New rules in Campton Hills aim to preserve dark skies

    - July 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CAMPTON HILLS New rules are in place to help preserve Campton Hills' dark skies.

The Village Board in May approved the responsible outdoor lighting ordinance for new construction. It was written with the goal of preserving and enhancing the ability to view the night sky and to promote sound environmental policies consistent with the spirit of the comprehensive plan, according to a village news release.

The release states that the ordinance applies to new construction of all commercial fixtures and residential street, pedestrian, sign, flood and parking lot light fixtures.

It does not apply to fixtures on homes, according to the village.

"New construction" is defined as construction of entirely new structures, including new poles; enlargement of any existing structure by at least 50 percent; and, the release states, the addition of new lighting fixtures.

It does not apply to the replacement of light fixtures that existed before July 1, 2014, according to the release. The release indicates that light fixtures affected by the ordinance must meet several criteria designed to reduce uplighting, bright white lighting and glare.

The dark skies ordinance stemmed from a 2009 referendum question. Village Trustee Sue George, Christine Brauer of the Plan Commission, and Illinois Coalition for Responsible Outdoor Lighting cofounders Drew Carhart and Debra Luginbuhl were among those who helped staff and engineering consultants with the ordinance.

An Oak Lawn woman charged with murdering her 5-month-old granddaughter with a sledgehammer and knife is not mentally fit to stand trial at this time, a Cook County Circuit Court judge ruled Monday.

Judge Clayton Crane agreed with the findings of psychiatrist Dr. Matthew Markos, of Cook County Forensic Clinical Services, who in May determined that Alfreda Giedrojc is unfit to stand trial.

After a series of delays the past few months, her fitness hearing finally was held before Crane at the Cook County Criminal Courts Building at 26th Street and California Avenue in Chicago.

It took all of five minutes for Crane to issue his ruling.

He told Giedrojc that she must return to court Aug. 28, at which time her treatment schedule will be unveiled. The judge also said Giedrojc, 62, must be re-evaluated after one year to determine whether she is fit to stand trial after treatment.

The Polish immigrant, who needs an interpreter during court appearances, was dressed in jail-issued blue coveralls over a white shirt. She used her left hand to pat down her graying hair as she entered the courtroom. No family members attended the hearing.

Saunders Landscape Supply Talks Benefits of Lawn Maintenance This Summer

    - July 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Chantilly, VA (PRWEB) July 14, 2014

Saunders Landscape Supply, located in Chantilly, Virginia, wants to remind homeowners this season about the benefits of lawn renovations and landscaping before the fall season starts.

In the past 12 months, roughly 164 million people have gardened or performed some sort of yard work on their homes, and Saunders wants to make sure that everyone gets their property prepared for the fall and winter months so that they can enjoy their outdoor view next spring.

Various materials, along with a mix of different wood, are used to make mulch. Mulch is used to retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, suppress weed growth, and for aesthetic appearances. Saunders Landscape Supply recommends mulching when the soil temperatures have risen enough that the ground has settled, which is usually in late summer or early fall.

The company offers organic topsoil, which is a mix of compost and topsoil. The topsoil provides ample space for grass to grow, while the compost provides it with nutrients. Saunders recommends at least a one inch thickness of mulch for planting grass. One cubic yard of topsoil, also supplied by the company, can cover about 300 square feet at a one inch thickness. Because the soil is easily spreadable, homeowners have the option to easily and affordably plant grass.

"The best time to renovate your lawn is during the early fall because any grass seed that is planted will have 10 months to germinate before the hot months of July and August," said Donald Saunders Jr., President of Saunders Landscape Supply.

By laying new grass seed in the late summer or early fall, customers will benefit from the new grass having time to germinate and grow to its full potential the following spring.

"Some homeowners will conduct a core aeration, and this helps relieve the compaction in the soil. This is typically completed by a machine that penetrates the soil by two inches," explained Saunders. "By relieving the compaction in the soil, the roots of grass can more easily expand and grow, and this makes way for a healthier, thicker lawn."

Saunders Landscape Supply has served residents of Virginia and Maryland since it was founded in 1994, and provides the materials that homeowners need for any lawn renovation or maintenance plan. The business is located at 14016 Sullyfield Circle in Chantilly, VA. For more information, call 703-764-4831, email marketing (at) saundersls (dot) com or visit saundersls.com.

Call Kurtis Investigates: Home Warranty Company Operates Illegally in California

FOLSOM (CBS13) A home warranty company has been illegally operating in California, a Call Kurtis Investigation has uncovered. Customers up and down the state have complained after being sold policies for years of protection saying Colonial Home Warranty was not there for them when they needed the protection.

Neville Patel of Folsom says his microwave stopped heating. Instead of replacing the broken magnatron part, he says Colonial Home Warranty offered him a $45 buyout saying the part wasnt available. CBS13 confirmed with G.E., it had nearly 5-hundred of the same magnatron parts in stock at $246 apiece.

They dont want to fix it, he said.

Ernie Hills of Sacramento says when his stove quit working, Colonial Home Warranty offered him a $35 buyout, saying the expensive part wasnt available.

It wasnt available from the source they had, and they werent willing to look for it, he recalls. Ernie says he found the part and told them where they could get it.

    Theyre despicable, he said.

CBS13 has learned Colonial Home Warranty headquartered in Delaware never shouldve sold policies in California, where they are not licensed.

They were operating illegally, said Department of Insurance spokesperson Nancy Kincaid.
