Ridgeland-based C Spire, a diversified telecommunications and technology services company, plans to introduce a suite of next-generation home automation, security and monitoring services by the end of the year.
C Spire says its all-digital, IP-based services will be the first in Mississippi offered by a telecommunications provider. It will give consumers control and security of their homes using any web-enabled device, PC, tablet or smartphone with the Android or Apple iOS operating systems.
Called C Spire Home, the services will include the companys previously announced high speed, fiber-based Gigabit Internet service, digital HD television, IP home phone services along with new home automation, security and monitoring services.
The remote home monitoring, automation and security services will be able to control and manage devices such as cameras, windows and door sensors, locks, thermostats, appliance and lighting controls and smoke, carbon monoxide, motion and broken glass sensors.
The home automation, security and monitoring services are expected to debut by the end of the year. Initial availability will be in one or more of the first C Spire Fiber to the Home cities of Quitman, Ridgeland and Starkville that have qualified areas for related services through pre-registration. Other markets will be added in the future.
C Spire Home is a next-generation suite of Internet, digital television, phone, security, monitoring and automation services that helps move us one step closer to making our homes a hub for smarter living, said Suzy Hays, senior vice president of Consumer Markets for C Spire. With its unique integration and an intuitive app to easily control and manage every feature, this platform gives consumers what they want and need meaningful applications coupled with simple, easy interfaces.
The company plans to disclose details on monthly pricing and one-time installation costs soon, but Hays said the suite of home security, monitoring and automation services from C Spire will be competitive with other smart home solutions on the market today.
The C Spire Home touchscreen color control panel, built by Honeywell, is UL certified and will serve as the primary hub to manage C Spires all-digital home security, monitoring and automation platform.

J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. will announce today that it has launched a $5.5 million program with Liberty Bank in Detroit to provide home restoration loans and down payment assistance for those buying houses in Detroit through the Detroit Land Bank Authoritys property auctions.
The program is part of $100 million in loans and grants that Chase announced in May to support economic development in the city over five years. Chase now has put $20 million of the commitment to work on blight reduction, workforce development, home repair and small-business growth.
The home restoration program, scheduled to be announced at the Henry Ford Academy elementary school in Detroit, initially will target the Boston-Edison and East English Village neighborhoods, beginning with an auction of Boston-Edison homes July 28. The program eventually will expand to other neighborhoods.
The commitment to Liberty Bank will come from the J.P. Morgan Chase Foundation and go to Liberty Banks nonprofit community development bank, Liberty Foundation Inc.
The contribution will create a $5 million loan-loss reserve fund for Liberty Bank to provide up to $20 million in new rehab residential mortgage loans. With the reserve fund, Liberty Bank will be able to expand underwriting for rehab loans and provide flexible terms to eligible borrowers who buy a home through the citys Neighbors Wanted property auction.
Chase also will create a $300,000 down payment assistance fund to be managed by Liberty Bank. Under the fund, eligible Detroit residents can receive up to $10,000 in down payment assistance.
The remaining $200,000 will help Liberty Bank manage the restoration program.
Revitalizing Detroits neighborhoods is a critical priority for the citys recovery, and we believe the home restoration program will support the auction and accelerate the turnaround underway in key neighborhoods, Peter Scher, executive vice president and head of corporate responsibility for Chase, said in a news release.
Detroit residents can learn more about eligibility by visiting Liberty Banks branch in Detroit at 9108 Woodward Ave. or calling (313) 873-3311.
Borrowers must occupy the home as their primary residence, be a current Detroit resident, participate in housing counseling, demonstrate an ability to repay the loan and comply with all auction rules.

