Every day feels like Christmas at Mi Tierra, San Antonio's best-loved bakery and restaurant. Neon-coloured fairy lights, draped over every wall, are migrating to the ceiling, while glittering star-shaped piatas hang in flocks overhead. Adding to the festive feeling is the colourful array of cakes and biscuits on display, laden with nuts or flavoured creams or super-sweet dulce de leche.
Mi Tierra is a local landmark, one of the favourite gathering places for San Antonio's large Mexican community. This southern part of Texas used to belong to Mexico, and the majority of the population is still Hispanic. You can feel the influences everywhere: in the restaurants; in El Mercado, the largest Mexican market in the US, which lies just across the way from Mi Tierra; and in the murals.

Mexicans have elevated the mural into an art form, and more than 100 works adorn walls in the neighbourhood known as Westside. Depictions of the Virgin Mary both in traditional and psychedelic purple versions alternate with other images, including colourful floral patterns. My particular favourite, outside La Chiquita bakery, shows couples dancing while a guitarist plays, accompanied by an accordion. The dance steps are marked on the footpath beneath the mural, so you can practise the steps.

The Latin influence has dominated San Antonio since the 17th century, when Spanish priests established a number of missions here. Living alone on the frontier, the missionaries built self-sufficient communities that featured not just magnificent churches but also gardens and orchards, kitchens and workshops. Most of the missions now lie just outside town however, the one in the centre of town has become a touchstone of Texan history.
The mission originally known as San Antonio de Valero is now better known as The Alamo, and was the scene of a disastrous battle in Texas's fight for independence from Mexico. At the next battle, the Battle of San Jacinto, the Texan troops rode into battle crying, "Remember the Alamo!" and vanquished the much larger army of General Santa Anna. For many Americans, The Alamo is something approaching a shrine, but the building itself is dark and offers little to see.

Will Duff, of Amspacher Tree Service, cuts tree limbs into smaller logs as he clears downed limbs from a home in Manchester Township on Friday. Many companies still have a backlog of work from this winter's ice storms. (Kate Penn Daily Record/Sunday News)
Dan Ritz was already trying to catch up with a 2 1/2 month backlog of tree-removal and tree-trimming work from February's ice storm before Tuesday's rain and winds ripped through York County.
Since Tuesday, Ritz's company has logged 50 to 60 telephone calls a day from folks with tree limbs, or even entire trees, felled by the storm.
"I don't think there's a tree service in York or Lancaster county that's not feeling the same thing," Ritz, a co-owner with his two sons of Specialty Tree Service in Hellam Township, said Friday.
Tuesday's storm sliced quickly and brutally through York County, upending trees, bringing down power lines and cutting electricity to thousands.
The downed trees left in the storm's wake have meant long days for folks like Bruce Stryker, a co-owner of York Tree Service in West Manchester Township.
"Just like any major storm, it's crazy," Stryker said. "The phone is ringing off the hook."

Firefoxs tabs are normally an easy and convenient way to work online, neatly organising your open sites into separate, isolated views.
There may still be times when you need to view two or more tabs at the same time, though -- and thats whereTile Tabscan help, instantly organizing your chosen Firefox tabs into a single tiled window.
The extension is absolutely packed with commands, functions, options and settings, and it can seem intimidating at first. Fortunately its core features are straightforward enough. Open three or four tabs, click Tile > New Layout > All Tabs -- Horizontal, and youll see all your current tabs tiled one above the other.
This isnt just some static view of your tabs. Splitter bars enable you to resize your tiles as required. And each tile is effectively a separate browser, just as before, so you can click links and work as normal in one tile, while the others remain visible.
Alternatively, if these tiles are displaying related content, you might press F8 (or click Tile > Sync Scroll) to link them all together. Now scroll one tab and the others scroll, too: very convenient.
For this first example we've tiled all our tabs, which is quite drastic: every tab displays the tiled view. A simpler, less intrusive alternative would be to click Tile > Tile New Tab > Below. This splits your current tab into two tiles, with the current page at the top, your new tab page below, while all other tabs remain untouched.
Setting up the ideal tile layout can take a while, but your work can be saved for easy recall later. Tiles can be manipulated in various ways -- added, removed, collapsed, expanded -- and with 70-plus settings available, theres plenty of scope for configuringTile Tabsto suit your needs.
But if you dont want to go that far, just a simple layout change may be useful occasionally. And whatever you do is easily reversed: press F12, or click Tile > Close Layout (or Close All Layouts if you've been busy), your tiles are instantly closed, and every open tab is restored to its original state.

This tile sends four "vines" up the facade of a Moorish Revival building on 27th and Vliet Streets.
Published July 11, 2014 at 10:01 a.m.
Some streets in Milwaukee seem to specialize in different features, though it's often subtle and surely not even really true. It's just more the things that catch our eye on our daily commute.
That's what led me to begin to notice and appreciate the relatively fancy facades on industrial buildings along State Street.
And, lately, I've been noticing how many buildings on Vliet Street have facades featuring different kinds of tile work. Here are some of my favorites.
The Wisconsin Architecture and History Inventory calls this gorgeous two-story storefront, "Probably the best preserved example in Milwaukee of the use of stock terra cotta tiles with Art Deco motifs to decorate a small store." Built in 1922, the structure long housed a furniture store and appears to be vacant at the moment. The cream-colored terra cotta is highly ornate, with yellow and rust-colored highlights, and "Wile Bldg." written is grey script. Alas, I have been unable to determine the architect responsible.
Martin Tullgren & Sons were the masters of glazed terra cotta in this town and you may recognize their buildings like the one 60th and North, the Downtown home of George Watts & Son and the Prospect Avenue building that was once home to the Avant Garde Coffee House and now houses Mystery One Bookstore and Allium restaurant, among others. But drive around town and you'll see that this eye catching cream colored tile, sometimes stark white, and often decorated with motifs like these, are everywhere. This example was built in 1923.

Pillow fight sets off Nebraska dorm sprinkler Associated Press |
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) A pillow fight that set off a college dorm sprinkler system led to the evacuation of five floors of Schramm Hall on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln City Campus on Friday night.
The Lincoln Journal Star reports (http://bit.ly/1mVLS8t ) that campers staying at this week's Christ in Youth Conference got in a pillow fight just after 11 p.m. Friday and hit a sprinkler on the fifth floor, setting off the sprinkler system.
UNL Police Officer Greg Byelick says police and firefighters arrived to find all five floors damaged from water coming out of a sprinkler head on the fifth floor.
The group was relocated to Abel and Pound halls for the remainder of its stay.
Byelick says there is not yet an estimate on the damage.
