklyn.

Advocates say modular building can trim costs and timetables module factories dont have to worry about bad weather and make construction more consistent. Still, the technique presents special challenges (say, driving a 750-square-foot box over the George Washington Bridge), and not all projects have proven speedy. Some have faced pushback from labor interests, not to mention an image problem: The method is sometimes perceived as cheap and, well, cookie-cutter.

Prefab and modular have somewhat of a stigma associated with it, in some peoples minds, whether its appropriate or not, developer Jeffrey M. Brown said. But this approach can really produce cool buildings.

Jeffrey M. Brown walks July 9 through a two-bedroom apartment in the seven-story modular apartment building, called the Stack, that he co-developed in the Innwood neighborhood of New York. (AP photo: Bebeto Matthews)

Some key facts about modular buildings (in stackable form):

    The lay of the land

Modular apartment buildings date at least to Montreals Habitat 67 complex, built for the 1967 Worlds Fair and still a desirable address. Section-stacking construction is still a relatively rarity in the U.S.: about 1 percent of the overall market outside single-family homes, according to the Modular Building Institute, a trade association. But interest has grown in the last 20 years, as some developers embraced the efficiency of piecing together components that come complete with floors, electrical systems, appliances even towel bars to create apartments, hotels, hospitals and more. New York Citys Department of Buildings says 39 modular projects have at least submitted paperwork.

Poll shows few Americans check doctors vitals before letting them check theirs

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Americans consider insurance and a good bedside manner in choosing a doctor, but will that doctor provide high-quality care? A new poll shows that people dont know how to determine that.

Being licensed and likable doesnt necessarily mean a doctor is up to date on best practices. But consumers arent sure how to uncover much more. Just 22 percent of those questioned are confident they can find information to compare the quality of local doctors, according to the poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Today, 6 in 10 people say they trust doctor recommendations from friends or family, and nearly half value referrals from their regular physician. The poll found far fewer trust quality information from online patient reviews, health insurers, ratings web sites, the media, even the government.