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) July 11, 2014
E-M Air Systems Inc. (http://www.EMAir.ca), the leading provider of custom commercial, residential, and industrial air conditioning (A/C) and heating repair, maintenance, and installation services in the Greater Toronto Area, is addressing the recent history of heat alerts in the GTA.
Each year, Toronto Public Health monitors heat alerts between May 15 and September 30 and records them in a chart. These alerts are important because they offer some insight into when extreme heat is likely to occur, says Enzo Colosimo, founder of E-M Air Systems Inc. History is usually a good indicator for future weather patterns, so these alerts should be taken into consideration. (Source: Alert Statistics - Heat Alert and Extreme Heat Alert, City of Toronto web site; http://app.toronto.ca/tpha/heatStats.html, last accessed July 3, 2014.)
Colosimo advises that both infants and the elderly are particularly at risk and special attention should be paid to these advisories, with some kind of plan in place to protect these groups. Extreme heat is a serious thing; while there are stories of pets being left in cars and passing away from heat, young children and seniors are equally as susceptible and need to take extra precautions.
According to the chart, last year alone, July had one heat alert and four extreme heat alerts. Going back just two years to 2012, July had four heat alerts and seven extreme heat alerts, Colosimo adds. That should tell GTA residents that July is the month they need to prepare for; using this chart as a reference, it is the month in which extreme heat alerts seem to be happening the most.
Colosimo suggests that all homeowners and residents ensure their air conditioners and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are working properly. If the air conditioner or HVAC system needs to be fixed, those repairs should be completed before July. And if necessary, residents should contact a company that specializes in air conditioner installations.
Air conditioners and heating and cooling systems should be tested often before any extreme weather kicks in, he notes. Furthermore, for homeowners in new homes, dont forget that while a subdivision is under construction, opening windows may not be an option due to heavy dust from construction, meaning a central air conditioner needs to be installed.
Its imperative to stay cool inside ones home, Colosimo The staff at E-M Air Systems Inc. are experts at air conditioner installations and can quickly replace old or non-functional air conditioners with top-of-the-line brands.
E-M Air Systems Inc. has been installing custom commercial, residential, and industrial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in the new construction and retrofit market in Southern Ontario since 1987. Because E-M Air Systems Inc. designs every HVAC system it installs and manufactures the duct work in its own sheet metal shop, clients do not have to rely on outside firms for costly blueprints or work; this translates into greater value and the industrys most competitive pricing. E-M Air Systems Inc. is a member of the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI), the Canadian Home Builders Association, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, the Technical Safety and Standards Authority (TSSA), and the Residential Heating Ventilation Contractors Association (RHVCA). To learn more about E-M Air Systems Inc, visit the companys web site at http://www.EMAir.ca or call E-M Air Systems Inc. toll-free 1-800-893-6793.

TIP OF THE WEEK
Dan Copeland, a JEA customer solutions field representative and a member of the Northeast Florida Builders Association E-Council, sent along a few energy-saving tips for those who are considering building a new home.
First up is some advice on radiant barriers. Copeland says not all Jacksonville builders install radiant barriers in their new homes, so inquire about the option. A radiant barrier is a thin layer of reflective metal laminated to the roof decking. It helps reduce the heat transferred to the duct work from the hot roof, ultimately reducing a homes cooling costs. Cooling is the largest part of most electricity bills in the Jacksonville area. A radiant-barrier upgrade to an existing home is difficult to justify due to higher costs. However, in new construction it takes no additional time to install, and the upgrade cost is far lower, usually less than $1,000 per home.
Next week, look for Dans advice on picking a heating and cooling system. For more tips, contact him at copede@jea.com, or visit jea.com/green.

In the Garden
Q: My roses are looking diseased and lots of leaves are falling off. Will cutting back now help to make them attractive again?
A: This wet spring has made roses highly susceptible to black spot. This is a fungus disease that begins with spotted leaves that soon turn yellow. In severe infestations most of the leaves fall off, leaving the shrub bare and unsightly.
It cant hurt to cut the rose back by a third. Hopefully that will stimulate the buds at nodes just below the cut to put out new growth. Feed your rose with a mix of alfalfa meal and organic rose food. Make sure your rose has adequate water, but use care not to wet new leaves or they will likely become infected with black spot as well.
As a precaution, spray the new growth weekly during rainy weather with environmentally friendly neem oil, available at nurseries and garden centers. If all goes well, the leaves will grow back and your rose will put on a nice display of blooms by fall.
Consider replacing your susceptible variety with a Knock Out rose. These roses are tested and only those varieties that are highly resistant ever reach the market. They lack fragrance, but they make up for it with attractive disease-free foliage and practically nonstop flowering all summer long.
Q: Ive noticed swarms of little moths hovering over my lawn and lots of small brown, dead spots are appearing. Are the two related?
A: There are a lot of possible causes for brown spots in a lawn, but the fact that youve noticed numerous moths above the lawn makes it likely that your lawn is infested with sod webworm.
The troublemakers are the offspring of the moths, -t o 1-inch-long caterpillars that hide in silken tunnels during the day and then come out at night to chew grass blades off at the base.
Just to be sure webworms are causing the damage, examine the grass. If you see silken tunnels and green frass (polite word for pelletlike bug poop) your lawn has a sod-webworm infestation.

Glasto festival 'Wombles' make use of things left behind
12:09pm Thursday 10th July 2014 in News By Newsdesk
AS 175,000 Glastonbury festivalites piled out of Worthy Farm, one Puriton army made their way in to make a killing on the wealth of camping gear left behind.
Neglected tents, chairs, wellington boots all were collected by the energetic team behind Puritons Party in the Park.
One way or another the haul will bring a big boost to the community music event on Saturday, August 16.
Co-organiser Alan Scott told the Mercury: We picked up a million fold-up chairs, gazebos, pop-up tents, blow-up air beds, you name it ... we brought back a trolley-load.
Going up on the Tuesday after Glastonbury is a big experience for us, and driving past the big stages, even though theres no-one on them, you just go My God, Dolly Parton was there.
We got there at 8am and left at 2pm we were Wombles! Its brilliant.
Tents will be transformed into bunting; wellington boots will be power-washed for local Oxfam shops while other items will be sold off in aid of the Puriton event.
The gang met other community, church groups and charities at the world-famous Pilton music festival site.
