PIERCE COUNTY A bored inmate at the Fife Jail tried to cure his boredom by fiddling with a jail sprinkler system, causing the system to activate and flood multiple cells, the Pierce County Prosecutors Office said.

Jason Pierce, 25, is now charged with first-degree malicious mischief after he allegedly activated a fire suppression sprinkler inside his jail cell on July 1.

According to the Pierce County Prosecutor, Pierce was on the top bunk of a bed in his cell when he grew bored. Looking to occupy himself, Pierce reached up and played with one of the fire represses sprinklers above his head.

Video footage allegedly shows he reached upwards multiple times until the sprinkler released. The sprinkler flooded four cells at the jail, and completely soaked multiple mattresses. The jail didnt function normally for at least 45 minutes as guards cleaned up the mess, prosecutors said.

Pierce allegedly told police he didnt know the sprinkler would activate, and it started to leak before it exploded.

It was unknown why Pierce was in jail to begin with.

He pleaded not guilty to the mischief charges and is being held in jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.

A new building's sprinkler system and a quick response by Chilliwack firefighters helped prevent a downtown apartment fire from causing serious damage.

At approximately 1:30 p.m.. on July 2, crews from Halls 1 and 4 responded to the fire in the 9000 block of Corbould Street.

On arrival crews reported light smoke from a third storey apartment window of a four-storey apartment.

The fire was quickly brought under control with the aid of the building's sprinkler system, according to the Chilliwack Fire Department.

The tenant of the unit where the fire started was home and the sprinkler helped limit the tenant's exposure to smoke and hazardous gases.

There were no firefighter or civilian injuries, and damage was limited to the one unit.

The cause of the fire appears to be related to smoking materials.

SEASPAR brings special recreation programs to Lisle rec center

    - July 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

When SEASPAR Executive Director Susan Friend looks at the area and out the windows of the new dedicated space the special recreation organization has at the Lisle Park District Recreation Center, she throws her arms out wide and smiles. "Wow," she says as much for herself as for others to hear.

"We needed more space to continue to meet the communities' needs, and Lisle stepped up," Friend said.

Within the 2,000-square-foot space, the South East Association for Special Parks and Recreation has a great multipurpose room and its first multisensory room.

Large windows open to views of Lisle Community Park. With the space having its own entrance and adjacent parking, it is easy to see why Friend is thrilled with the opportunities the facility offers SEASPAR and its ongoing service to individuals with special needs.

"We are truly excited about this facility," Friend said.

SEASPAR's mission statement is to "enable participants to discover abilities, achieve potential and realize dreams."

The first thing checked off SEASPAR's wish list to help with that mission was the installation of a multisensory room it calls Wonders.

"We had a dream of creating a sensory room for folks with autism (and) other sensory integration problems and (it) is proving to be effective for people with dementia," Friend said.

The SEASPAR staff researched many features before undertaking the project for Wonders. Generous donations were set aside waiting for the creation of the unique multisensory room.

Now a reality, the room may be tailored to different opportunities. Muted white walls allow fiber optical tubes to add bubbles of color. Projected on the floor, a high-tech image of a pool ripples when a child dips their toe into the scene, or leaves wave when a hand passes through the almost-magical illusion.

Huge Unemployment Drop in New Bedford; Economy Bouncing Back

    - July 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

There are signs the New Bedford economy is turning around.

One outside a restaurant under construction says, "Opening Soon".

Another outside a clothing plant says, Now Hiring.

That's because suit manufacturing inside, is booming.

"Our men's clothing business has really taken off over the past 12 months. We have 200 new hires in the last year of employees, and we're looking for help today. We probably need another 50 people, said Tony Sapienza, CEO of Joseph Abboud Clothing, and Chairman of the New Bedford Economic Development Commission.

Just down the road, construction continues at "The Black Whale" restaurant, which opens Thursday.

The owner believes a waterfront location, with seafood, is a perfect match in New Bedford.

"The City itself has changed. It's very pedestrian friendly. It's very tourist friendly. You know we want you to come down to see the character, walk around here and I think you'll enjoy the fishing boats you'll enjoy the food, and you'll enjoy just the character of the city," said Al Santos who owns The Black Whale and Hygrade Ocean Products in New Bedford.

Les Nomades chef part of French brasserie slated for Hyatt in Loop

    - July 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A brasserie called Cochon Volant is slated for the Hyatt hotel planned at 100 W. Monroe St. Photo from CoStar Group Inc.

Acclaimed Chicago chef Roland Liccioni and the restaurant unit of a fast-growing foodservice company are teaming up on a French spot in a forthcoming downtown hotel.

WellDone Hospitality Inc., part of Chicago-based OrganicLife LLC, signed a lease to open a brasserie called Cochon Volant French for flying pig in a 6,000-square-foot space in the 257-room Hyatt hotel under construction in the vintage office building at 100 W. Monroe St., said OrganicLife CEO Jonas Falk.

Mr. Liccioni, who built a name for himself at Le Franais in Wheeling and now runs Les Nomades in Streeterville, will oversee the kitchen, Mr. Falk said.

The restaurant will open in a corner space at Monroe and Clark streets, he said, offering all-day breakfast with French specialties like croissants and, in the evening, Mr. Liccioni's interpretation of dinner classics like steak frites. There will be about 180 seats, plus an outdoor seating area.

The Loop has been rapidly transforming in recent years with new apartment towers and hotel projects. The development boom has spurred a spate of new restaurants, including Chicago-based DineAmic Group's planned steakhouse at LaSalle Street and Wacker Drive and additional dining options in Block 37.

Yet pulling off a restaurant in a downtown hotel isn't easy, since guests often prefer to eat at places different than where they're staying. And the Loop still sees traffic in the area dip when office workers head home.

    'TREMENDOUS AMOUNTS OF CHALLENGES'

At a lot of hotels in the area, restaurants have had tremendous amounts of challenges, and the Loop, on nights and weekends, is very, very quiet, said Chuck Hamburg, principal at Chicago-based consultancy Creative Hospitality Associates and a professor of restaurant management at Roosevelt University. They're going to have to market it as a restaurant that happens to be located in a hotel.

Having Mr. Licconi on board, however, is a huge asset for the restaurant and should help Mr. Falk and OrganicLife President Justin Rolls attract locals, said Mr. Hamburg, who once employed Mr. Rolls.
