ThinkGeek's Star Trek Phaser looks like the universe's greatest universal remote.
With the rise of smart TVs and clever gadgets, do you still need that one remote to rule them all?
A few years ago I would have said that a decent universal remote control was an essential addition to any tech-savvy lounge room, to help you escape the mountain of remotes piled up on your coffee table. Even if you know exactly how your lounge room is wired up, your loved ones shouldn't need a degree in electrical engineering just so they can turn on the television at the end of the day.
A universal remote can certainly help ease tensions, plus something like the Star Trek phaser universal remote from Think Geekwould make a classy addition to any lounge room it even makes the sound effects.
I've long been a fan of Logitech's Harmony universal remote controls, because they're highly flexible. Logitech maintains a database of thousands of AV devices, and if you get stuck the Logitech remote can actually learn the commands from your existing remotes. You can program complicated macros to configure every device in your lounge room with a single button press.
My old trusty old Logitech Harmony 785 universal remote finally gave up the ghost this week, having been knocked off the coffee table and dropped on the floor more times than I care to remember over the last seven years. It got to the point where even my kids weren't overly apologetic when the remote control hit the deck.
After all the rough and tumble it was actually a worn-out button which finally brought about my Harmony's demise. To tell the truth, I pulled it apart in an effort to mend the button and managed to "fix" it beyond repair but it was already living on borrowed time and the charge cradle was flaky. It's time had come. Unfortunately newer model Harmony remotes tend to offer fewer features than the old ones so, rather than buy a new one, I've dug up an old Harmony 525 to take the 785's place.
I wouldn't dream of living without a universal remote, because my television only has two HDMI inputs. One is hooked up to an HDMI amplifier with four HDMI sockets, and the other TV input is connected to a four-way HDMI switch.
To watch most of the devices in my lounge room you need to turn on the television and set it to the right input, then turn on the amp or switch and change it to the correct input. Next you need to find the remote for the device you actually want to watch, such as the TiVo, Blu-ray player, media centre or Apple TV. The thought of doing all this manually every time I flop down on the couch doesn't thrill me.
While a universal remote is mandatory for my lounge room, they're becoming less important in lounge rooms with all-in-one devices like smart TVs and Blu-ray players with internet access. When your devices handle more tasks, you switch between them far less often. At this point you might find the basic universal features built into the supplied remote controls are up to the job. More so if you're abandoning optical disc players and Personal Video Recorders in favour of internet video.

Move over Jeremy Meeks. Angela Green is looking to dethrone you as sovereign of the viral mug shot.
Green made her spirited addition to this years mug shot hall of fame following her arrest Saturday for refusing to leave a Wickliffe, Ohio, hotel.
WOIO, Cleveland, reported authorities were summoned to a Quality Inn after Green refused to check out of her hotel room. She had rented the room Friday night and was supposed to leave the room by 11 a.m. Saturday.
Police say officers arrived and told Green she needed to rent the room for an additional day or leave the premises. Green then became upset with officers and refused to cooperate, officials say. They added officers discovered Green had given them a fake identity.
Though she put up a bit of a struggle, Green was placed under arrest and taken to the police station where authorities snapped Greens much-talked-about picture.
Green was charged with obstructing official business. She was later released on $354 cash bond.
The image was posted to theWickliffe Police Department's Facebook pageSaturday and has since been shared by several Facebook users. The photo hasn't received as much buzz as that of the nation's favorite handsome felon Jeremy Meeks, but with her aggressively unbothered pose, Green has definitely left her mark on this year's list of most-memorable mug shots.

Mike Hintons new business venture represents a big change from what he is used to doing.
For the last two decades, Hinton has worked in the home building and remodeling industry as president of Hinton Construction. In December, he opened his first restaurant, 101 Gastropub, in Cedar Rapids.
So what led Hinton to his latest business pursuit?
One of the bigger reasons was to have something else to work on during the cold winters, he said. Its something Ive been wanting to do, a new challenge.
Hinton, who had been exploring the idea of opening a restaurant for about five years, decided to act when the First Avenue SE building that formerly housed Deanoz Sports Bar and Grill came on the market.
Everything fell into place, Hinton said. It was the right size, there is plenty of parking and the big key there is a lot of traffic by here every day.
Hintons initial focus was a familiar task remodeling. In about 12 weeks, he stripped the interior, added a new bar and woodwork, and doubled the size of the kitchen.
Hinton said he wanted his establishment to have more of a focus on food, which is why he decided on the gastropub concept. A gastropub is a cross between a pub and restaurant that serves craft beer and higher-end food and liquor.
Along with burgers and other standard pub fare, 101 Gastropubs menu features items like smoked duck and bacon truffle macaroni, while a members-only barrel club provides access to exclusive scotch and whiskey offerings.

Say this for the Boston Redevelopment Authority: It knows what it wants, and it wont stop until it gets it.
What it wants is a privately-owned restaurant at the tip of Long Wharf, and for six years it has fought neighbors, preservationists, and the National Park Service to get it. The BRA has awarded a lease for Docs Long Wharf restaurant, which would seat 220 patrons and replace the little-used structure that sits next to the plaza on the wharfs tip. But opponents of the plan believe the entire end of the wharf is protected from development.
The authority sued the National Park Service on Monday, alleging the federal agency is protecting too much land at the end of the wharf, according to the Boston Business Journal.
At issue is a 1980 map showing what parts of Long Wharf are protected under the Land and Water Conservation Act. That map, discovered last year, covers more of the wharfs tip than the previous map, which was made in 1986. That change led Suffolk Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Fahey to reverse a previous decision granting construction of the restaurant.
From The Boston Globes account of the new map:
The strange manner in which the [newly discovered map] came to light requires this court to allow the map into evidence in the interests of justice, Suffolk Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Fahey wrote in voiding the restaurants state environmental permit and calling for the BRA to reapply, this time using the correct map.
But the BRA isnt so sure that newly discovered 1980 map is official or even accurate, noting it is not drawn to scale and includes features that no longer existed in 1980. According to the suit, the Park Service engaged in arbitrary and capricious decision-making and ignored its own rules when it decided to use the older map.
From the BRAs court filing:
The 1980 Sketch is not a BRA document. Moreover, an extensive and comprehensive
Search of BRA archives revealed no evidence that the 1980 Sketch was ever in the BRAs

An 18-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after someone opened fire on a plumbers work truck in Kent, police said.
Kent police say that a plumber arrived at a home on the13000 block of Southeast 247th Place around 2 p.m. for an appointment. He heard people arguing inside the home and decided to drive away and not complete the service call, according to police.
As the plumber drove away, a gunshot struck his truck, police said. The plumber, who was not wounded, did not see who had shot at him. Police said hedrove away and called 911.
Police responded and heardgunshots coming from inside the home. Officers determined an 18-year-old manlived inside the home and used PA announcements to call out to him. The mancame outside and was arrested, police said.
Detectives recovered evidence at the scene, although police did not elaborate.
