Firm creates awareness on roof restoration

    - July 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Managing Director, Plusworld Roofing Limited, Mr. John Igbaifua, has said that roofs can be restored as they age, rather than being pulled down.

Igbaifua, who spoke at a seminar to sensitise and train people on roof restoration, said no matter how bad a roof got, it could be repaired and made new.

He said there was the need for proper handling of roofing and maintenance in the country, as this could also create jobs.

He said, Coming from a background in real estate, I found this a problem and it served as a motivation because I found out that there were lots of roofs that needed to be restored rather than being pulled down. Your roof tells people the kind of person that you are because that is the first thing that people see in your building; it is a crucial part of the building.

Over time, I have also found out that if you want to remain in this business of roof repairs and restoration, you must use quality products.

According to Igbaifua, the awareness on roof restoration and its importance in building aesthetics is very low in the country.

It took a long time for people to believe in what we are doing, but they are coming to terms with it gradually. It was more like a culture shock; people found it difficult to believe this kind of thing but now the awareness is growing. No matter how bad a roof is, it can be restored and this is one of the many fora we will be organising to create awareness, he said.

Igbaifua said roof repairs was in different stages, including inspection; cleaning of debris, moss and grimes; waterproofing application and repainting, which will result in better protection and appearance of the roof and the building in general.

The Project Manager, Plusworld Roofing, Mr. Franklin Ojeaburu, said the roof was an important part of building that must be cared for as much as the floors and walls.

According to him, restoration brings the roof back to its original function, making it watertight and adding beauty to the entire building.

    Watching Money Flow Into Bonds

    - July 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Why did everyone get this wrong last year?

There is so much cash out there.

People were nervous about the economic recovery in the first quarter of the year, whether it was the weather or whatever people wanted to attribute the slowing of the economy to.

There were signs we were not seeing the recovery people were expecting so people went to safe haven trades.

You have central banks around the world continuing to stimulate the economy.

What this meant for investors is they have funneled more cash into the classic total return bond funds than since the first quarter of 2013. they are coming back and saying we are buying into the yield -- story that yields will stay low for a long time.

Is a still the case after the thursday job numbers that we had more additions?

James fuller says he thinks it could be the first quarter of next year and beyond.

He is forecasting a rate increase out in 2016. it is pulling forward a bit.

On the flipside, you have the international monetary fund saying they might reduce their global growth forecast.

How to Keep Your Home Cool this Summer for Cheap

    - July 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The summer heat might be a welcome change after winters brutal temperatures--until the electricity bill arrives.

When you think about summer, 55% of your total utility bill goes to cooling, says home improvement expert Danny Lipford. [Your air conditioner is] the highest use system that you have in your home all year round. It only makes sense to take steps to make it more efficient and work less to drive that cost down.

You can lower your cooling costs by 30 to 40% by making your homes systems work efficiently and tweaking your behaviors, experts say.

The obvious cost-cutting tip is being mindful of a homes temperature. After all, every degree that you turn your thermostat up will save you money.

Here are experts money-saving tips that will keep you cool this summer and your budget intact:

    Use Ceiling and Exhaust Fans

Running a fan counterclockwise will have a cooling effect of six degrees, but they wont lower the rooms temperature, according to Lipford.

Since a fan saves you money only when the room is occupied, be sure to turn it off when you leave.

To keep moisture at bay, turn the range fan on when cooking and run the bathroom fans during and 10 to 15 minutes after a shower. The moisture in the house makes it harder to keep it cool and causes your air conditioner to work more, says Lipford.

RTS Transit Center Construction Near Completion

    - July 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A massive construction project is underway in Downtown Rochester, and were only four months away until the work is done.

Mark Ballerstein has been working on the $50 million project since the very beginning. Ballerstein is the director of engineering for Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority.

He said a lot of work went into getting the transit ready. The enclosed, one-story facility is designed to accommodate 100 buses an hour. It will span an entire city block between St. Paul Street and North Clinton Avenue.

It will serve as the hub for RTS customers who ride the bus to and from downtown Rochester.

The building is equipped with the latest in modern technology. "In the ceiling above we have a ribbon which has changing light colors on it, which will make it interesting and different in appearance every part of the day. As customers come in they'll see something a little different, described Ballerstein.

Digital signage will also make the transit center user friendly."We have digital signs that will let the customers know when the buses are arriving and what time they should be leaving, said Ballerstein.

Chief Operating Officer Daniele Coll-Gonzalez says creating a hassle-free experience for customers was also a major part of the construction project. "They'll see big differences in their experience waiting for the bus in a climate-controlled, secure, safe facility."

Systems like the fire alarm, heating and cooling still need to be installed.

These parts of the project should begin in the next month and take another two or three more months to complete.

Gonzalez said it feels surreal that the project is near completion. To finally have this in Downtown Rochester is really going to have a major impact.

Schools rewiring to close digital gap

    - July 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CINCINNATI -- The thousands of miles of wiring frantically being strung throughout America's schools this summer may look like everyday Internet cables. They're actually lifelines of high-speed learning.

They are part of a more than $2 billion nationwide investment to close the gap between public school haves and have-nots, both of which are increasingly dependent on high-speed Internet to teach students.

The bandwidth gap has become the new equality measurement plaguing schools, education experts warn.

Stu Johnson, executive director of Connect Ohio, which advocates and monitors Internet accessibility in schools, says school technology will determine school success.

"It's a situation that makes the use of new, digitally enabled learning technologies a huge challenge and consequently the broadband gap is rapidly becoming the education achievement gap," said Johnson.

Adding to the urgency are the Common Core standards being rolled out in many states in the upcoming school year. Those standards come with online testing ?? which caused some problems among states, like Kentucky, that adopted the standards early.

Your school may be overflowing with laptops, tablets, e-books, smartphones and old-fashioned desktop computers. But they are useless if too many students and educators choke the building's online capabilities.

And federal officials and education experts warn that while the bandwidth gap is narrowing, it will still be too wide even after the latest rounds of new school wiring is done.

"Far too many schools have no Wi-Fi at all. For those that are lucky enough to be connected wirelessly, such networks often don't meet the capacity needs of students and teachers," Federal Communications Commissioner Tom Wheeler said in June.

That could release billions more federal dollars to help U.S. schools catch up.
