When an employee at Gino's Restaurant in Baton Rouge cut into an eggplant Monday, he found "GOD."

Chef Jermarcus Brady couldn't believe what he was seeing. "I saw a miraculous image formed by the seeds," said Jermarcus Brady. "It spelled out the word God!" Chef Brady has many responsibilities, one being cutting, salting and sauteing eggplants.

"When you sliced into it, the pattern showed from the seeds that were forming in the inside the letters G-O-D as God," said Brady. "I couldn't think of anything. I just had to tell somebody to come look at it."

Brady showed the eggplant to the owner of the restaurant and fellow coworkers and took photos, but he believed it was meant to be shared with everyone.

Brady says he is no stranger to life's struggle, and his faith has gotten him through. He raised four kids on a limited income before becoming a chef. He says the significance of the rare eggplant seeds aren't lost on him.

"Through the road, he's showing me that 'hey, I'm real' and that's the only thing I can depend on," said Brady.

The restaurant's co-owner, Gino Marino, has been in business for nearly 50 years and says with a find this rare, it is something he will never forget.

"You could cut one million eggplants and you'd probably never see that again, it's that rare," said Marino."God is within us and he has different ways of showing it in our lives, and this is just one way of showing it."

Whether it is divine intervention or not, it does not matter to Brady. "I don't know what it means. All I know is it tells me 'hey, he's real' and there's nothing that can change my mind about that."

Business owners have gotten a birds-eye view of demolition and construction on Hypolita Street, and for some it hasnt been a welcome sight.

Colleen Messner, owner of The Spice & Tea Exchange at 59 Hypolita St., said traffic to her business has decreased since work began.

And there have been some surprises.

I had a dump truck butt up against my door, she said. It really hurt us.

Several business owners and employees in the area said while they are looking forward to the benefits of the Downtown Improvement District project, the construction has come with a price in the form of slowdowns in sales and fewer visitors.

Construction began in April to improve Hypolita, Spanish and Treasury streets. The project includes brick pavers, new light fixtures and upgraded utilities.

The project cost is more than $3.3 million, which includes site furniture, construction inspection services and the cost of buying bricks, according to Reuben Franklin Jr., project engineer.

The funding comes from the citys storm water, utilities and general funds, and $750,000 is being paid by adjacent property owners and can be paid over 15 years.

The cost of construction alone is $2.7 million, according to Franklin.

Work on Hypolita Street is projected to be finished mid-October. The entire project is expected to be finished in April.

CEDAR FALLS | Area Education Agency 267 is planning an estimated $660,000 in remodeling and upgrades to its facilities during the next year.

The AEA 267 board of directors Wednesday approved a facilities plan that also shows projects for the two prior years and proposals for future years.

Among the 11 projects, four are at facilities in Cedar Falls, where the agency is headquartered. The largest of those is remodeling of the Cedar Falls conference center with a first-year cost estimated at $350,000. The project would continue into the next year with an estimated additional cost of $500,000.

Other Cedar Valley projects include $90,000 to work on the pipe system at River Hills School, $25,000 for heating, ventilating and air conditioning replacement at all Cedar Falls properties, and $8,500 for the education service office remodeling.

An estimated $40,000 will also be spent on concrete work and parking lots at all AEA 267 properties and $15,000 on general repairs that are not listed.

Other work is happening at the agencys Clear Lake and Marshalltown locations.

Dave Nicholson, AEA 267s chief financial officer, said competitive bids are required for projects estimated to cost more than $130,000. Those estimated to cost at least $72,000 require the agency to get quotes from contractors. For projects estimated at more than $25,000, the AEA must get approval from the Iowa Department of Education.

One 2013-14 project not yet finalized is work on the River Hills roof, which had an estimated cost of $84,968. The work was scheduled to take place this summer.

AEA 267 provides special education, technology and teacher support services to school districts in 18 north and northeast Iowa counties.

SECTION 1: EXAM GUIDELINES

In order to obtain a Master Plumber license, you must meet the following qualifications:

Be at least eighteen (18) years old

Be able to read and write the English language

Have good moral character so as not to adversely impact your fitness to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Master Plumber

In addition, all applicants must meet one (1) of the following levels of experience:

Have at least seven (7) years of total experience* within the ten (10) years prior to application in the design and installation of plumbing systems under the direct and continuing supervision of a licensed Master Plumber in the United States

Have received a bachelor's degree in engineering or appropriate engineering technology from a college or university registered by the New York State Department of Education and have had at least five (5) years of total experience within the seven (7) years prior to application in the design and installation of plumbing systems under the direct and continuing supervision of a licensed Master Plumber in the United States. At least two (2) years of this experience must be in New York City

Be a New York State-licensed professional (Registered Architect or Professional Engineer) and have at least three (3) years of experience within the five (5) years prior to application in the design and installation of plumbing systems in the United States. At least one (1) year of this experience must be in New York City

Have at least seven (7) years of total experience* within the ten (10) years prior to application with at least two (2) years of experience working in the design and installation of plumbing systems under the direct and continuing supervision of a licensed Master Plumber in the United States. The balance of experience may be obtained by performing maintenance, replacement and repair plumbing work on existing buildings while working for a New York City agency as long as the work is under the direct and continuing supervision of a licensed Master Plumber supervisor employed by the City agency

Plumber ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work after illegally carrying out work on gas boiler

A PLUMBER who carried out illegal and dangerous gas work at a family home has been ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

John Ranfield was working on a bathroom job in Saffron Way, in Tiptree, when he was asked to fit a new gas boiler.

Although Ranfield was accredited by City and Guilds, he has never been on the Gas Safe or Corgi register, which all plumbers who wish to work on gas appliances must apply to join by law.

In the weeks after he fitted the boiler, Kelvin Cansick and his wife found their water was not being heated correctly and the appliance often cut out.

When an independent expert from the Gas Safe Register visited the house, he found the boiler posed an immediate risk to life or property because the gas flame was unstable - meaning the boiler could have been emitting poisonous gases.

Although it was immediately disconnected, the expert found five more defects, which included damage to the gas flue.

An investigation was subsequently carried out by the Health and Safety Executive.

Ranfield, 63, of Lansdowne Close, in Tiptree, who is a legitimate plumber, admitted breaking health and safety regulations by carrying out the work illegally in April 2013 when he appeared at Colchester Magistratess Court today.

York plumber joins new association

A PLUMBER in York has become one of the first members of a new association created to reduce the risk of water-borne illnesses.

Alwyn Glover, based in Little Hallfield Road, is one of the first members of the Legionella Risk Assessment and Disinfection Scheme run by the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors (APHC).

The company says it has joined the association in a bid to benefit from being associated with a trade body that represents quality and professionalism and identifies it a reputable trader.

Andy Holmes, of Alwyn Glover Ltd said: "Being part of a recognised association provides us with increased credibility and also offers us industry support and advice.

"We pride ourselves on offering a high standard of workmanship and service and hope this accreditation will offer new customers confidence that we are experts in our sector and peace of mind."

Membership of the scheme demonstrates that the trader compiles with the Health and Safety Executives Approved Code of Practice and plays an important role in reducing outbreaks of Legionnaires disease, which is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia to which everyone is susceptible to infection.
