Gutter Installation Guide by Steadman’s Rain Gutters

    - July 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Proper gutter installation plays a very important role in the maintenance of your home. Most homeowners don't spend a lot of time thinking about their gutters, but understanding their importance may prevent you some costly home repair bills in the future.

Aluminum gutters are a great rain solution product. They are low cost, easily maintained and a long lasting solution for many homes. They are weather-resistant and maintain their integrity in cold climates. Seamless aluminum gutters will not rust and have a life expectancy of approximately 25 - 30 years.

5" Seamless k-style Gutters: are the most common gutter in North America and has a rainwater capacity of 1.2 gallons per foot. They can be used in new installations or to replace existing gutters. The traditional K-style blends in well with almost all homes. If properly cleaned and maintained, they will provide many years of trouble free service.

    Gutter Hangers

Gutter hangers are brackets that interlock into the front and back of the gutter and are then screwed into the fascia under the drip edge flashing.

For standard fascia gutter installations, gutter hangers, sometimes called hidden hangers, should be installed every 24 inches. In the colder climates, you may encounter heavy ice and snow loads in the gutter. This extra weight will require hangers every 12 to 18 inches.

    Gutter Screws

The gutter screws used for fastening the gutter hangers to the fascia board should be #10 x 1.5" or # 10 x 2" long cadmium, zinc or stainless steel wood grip and have a hex head for use with a 1/4" nut driver.

If you have an older home with gutters, they were most likely installed with the spike and ferrule method. A type of gutter installation in which a metal cylinder or tube is placed inside the gutter to strengthen it and keep it from bending. The spike is driven through the face of the gutter, through the ferrule and into the wood fascia board.

While the spike and ferrule method was the standard for years, most gutter installation companies have changed to some form of the gutter hanger with a screw anchoring method.

Local Man Starts Over – Will Open New Home Service Business in Flower Mound on July 14th

    - July 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Flower Mound, TX (PRWEB) July 07, 2014

Window Genie announces the grand opening of its newest location in Flower Mound, TX on Monday July 14th. Blair Littlefield is the owner/operator. Window Genie is a nationally ranked franchise specializing in window cleaning, window tinting, pressure washing, gutter cleaning and more. Window Genie of Flower Mound will service surrounding northwest Dallas communities such as Flower Mound, Lewisville and Grapevine.

Prior to purchasing a Window Genie franchise, Littlefield spent 13 years working for a car dealer in the greater Dallas area before joining the corporate staff of an automotive accessory company in Chicago for 21 years. After the company he worked for took a major hit during the recession, Littlefield began thinking about his next move. He said, Not many people can say they love their jobs, and I loved mine for over 20 years; I was happy to go into work every day. When the recession hit, a lot of changes were made and I began feeling differently so I quit and moved home. For Littlefield, home has always been Flower Mound, where his family lives. Im glad I moved home when I did because my father was in poor health and I was able to spend the last 8 or so months of his life in Texas with him before he passed. He had always admired people with the guts and drive to open their own business, so with the support of my family I began researching small business and franchise options in the greater Dallas area.

Through his research, Littlefield connected with Phil and Joan Cansler, Regional Developers with Window Genie. The Canslers were incredible and made the process so easy on me. Although I was researching several franchises at once, something kept me coming back to Window Genie, Littlefield said. I met the corporate support staff via Skype and it just felt right; this was a team I could trust and feel good working with. I got in touch with existing Window Genie franchise owners who gave me hours of their time to answer my questions and paint a picture of what the life of a franchise owner with Window Genie looked like. All these guys were incredibly helpful and honest about their ups and downs, but all were happy and said they would do it again.

Ultimately Littlefield chose Window Genie because it most closely met his needs based on interests, strengths, weaknesses and goals. I didnt want a storefront or a lot of inventory to deal with and Window Genie is a business you can run from your home or a small office. I loved the service aspect of Window Genie; I get to interact with and serve my community every day. Ill continue building relationships with customers who will keep having us back to perform different services; you cant beat that, he said. This wasnt a quick decision, but I think I made the right one. Working for myself and being my own boss sounds better and better each time I say it. I cant wait to open for business, tackle these challenges and see what Im made of.

Window Genie of Flower Mound officially opens for business on July 14th. For more information, please contact owner/operator, Blair Littlefield at blittlefield(at)windowgenie(dot)com or (972) 539-0505. Estimates are always free and field technicians are fully trained, insured and bonded.

Franchise opportunities available nationwide. For more information please visit http://www.windowgeniefranchise.com.

HAPPY HANDYMAN: Answers given to household questions

    - July 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

I cant tell you how many great questions we had on the email this week. I want to share all of them with you. Hopefully they answer some of the questions around your house.

Question 1: My neighbor has gutters and was continually having problems with leaves and gunk weighing down the gutters. So he decided to have gutter screens put on. I was shocked about the cost of the gutter screens. I have gutters also. I like them because they put the recent rain we have in the spot that I want it. I have problems with leaves also, but will not put screens on at the cost that he did. You always come up with great products that save me money. What about this one Johnnie?

