"Retaining the Spirit of Guam, U.S.A." has been an ongoing project for many years but was finally completed yesterday.

"It has been a long journey with a lot of work," said James Terbio, project manager with the Island Beautification Task Force.

A long-time vision of Lt. Gov. Ray Tenorio came to pass yesterday with the ribbon cutting of the East Hagta wall. The wall, first painted in 2003, features a combination of the American and Guam flags flying together in unison with a yellow ribbon in the center. Because the wall had to be repainted several times throughout the years, Tenorio wanted to create something longer lasting.

Rather than continuing to repaint the wall throughout the years, Tenorio and the Island Beautification Task Force decided to use mosaic tiles.

The wall features 385,920 one-inch tiles, and it took approximately 2,100 working hours to complete.

Gov. Eddie Calvo said the wall represents what Guam's people have experienced throughout the years.

"It symbolizes a great people of Guam and all the things they've gone through but also the intimate relationship with the United States, the greatest democracy in the world," Calvo said.

The center of the wall, as Tenorio described it, is a representation of the military men and women who "kept tyranny off this island."

"This is our home, and we take pride in it," Tenorio said.

Several military men and women joined the governor and lieutenant governor in the ribbon-cutting process. Tenorio said he believed it was important to have the service members in attendance yesterday.

CALDWELL, Texas - With the clock ticking on the start of another school year, Caldwell ISD officials say there may not be enough time to clean up the mold found inside the elementary school before the first bell rings.

Caldwell board members planned to announce the company they're contracting with to get the mold cleaned out of the school at Tuesday night's meeting, but cleanup has yet to begin.

Caldwell ISD Superintendent Dr. Timothy Cuff said the holdup isn't because they've been idle during the Summer months. He said between the district and the lawyers, the road to cleanup is a long one.

"It's just amazing at how much paperwork there has to be," said Cuff. "And believe me, I've been frustrated too with the whole system. But everybody has to make sure that everything is in place, because, when the job is done, we want it done right."

Mold was discovered in some of the school classrooms in March. It was determined to be non toxic, but some of the students had complained of headaches and unexplained rashes. The school was shut down before the school year ended, and students were moved to area churches.

The school is on a suspended foundation. Cuff said over time, water collected underneath the foundation and some of it seeped through tiny cracks in the floor, causing the mold issue.

"Now, what we'll be doing is extracting the water out through dehumidifiers, and keeping it pretty dry under there," said Cuff.

Cuff hoped the process of cleanup and renovation would be completed by the start of this school year, but now he has his doubts.

"Can I one hundred percent guarantee it? I can't. I wish I could," said Cuff.

Cuff said the remediation, or cleaning process, is phase one. Phase two will cover any renovations that need to be made. The school board will announce a contract with a different company for phase two at next Tuesday's meeting.

Mold Still an Issue at Caldwell Elementary

A small Eccles church is making a big impact on the community and has plans to begin construction on a food pantry/fellowship hall for the community in the fall or the spring, the pastor reported.

Eccles is a small mining community of around 400 residents, located along W.Va. 3 in Raleigh County.

Life Point Apostolic Church Pastor Steve Stover said the 25 full-time members of the independent Life Point Apostolic Church want to offer Eccles and Whitesville residents, along with those of other communities, a place that shows Gods love.

It would benefit anyone, said Stover. We wouldnt put any limitations on it.

The church shares the Eccles Community Church building with Eccles Community Church, according to Stover, and hundreds of visitors have walked through the doors for Life Point church services on Sunday and Wednesday evenings.

The food pantry is planned for the parking lot of the church.

Were wanting to build a food pantry/fellowship hall to where its hooked up to a generator, said Stover. So if the power goes off, the generator would automatically kick on.

He noted that there are many senior citizens in the Eccles area.

If something happened (like the 2012 derecho) it would be a good place for the people to go, thats air-conditioned and has free food for the community.

Reaching Eccles residents and others is a main focus of the church, and Stover emphasized that Life Point church members not just their pastor are behind the food pantry and have a passion for showing Gods love to their communities.
