Architects, public discuss future Austin visitor center

A FORRES firm of architects received four awards at two ceremonies in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Tom Duff (partner LDN Architects) and Jana Hutt (Knockando Woilmill Trust) receiving the RIAS award from President Iain Connelly (centre).
LDN Architects which are based on St Leonards Road, was presented with accolades at the RICS Awards Scotland ceremony in Edinburgh and the RIAS Awards Dinner in Glasgow, for their work on behalf of the Knockando Woolmill Trust.
The firm was responsible for developing designs and overseeing the implementation of a 2million restoration project at the woolmill.
To win these awards is a significant achievement, said partner, Tom Duff. LDN Architects is delighted to have its work acknowledged in this way.
All of the category A listed buildings at the woolmill, which has been open to the public since 2012, were restored and adapted for new uses.
The visitor reception, caf, toilets and education facilities provided in the byre were extended using the footprint of former lean-to buildings, while the mill house was adapted to house design studios and staff accommodation.

2014 Looks Promising for Cuhaci & Peterson Architects

Construction on the new Gulfport High School could start early next year. This week, architects unveiled the latest design for the campus, and district leaders laid out the demolition and construction timeline. The new Gulfport High will have features not found in any other school in Mississippi.
"Wow! This is going to be a neat complex," said Gulfport Schools Superintendent Glen East.
On Friday, East proudly showed us the updated plans for the new Gulfport High School. One drawing showed what the campus looks like now, and the last one showed what it will look like in two years.
"The first vibrations of the wrecking ball will probably be in January or February, we hope, when we begin to take down those buildings on the north side of the campus," said East.
The classrooms in the Vocational Complex, the backside of the old gym, and the Math building will be torn down first. The vocational students will move into classrooms near the cafeteria, while the math students will use every available classroom in the academic building.
"So it'll be a little chaotic at first, but it'll work," said East.
Once those buildings are demolished, construction will start on the three Academic Institutes to prepare students for future careers. They are designed to look like a downtown business district. For instance, instead of a long hallway, you willsee a winding walkway and plenty of windows and open space.
"So imagine yourself walking through a small town and passing a jewelry store, a book store, a hardware store. In these buildings, you'll walk through the same street. But you may see what the Allied Health students are doing or their wares are on display in the windows," said East.
"It's definitely unique from what we've seen in the past and we know of nothing like it in the country," he added.

The state of retail in Franklin County is a mixed picture these days.
Retailers are adding jobs again, and retail real-estate vacancy rates are down. Still, county sales-tax collections tied to retail fell in 2013 and, despite the sliding vacancy rates, there are no signs of new retail construction, according to a report released yesterday.
Things will never get back to where it was in the early 2000s, when you had retail peak the way it did, said Jung Kim, director of research for the Columbus Chamber. The nature of the business has changed so much."
The annual report (PDF), produced by the chamber and the Franklin County commissioners, is meant to provide local political and business leaders with a snapshot of an industry that is a key source of revenue for the county. It was released in conjunction with an annual retail summit held yesterday morning Downtown.
We live and die by retail. As counties go, retail is our bread and butter, County Commissioner Marilyn Brown said. We need the retail economy for our general fund.
Retailers added 533 jobs in 2012 and 1,159 last year, reversing a trend of falling retail employment dating to 2001. Retail jobs are back to their highest levels since the recession, according to the report. But the 68,349 retail workers in the county last year remain well below the 93,402 the county had in 2001.
Even though retail employment has stabilized, Kim said the growth in e-commerce continues to shift employment away from stores to logistics jobs such as trucking and warehousing.
The vacancy rate for retail space in central Ohio has been falling since 2009, but retailers are absorbing existing space rather than building new stores, according to the report.
We built up retail space over several decades, Kim said. Even after tearing down City Center, there are still vacancies around High Street. The nature of retail is changing from being oriented toward needing space to making it more about the use of space.