Answer: Well there is a alternative to expensive gutter screens, and you can Do It Yourself. I like to call it Not In My Gutter but it is really called gutter screens. They come in two colors white and brown, and they cost $2.99 for three feet of screening. So if you need 100 feet of screen, it will cost you less than $100. So simple to install, just slip under the shingle, and snap over the gutter. Thats it! Say goodbye to leaves and junk clogging up the gutters and put that much needed rain in the rain barrel to use later. Call me or email me and I will tell where to get them.

Question: Please help me. I have a covered patio and every morning I have frog poop at the back door. There is a small crack in the foundation between the garage door and the frogs hide there. I am so tired of cleaning frog poop. I have tried that Dog and Cat repellant, but it doesnt keep them away. Johnnie please help me get rid of the frog and his POOP.

Answer: Okay, this is a new question for me. First let clear up the crack in the foundation. Use a product that comes in a caulking tube called Slab. Just fill in the crack and let it cure. Its the only one that has superior adhesion and flexibility. And you can fill in wide cracks. Smooth it out with a plastic putty knife. Just use soap and water to clean up. Then I want you to use something else to repel the frogs. Its something that we use for repelling birds. Its sticky, so only put it at where they are coming in and around that area. You can smooth it out, they wont like the way it feels and so they wont come back. The product is called Bye Bye Birdie. I think that this will keep the frogs (and poop) away. If you are still having a problem call me.

Question: Last night our sweet grandson thought he was helping me polish the furniture. I wasnt watching and he polished my table with a rock that we had brought him. The scratches are very light and have not gone down below the stain. However you can definitely see the scratches. What would be the right way to fix this? I will be watching our grandson a little closer from now on.

Answer: Lets use the Restore A Finish first. Use a soft rag and wipe across the whole table and not just on the scratched area. This will give you a complete look. After it dries, use the Feed and Wax to add protection. Give us a call and we can send you a color chart on the Restore A Finish.

Question: I have two hairline cracks in the bottom of my Jacuzzi tub. I dont want to remove the tub because I have had estimates on this and its real expensive. Is there a way to fix the cracks so I can use the tub?

Answer: I want you to use the Plumbers Goop. Its a clear adhesive that will stretch and stick to the tub. I want you to stand in the tub to put weight on the cracks so they will be at their widest. Fill in the cracks and smooth them out the best you can. It wont be a transparent fix but at least you will be able to use the tub and the cracks wont get any worse. Let the Goop cure for 24 hours before using the tub again.

Question: I have a home in Costa Rica and the shower doors are completely caked with lime from hard water. What can I do? I dont want to replace them.

Selwyn fencing guide helps explain rules

    - July 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A new pamphlet and guide have been developed to help explain existing fencing rules in Selwyn to people considering building or adding fences.

People are able to choose their own fencing, but need to make sure the fence complies with District Plan requirements, which include rules about how and where fences can be established, depending on the location of the fence.

In Living Z areas, a residential zone in parts of Rolleston, Lincoln and Prebbleton and in the Lowes Road Outline Development Plan area in Rolleston, specific fencing rules are in place affecting the sides of properties facing either road or reserve boundaries. These rules allow for individual styles of fencing, depending on the location and the intended purpose of the fence within certain parameters that affect the height and way fences are built, as stated in the District Plan.

"These rules are in place to help create attractive, safe neighbourhoods," says Gabi Wolfer, Urban Designer at Selwyn District Council.

"Fencing is more than just a physical barrier defining the edge of a property. Fencing is part of the street scene. If it is well designed, it can complement the environment and can help to make a neighbourhood into an attractive and a pleasant place to live and visit."

Gabi says that fencing also plays an important role in providing security both for people living in a section, and for adults and children using a footpath, road or reserve.

"The rules are designed to ensure that the parts of the property which border street corners or reserves are visible, which helps to reduce the risk of tagging and crime, while also improving sight lines for motorists and making it safer for people using public spaces nearby."

Who are you gonna call? Barb Busters!

    - July 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    July 7, 2014, 9:54 a.m.

Concerned at the number of native animals becoming caught in barbed wire on fences, Young District Landcare decided to try and do something practical to help.

Concerned at the number of native animals becoming caught in barbed wire on fences, Young District Landcare decided to try and do something practical to help.

They came up with the idea of Barb Busters.

The group recently held two working bees on Young properties, removing over three kilometres of barbed wire.

The first property off Moppity Road forms part of the Douglas Range, sometimes referred to as Black Range, and adjoins Young Nature Reserve, a local National Park.

The second property is in the Crowther area and is part of the Illunie Range.

Both properties are very rich in flora and fauna, enabling the groups to explore the bushland before getting down to work.

Unfortunately, the remains of two Tawny Frogmouths were found in the barbed wire, so the group felt a great sense of satisfaction after removing the barbed wire, in the knowledge that no more Tawny Frogmouths or other native animals would be caught.

One volunteer who helped on both days was Young resident Marianne OToole.
