NYC apartment house seeks to show how modular design stacks up in the quest for cool
NEW YORK (AP) -- In a city piled high with ambitious architecture, a seven-floor structure off the beaten path boasts a distinction of its own: Its billed as the first multistory, modular-built apartment building to open in the nations apartment capital.
Called the Stack, the building near Manhattans northern tip aims to show that while stackable apartments can save builders time and money, modular doesnt have to mean monotonous. Its chunky front embraces its building-block roots, but the apartments interiors defy their boxy components with varied floor plans and stylish fixtures and finishes.
Modular construction -- assembling a building from prefabricated sections instead of building from scratch on-site -- has been around for decades, but interest has grown recently around the country and in its biggest city. The worlds tallest modular building, a 32-story apartment tower, is rising in Brooklyn.
Advocates say modular building can trim costs and timetables -- module factories dont have to worry about bad weather -- and make construction more consistent. Still, the technique presents special challenges (say, driving a 750-square-foot box over the George Washington Bridge), and not all projects have proven speedy. Some have faced pushback from labor interests, not to mention an image problem: The method is sometimes perceived as cheap and, well, cookie-cutter.
"Pre-fab and modular have somewhat of a stigma associated with it, in some peoples minds, whether its appropriate or not," developer Jeffrey M. Brown said. But "this approach can really produce cool buildings."
Poll shows few Americans check doctors vitals before letting them check theirs
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Americans consider insurance and a good bedside manner in choosing a doctor, but will that doctor provide high-quality care? A new poll shows that people dont know how to determine that.
Being licensed and likable doesnt necessarily mean a doctor is up to date on best practices. But consumers arent sure how to uncover much more. Just 22 percent of those questioned are confident they can find information to compare the quality of local doctors, according to the poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
Today, 6 in 10 people say they trust doctor recommendations from friends or family, and nearly half value referrals from their regular physician. The poll found far fewer trust quality information from online patient reviews, health insurers, ratings web sites, the media, even the government.

Chattanooga-based chef and restaurateur Daniel Lindley said today he plans to open his first restaurant in Nashville.
The new 5th at Taylor Place is scheduled to open this fall in historic Germantown and will serve dinner daily, featuring a regional and seasonally focused American menu. Inspired by Lindleys culinary background and creative endeavors, 5th & Taylor will have an eclectic atmosphere in a 96-year-old barrel roof warehouse, formerly part of an old textile bag plant and cotton mill.
Ive spent a good amount of time in Nashville over the years and consider it an extension of home Lindley said in a statement today. Im excited to bring this unique restaurant to Nashvilles expanding market. Its my hope that 5th & Taylor will complement the amazing restaurants in Germantown and maintain the relaxed vibe of the neighborhood.
Lindley, a former executive chef and owner of the St John's restaurant in Chattanooga, has been sketching the renderings for the interior and exterior of the Nashville restaurant for the past year. Partnering with interior designer, Ruth De Jong, an L.A. based production designer, painter and interior decorator for notable restaurants like Son of a Gun, the space will incorporate many artistic elements .Architect Smith Gee and SWH Residential Partners will execute plans for the 6,200 square foot interior that will include a main dining room, two private dining areas and an outdoor patio and bar, adding an additional 2,500 square feet to the warehouse space. The private dining accommodations will be equipped with state of the art audio visual equipment for business meetings, presentations and social gatherings. Overall, indoor and outdoor seating will accommodate 250 guests.
5th & Taylor will be open daily Monday through Sunday. More information about 5th & Taylor will soon be available at 5thandtaylor.com and djenthospitality.com.

Waterford - With the school capital improvement project almost complete, the town is now eyeing $9 million in long-delayed improvements to the municipal complex on Hartford Road.
The Municipal Complex Improvements Building Committee voted unanimously Monday to begin pursuing funding for the project. The committee plans to go to the Board of Finance in September and Representative Town Meeting in October to request authorization to seek loans and bond the work.
Chief Engineer Neftali Soto and First Selectman Daniel Steward say the complex is out-of-date and needs to be brought up to state building codes. The more than 50-year-old complex houses the Utility Commission, transfer station and a garage for town vehicles and other supplies.
"The only thing that will stay will be the outside shell," Soto said Monday following a meeting of the Municipal Complex Improvements Building Committee.
Steward explained that town officials have discussed making improvements to the complex for roughly 10 years, but that school construction projects took precedence. The only part left for the school projects is maintenance on the buildings and a few small additions and changes at the new high school.
Planned improvements to the municipal complex include cleaning up an oil plume underneath the building, which Steward said is of unknown origin, and changes to the electrical system such as increasing the number of outlets.
Steward said that the garage requires the most work. Standing near a cluster of Public Works trucks in the garage Monday, he pointed out a crack in the garage's cinder block wall. He said the garage also needed more ventilation to accommodate exhaust from Public Works trucks, taller exits for public works and garbage trucks, repairs of cracked walls and better insulation, and possible asbestos remediation.
He said the garage has no drainage system, posing problems when snow-covered trucks enter in the winter.
Finance Director Rudie Beers told the committee during the meeting that it would need to tap into the $300,000 in capital improvement funds designated for the project to hire engineers to revise the $9 million cost estimate from 2012.
"We don't want an 'oops,'" she said.
